More Player Lookalikes

Jude, sorry if I offended anyone. I have no desire to promote the nazis. The resemblence (to Ralf) was just too uncanny to ignore.

Maybe I went too far with Himmler, but as far as Thorston and Jennifer, COME ON, lighten up, it's a joke!

Tim, your apology is accepted.

I never said there was a joke about Jews. I said it was insensitive to Jews and no, I'm not going to chill-out. If you do not understand why I find it offensive, back off!

Actually, I think it was offensive to Ralf Souquet. He didn't show any support for Himmler or the nazi party, so I don't see why you would find it offensive. There are pictures of these nazi bastards everywhere. Does it make you angry when you read a history book??? I don't get it.

I'll tell you what. A good friend of mine, who is an Israeli Jew, lost his father in the Holocaust. I'll ask him if posting a picture of Himmler or another nazi as a comparison in a lookalike contest is offensive to him. I'll tell you his answer tomorrow.

For a moment, try to imagine what goes through my mind when I see a thread about lookalikes and the first thing I see is the leader of the Gestapo. And, unfortunately, this would not be the first time something insensitive to Jews has been posted on this board. It's alarming, especially when I visit here in the hopes that we might actually have something to say about pool.

I haven't even gotten into the fact that he compared Jennifer Barretta to a man (which is also not funny). I know her quite well and if there's one thing I can honestly say about her, there is NOTHING masculine about her appearance. Also knowing her, she'd probably laugh it off but I know a lot of women who'd be in tears by such a suggestion.

In regards to the Jewish thing, I see your point, but I think you're being a little too harsh on everybody. There is a world of difference between just not thinking before posting something and being mean spirited.

In regards to the Jennifer Baretta thing, my first reaction was how feminine Fabio looks, not that Jennifer looked masculine. I think you totally missed the point of that comparision.

My best friend's father is a Holocaust survivor from Poland, and his whole family was murdered by the Nazis. I know how sensitive she is to some topics, and I do think she would be offended by the mere mention of anything pertaining to the Nazis. However, I do not believe that the poster intended for his picture to be offensive to anyone. JMHO, FWIW.

I don't know why, but Ralf Souquet always reminded me of Jiminy Cricket from Disney. For the young'ns who don't know who Jiminy Cricket is, he was the smart cricket who gave advice to Pinocchio. :p

Oddly enough, I see the resemblance, and the comparision is much more benign.

Who has a copy of the picture with Ralph and Dana Carvey, now that was an uncanny resemblance.

As far as Jude is concerned, I highly respect him as a person and a player. In my personal opinion, I think he's overreacting but it's none of my business so I'll stay out of it. If I had posted the picture and it offended Jude, I would pull the picture, delete the post, and apologize to Jude.

Its really sad that this thread was started in a fun and humorous manner and has been turned into a facist debate! Some people do need to lighten up and laugh once in a while....your lives would be alot less miserable to you if you did! I mean if I had put up a picture of David Howard and Mr. Ed, would I have animal rights activists criticizing me???? No one ever said that Ralf was a Nazi or supported nazis.....it is a look a like thread and he just looks like the guy....THATS ALL!!!!!!

Just recently in New York City, a high school student decided it would be a fun idea to dress as Adolf Hitler on Halloween. He even grew the mustache for the part. Knowing he would have a difficult time walking in public, he disguised his attire by dressing as Charlie Chaplan only changing when he finally reached school.

He was pulled from class immediately because quite a few people found it in horribly bad taste. The reason given was that he was making light of a matter many people consider to be the worst chapter in world history. Was he an anti-semite? I don't know but his actions were definitely anit-semitic. Regardless as to his motives (though they are important), there were people who did not like the idea of someone marching through their school in Nazi attire, even if it were Halloween.

This board is about pool and I understand sometimes we talk about more than just that but there are certain things I simply don't want to see or read. I don't want Nazism taken lightly, in "good humor" or for the sake of a look-alike contest. If this were a 9/11 joke, would anyone argue with me? I'm even more astounded that people would need to even question whether it's appropriate.

Seriously, if this is the way Judaism is to be treated on azbilliards.com, I doubt I'll post here again.

Ummmm, I hope you asked Santa for a sense of humor this year.

Stevie looks a little like Scott Baio also. I think he looked more like him in "Charles in Charge" and it was more evident 5-6 years ago. Another uncanny look-a-like is David Broxson and NBA player Keith Van Horn. They look so much alike its scary.

i agree with Jude completely. There is no place for this kind of "humor" on a public forum.

For me, this is the second post inside a month that I have found to be in extremely poor taste.

The motives behind the orignal post aren't as important to me as the lack of sensitivity that accompanied it. The exact text is even less important, and isn't any less offensive becasue certain words or parralles werent made.

What irks me even more, though, is that after Jude's comments were made, posting continued in support of the notion that this was in some way humorous and that Jude lacked any understanding of the notion.

Ralf is in Germany right now or I would ask him, but I did ask Thorsten what he thought of this thread. His reply was that it is PATHETIC. He went on to say that right before he 'joined" az, he was warned by other players to stay away from here at all costs. There is no mystery why after only a small handful of posts, he has stopped contributing here all together.

Jude,

I'm a Jew, and like yours, the European branch of my ancenstry and all records thereof were wiped out the Holocaust. But I was not offended by this thread.

As you say, "if this were a 9/11 joke", it would be a picture of a man who resembled Usama bin Laden next to a picture of bin Laden. Would you be offended simply because a picture of bin Laden was posted here? There are pictures of him all over the news. A picture of someone who committed atrocities is not in itself a statement about those atrocities. Honestly, speaking as a Jew, I think the only person who should legitimately be offended by this is Ralf Souquet.

I think it's important for me to speak up here, because I don't think someone should be accused of anti-semitism lightly. There have been anti-semitic things said on this board, particularly one thread which I won't link or name because the poster involved was sincerely sorry about the comment he made, and I jumped in to put a stop to what was being said. I'm all about fighting anti-semitism by all means, and trying to get people to understand the kind of statements which foster an anti-semitic cultural climate which could allow atrocities like the Holocaust and the pogroms of Stalin's USSR to occur. But if we want people to take cultrual anti-semitism seriously, we can't "cry wolf" over things like this thread.

I hope you'll reconsider your condemnation of this board as being hostile toward Judaism. I don't feel that it is.

HOLY COW, I didn't want to start a forum riot!

I've apologized to Jude and he accepted it. I also hearby give an official apology to Ralf and have removed the photos in question.

I've met all 3 players and they're all good, decent people. But if you're a celebrity (of sorts) I believe you're fair game when it comes to jokes.

It seems like most people here at AZ are standing up for me (even the Jewish ones) and I thank you for that.
