the perception that santa is a symbol of christianity doesn't necessarily mean that all or even most (although i believe most do) christians associate the two. Equally as important is what all other beliefs perceive santa to be.

Walk up to ANY PERSON in the world and show them a picture of santa. Ask them who it is, and what it represents. EVERYONE will say christmas. NOw what is christmas, the birth of christ?

Try wrapping your brain around that for a minute.

rg

People's perceptions may be wrong, and they should be open to that possibility. It is called growing. Are rabbits offensive to some because there is a secular character "the Easter bunny" associated with Easter? There is a secular part of Christmas (as evidenced by the popularity of people endorsing X-MAS, removing nativity scenes but not santa) and a secular part of Easter, and they have little to do with the religious part.

IMHO I think their is more of a resemblence to Max here.

(disclaimer!! Scottster is NOT proclaiming that Max Eberle likes to eat taters and whack people in the head with lawnmower blades).

LMAO, that's hilarious.

I've played Max many times, and I can tell you that's the look he gives when you break in the 9 hill-hill against hiim.

What a sad day it is on this forum. Because of one poster's MISINTERPRETATION of another poster's picture, there have been lines drawn in the sand based on religion. Santa is the bad guy, and anyone who mentions his name is anti-Jewish.

I am disgusted by this, thoroughly disgusted, more so than the original poster's disgust at seeing a photo used for a look-alike fun thread. The ensuing debate because of one man's MISINTERPRETATION is very sickening.

i have posted my feelings about what has happened here, in non-pool as most of this has gone off the table.

That's like saying egg nog or reindeer or jingle bells are symbols of Christianity.

I have to side with Kelly Guy on this one NYC cue dude. Santa Claus is a secular symbol for the secular christmas (with a small c). Ask any orthodox Christian what they think of the notion of Santa Claus and my guess is they'll say he's a distraction to the true meaning of Christmas (with a big C).

My point is Santa Claus should not be associated with Christianity the religion. If some do, then it is ignorance.

I'm not leaving out the possibility that corvette said his "Santa Claus" remark with anti-Semitic tones...but I highly doubt it.

i disagree.

The thought of one of the most definitve christian symbols (outside of the cross), santa, delivering an attitude adjustment to a jew, suggesting that the jew should "lighten up" and should have a sense of humor regarding a nazi complicit in the murder of millions of people IS DEFINTELY anti-semetic. There is no amount of explanations or rationalizations that will ever make me think differently either.

A few weeks ago, in a thread about "best deals ever on a cue", someone wrote that during the process of getting a really good price on a cue, the poster, already satisfied on the price, figured "he wouldn't attempt to jew him down anymore"

I was appalled, and called for a public apology. Not only didn't it happen, but other posters continued contributing to the thread (not unlike this situation) without mentioning the hateful use of speech.

And that is how I feel now. I am really disgusted as well.

The people who knew about the holocaust, and stood by and did nothing to help, share, imo (and many historical scholars, both jewish and gentile), some guilt in contributing to the atrocities. Again, very much like this situation.

I know Jude, but have not spoken with him about this, but i'd venture a guess that this too has contributed to his reaction.

rg

The poster in the other thread you mentioned should be called out to either apologize for his egregiously bigoted remark, or be banned. I didn't read that other thread, but if Jude did, I can see how that would have put him on edge, and caused him to over-react to the non-bigoted posting of a picture of Himmler.

But surely you see the difference between that comment, which is unquestionably derogatory toward the Jewish people, and this thread, which makes no statement whatsoever about the Jewish people? If we're going to have a big discussion about anti-semitism, let's have it about anti-semitism, and not about a harmless photograph!

Call out the poster in the other thread, Randy, call him out so Mr. Wilson can hear. He owes you and anyone else who saw that thread an apology, and if he won't give it, he doesn't belong here. You could win a relevant battle against bigotry, instead of a ludicrous over-reaction to a look-alike thread which is no more anti-semitic than a Mel Brooks movie.

Hear, hear. Very well stated.

I definitely did not use my now infamous "Santa" remark with anti-Semitic tones. Although that would garner outstanding 3rd level humor points. I have apologized to Jude or anyone else I offended. Like I said, this thread was started with the intentions of humorous pool player look alikes and its amazing that some people on here have misconstrued it so much. So, with that being said, I hope that anyone believing in Santa Claus gets a sense of humor in their stocking. For anyone that doesn't believe in Santa Claus, I hope your fake holiday figurehead character representative brings you lots of humor and holiday cheer.

'Vette -man,
I certainly took it as such, and surely most of the forum did as well. I see absolutely no relationship between your post and any political statement on Ralf, Nazi's, the Holocaust, Judaism, or Republicans (and yes, I read the whole thread - I just don't see any logical relationship - I could be wrong, or so my wife has often told me). I thought it was funny.

Actually, the fat and jolly Santa as we see him today, was created by Haddon Sundblom at Coca-Cola in the early 1930s to sell their product.

I take offense to Marissa's use of the words fat and jolly.
We prefer to be known as "happy people of exceptional proportion."

Willie,
I didn't even start the thread. I only made the comment that some people should view it for what it really is, humor. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good holiday season.
