Mosconi Cup 2021 Day 2 Updates

At 4 to 1 after the break the cueball was wide open.

The 1 9 and 2 were down table in a cluster.

All he had to do was thin the 1 , leaving it there and run cueball 2 rails up table to long rail, short rail and under the 8

If he missed the cueball safe, the 1 is still tied up and he's got distance.

Rule #1 Don't Sell Out.
Even worse Don't Scratch.
You know sometimes we come to the table and see something and then we blank out all other possibilities, and just focus on that one thing. Jeremy probably should have taken more time to study the situation, and I think he still had an extension.

Yeah
What he did was some kind of next level one pocket nonsense....wrong game

OK, I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to the 1-ball shot JJ played in the 4-3 game, leaving Chris a relatively tough cut on the 2 which he made, but didn’t leave JJ an ideal angle for the 3 for shape on the 5.

Ha Ha, next level One Pocket. I love it! Good commentary there.
He said it was a timing shot and the 2 and cueball were going to come back together...

Gotta build distance in if you aren't getting lock safe. Race to 5 selling out or scratching are death.

Much as I hate it...race to 5, alternating break brings up alot of drama.

One of my favorite gambling sessions involved short races. Race to 2 for $40 on a barbox giving the called 8. Played for about 4 hours. Instant pressure. After game 1 you are either on the hill or need 2. Was alot of fun.

I got stuck in a game like that (on a 9'), also giving up the eight to a weaker player. I kept doubling the bet from $10 to $20 and so on. After he got me stuck for over $600 I pulled up. I was dead in the water by that time and couldn't get out with BIH.

I thought JJ had the right idea, he just hit it a smidgen too hard. If he thins it off the right side of the 1 ball, there’s no way he hooks them behind the 8 ball, and it’s quite possible the 1 ball slides to the left enough for them to either have a shot on it, or at least in a strong position to execute a good safety.

If he really felt unsure with the safe, he could have always called push out and tapped the cue ball forward an inch or two and given the Euros the option to play the shot.

This ball was not on the rail at all.

A couple points from today's matches. Team USA has heart! They are certainly taking chances when it would be better to duck but it shows spunk and I admire that! Win or lose may come down to playing a little more like the Euro's did today. They did not take as many risks and it did pay off to some degree.

The other thing I thought was WHAT IF Earl was playing?? What if he was focused and out for blood like I was hoping he'd be.. Damned too bad he is not in this.... JMO!

You hit 1 real thin, leave it tied up....no worries. This table is lightning fast.

He was close enough to the rail that he had to hit very top of cueball with a level cue.

That's the kind of shot if you hit it slow the high English on the cueball causes the object ball to skid straight a little. Especially on new, slick cloth You have to almost overcut it a little in order to make it. Those are pretty tight pockets too.

JJ had a tough position play from the 3 to that 4. Hit it good, it just ended up a being a tough leave.

That is a funny shot. Things can go wrong
He had lots of room to hit below the top of the CB, If you watch the overhead replay on the video you can see he hit the left side of the CB and he is also shooting down on the ball not a level cue.

He's down good on that ball. I thought he was going to make it.
Yup but I think he was off center to the left on the CB when he got down on the shot and shooting down he pushed the CB right.
Illustrates the importance of being able to get a good center ball strike for this type of shot, it was a pressure ball and sometimes it's good to get back up and realign.

If this were to somehow come down to a deciding match. I really hope they put up Sky or Tyler
Without question for the last few years Sky is the best American player on the team in this tournament. The question is whether Jeremy sees it, and if he does, if he would have the guts to actually put Sky in instead of Shane knowing Shane would almost certainly feel real slighted about that. I'm guessing Shane would not play future Mosconi Cups if it happened so overall it might not be the smartest long term choice anyway.
