please excuse the caps.however i felt a need to shout.i think the next mosconi captain should be grady.i don't even have to put his last name.we all know if anyone is qualified to be captain it would be grady.look he only has a short time with us.as he has stated.what better thing for pool to do than elect grady captain.besides he could use the cash.those other people who have been talked about still have time on there side.grady does not.in fact i'm all for makeing him captain as long as he wants it and his health allows him to do it.i'm wondering if any one else feels the same.lets hear what you have to say. george

what happened to the caps?

I think that's an awesome idea...he definitely knows the game as well as anyone, can communicate it well, and has the respect of virtually everyone.

I think it's a very sweet idea however considering his health, do you think he would have the energy for it? Only Grady can answer that I guess.

I do agree that the captain should be a veteran. Hopkins or Davenport would be my favorites.

Get a name coach that if known for ralleying the troops. As far coaching them on the game, they're ot going to listen to anyone. Johnnyt

I like Grady, and his style of speaking is elegant. He would make a great captain IMO....so would Allan Hopkins.....but you know, Grady would be a cool pick because the man has not always been given the respect he is due in our pool world, and I bet he would be tickled pink to captain the team!

there are other people who could be named, however i don't think anyone would be more tickled than grady.would make his remaining years all the more meaningful.imo

seeing grady on the front of asb with a.fisher and reading what was said, makes him all the more the man for the job.imo

The issue is there really are no coaches on US soil... Sure you have a lot of guys trying to make a living as instructors but not many come to mind that I would consider worthy of coaching the Mosconi team....

Now as far as picking the match ups and getting the best bang for our team buck I would have to say I want Billy Incardona.......

I didn't think the Captains pick the match-ups. I thought the way it is done is each Captain submits their line-ups from first to last and however they match up is how it goes. Is this not right?

Mosconi Captain

I feel that to be a Mosconi Cup Captain you would have to have earned it and no politics or even the players to decide.

Qualifications should be at least 2 out of 3 of the following

World Champion

Hall of Fame Member

U.S. open winner

we need some fire!

wouldn't earl make a great captain! or at least a great pirate!

2nd to none in enthusiasm and fire. he's been there, done that, and knows how to win.

I dunno Pro....great coaches are motivators, baby sitter, psychologists, friend, mentor.....but I don't think it's a must to be world champ. I do think you would need to know what it's like to be in VERY high pressure situations though. Just a thought....

i've read the replys, all good.however, at this time in his life grady is the man for captain and you all know it.if you could ask all the people who have been mentioned who they think should get it at this time, they would say with one voice-------GRADY

What odds can I get if I pick Charlie Williams as captain? Not that i'm in favor of him. It is my hunch it's a done deal already. Johnnyt

My Credentials Would be Some Combination of the Following:

At least one major title
Participation in at least one Mosconi Cup
Qualifications as an instructor
A track record of dignity and sportsmanship
A track record of service to the game

I'll restirct my consideration of this topic those that have yet to captain an American Mosconi Cup team. I feel that the American captain should be a grand old man of the game, and, as Europe has demonstrated, instructors are worthy of consideration. My preference would be for someone who has contributed to the sport on multiple levels. Grady would certainly be a solid choice.

In the instructor category, a great choice would be Mark Wilson, one of the world's best instructors, a man of impeccable dignity and grace, and a man who competed in the Mosconi Cup as a player in the 1990's. Mark has frequently demonstrated his scholarship of the game as a commentator for pro events.

In the player category, a really solid choice for captain would be Tony Robles, the former BCA Open champion who has distinguished himself as a player and has been a member of a winning Mosconi Cup team. Tony is also very accomplished as an instructor. Best of all, though, Tony, in a vote conducted by his fellow pros, was named Sportsman of the Year on the PBT twice. He's got the knowledge, the dignity, and the respect of his peers that would make him a great choice. Tony is also a founder of the Predator Tour and the amateur league called the NAPL.
