Mosconi Cup 2012

With all the Mosconi Cup talk lately and after one event it looks as if we have a good chance to have the same team next year. SVB wins the first event, which solidifies him as a virtual lock but no top six finish from Earl, Archer and Hatch is not a good start IMO. Did the great Corey Deuel even show up? Also why is the Derby not a points event? Its not like we have so many events in the US to choose from. I think it was Mark Griffin who said as of now there is only five events, Turning Stone twice, us open nine ball, us open ten ball, and the super billiard expo. Why no derby points?

I hope the US team consists of SVB, Earl, Dennis, Johnny plus the top finisher not listed. But with five events Earl, Dennis and Johnny are not guarenteed to make it leaving a team of something like SVB, Morris, Dechaine, Putnam and Shuff or Oscar. Unfortunalely for the US that is not good enough.

Any body know if Corey Deuel played?
Why no Derby points?
What team do you want to see next year?
Thoughts?

Ill start with my team:
Shane Van Boening
Dennis Hatch
Johnny Archer
Earl Strickland
Mike Dechaine
Captain- Allen Hopkins or Joe Rogan or Dippy Dave?

Any way Dippy or Joe can pull some strings to get the Mosconi Cup on US tv live??

I still would like to see Alex on the team.

They have their whole continent to choose from, right ?

Fair enough with the buybacks, but dont all the potential Mosconi Cup players use all the buybacks they have available? By looking at list of former nine ball champions at the derby, it is impressive no matter the format.

I suggest that Richard Simmons should be considerd as the captain. Richard is a good motivator, uniter, nonthreatening and can electrify the spectators.

I'm a fan of Earl, but I think he is too unstable to be part of MC. If somebody can convince Corey Deuel to focus on pool again, he should be part of the team.

Mosconi Cup.

To me the U.S team hasn't got the same kind of team spirit as Europe last few years.TV dictates too much and I was shocked at the TV coverage times.I thought as it was played in Las Vegas the games would start Midnight our time but it was 7pm.Advantage Europe.

Seems silly

to be discussing this now. Wait till next November when it starts to be relevant again.

Ralph Greenleaf Cup

Dickering with the rules of the break is a disaster for the US. Moving the location of the front ball, and requiring balls to cross the head string. These were anti Cory Duel rules.

I read another article in the December Billiard Digest by Bob Jewett. I admire Bob and his dedication to the game.

I mark in all my books and magazines. A bad habit. No offense Bob. In the margin I wrote BS Euro type rules.

US Open 9 Ball in Chesapeake Va.
1 All matches were rack your own.
2 The 1 ball needed to be on the spot with the 2 in the back of the rack.
3 The cue ball had to be in the box
4 The 9 ball didn't count and was spotted if it went in a foot pocket.
5 At least three object balls had to pass the side pockets or go in, or the seated payer then decided who would shoot next.

The three ball rule was to prevent soft breaks. An Anti Duel and now others rule. No mention of alternate, winner, or loser breaks. Further rules on how to qualify. I say let the captain pick.

I guess the strategy is to flavor the rule changes into our advantage. I do not know what the ratios of those voting on the rules, but with the mess we are in, it looks like we are outnumbered.

Often an opponent will place the 2 at the back. I like returning the front ball to the spot. The others seem to be Euro compromises.

Joe Thomas tells me that in the old days one could push out at any time. That put a premium on the push out and increased the chess aspect of the game. Perhaps that is too much for ESPN.

I see little value in a 3 to 5 minute game.

The action seems to be in controlling the rules of the game. I say start a Ralph Greenleaf Cup and and fix the rules to customary US rules. That is keep the Euro guys out of our rule making.

This is great USA team.

Shane Van Boening
Dennis Hatch
Johnny Archer
Earl Strickland (he is nuts, but can still jam)
Corey Deul

Mike Dechaine and Shawn Putnam both earned the right to play on the team and performed well.

In a big money match would you put up money for Shawn or Mike to play the above 5.

Corey seems to fet forgot about, but he is a beast. Ask Mika, how he liked playing in the finals if the open. In 2010, Corey reached 13 first playing Apppleton, if it was not win by two,, Corey was your champ.

Everyone has different people they like, these are the guys I think gives USA the best chance.

The matches also started in the afternoon when played in London last year. And regardless of that, both teams started play this year at the same time of day, so there was no advantage.

Danny, I was going to pick the same as you.

That would be a wonderful team. I would love to see Alex P get a chance to play too. Maybe that can happen in the near future. Stranger things have happened.

Richard Simmons? He definitely has the energy. Maybe thats what the boys need. Some good ole fashioned bum slaps.
