Mosconi Cup 2012 Day 2 Discussion

Clarify break rule

How many balls must be in the kitchen after break stops rolling?

Is it three? Pocketed balls count toward the three?

So, you don't count balls that travel into, but back out of the kitchen?

Probably the cut break, but balls seem to labor in getting back to the breaking end of the table.

At least violations are not ball-in-hand. Do they have the option to give the shot back for push/shot to the breaker?

Archer has been solid. No lint picking. Enjoyable to watch his veteran leadership.

The way I heard them announce it is that a total of three balls have to either come back to touch any part of the headstring or be pocketed.

Any combo of either making it back to the headstring or going into a pocket, as long as it adds up to three balls, makes for a legal break.

I think you are correct, Brian. The way the rules on the Cup website read is "...three balls must pass the headstring. This does not include the cue ball. Pocketed balls count ..."

It looked to me like the way Michaela Tabb was administering it was to count any ball that would touch or break the vertical plane rising from the head string. In other words, the ball did not have to completely pass the head string, nor did its center have to reach or pass the head string -- just the leading edge.

"Johnny has to go all the way round the table to get on this 9"
lol #Clueless

I'm pretty sure he gets more calls right than wrong, in all the matches i watched with Wych and Helfert commentating i think the phrase i heard most was Jay saying "well you were right Jim".

Yes. Hatch was dry 3 out of 4 breaks; Melling was successful 3 out of 4.

From different sides of the table. Right? From what I saw todaybefore I had to run to do a favor, it seemed the right side was breaking better than the left side. If so you have to give it a try fairly quickly in a short race.

Regards,

They did get some rolls, but good play usually does. I watched the last two matches and the big difference in the Hatch match was the break. I think Dennis made 1 ball on the break and that will make anyone play bad. If you watch a recording, watch Johnny pump Shane up when Europe tied it up hill hill. You could tell Johnny knew they were the big favorite breaking. Johnny might be the best pressure player ever!

Johnny played Shane down in New Iberia, LA not long ago and was down something awful, I mean awful. I won't even attempt to remember how far down he was but he had no chance. Somehow Johnny bared down, I mean, really bared down and wound up hill-hill. Shane finally took the match down but Johnny is a serious if not the best pressure player ever. I LOVE HIS FOCUS WHEN HE IS IN THE CHAIR WAITING TO SHOOT.

USA is very lucky to be level at 5:5. Europe have won far more racks, but as usual, statistics are only that, statistics. Europe are better shot makers on average, that one is obvious. In fact, I think only Shane and Archer would be able to make it on a European team (if they were European and played on Euro tours)...IMO of course, no disrespect.

archer plays so solid, its unbelievable.

you barely see any shotmaking mistakes, safeties and the break make the difference.

really great pool, im looking forward to this evening for the next matches.

best comment so far (from the commentators @nikos E.): "He looks like the guy who collects your debts"

i nearly pissed myself :embarrassed2:

IT's great for the game to have it all square after 2 days

both teams always have chances in most matches, it's who makes less mistakes

Compared to Darts and Snooker, 9ball pool has a sizeable luck element
