MOSCONI CUP 2023 AZB Watch Party / Master Thread

Was really rooting for Wolford to get that win, he will hopefully be a great asset in future MCs based on how he played here, strong showing for a rookie
The problem isn't that he's a rookie it's that he's a 2-1 dog to the worst player on team Europe according to fargo rate.

He played exactly like you would expect. Just not a world beater.

The real problem is that Team USA cannot replace him with a stronger player and he's probably not going to turn into a low 800 fargo any time soon or probably ever. Same with Styer.

Europe could have fielded 4 more teams that would have dominated USA in similar fashion

But they are the best we have which is the problem. With no solution in sight.

If you want to be the best, you have to play the best! Go wherever you have to go. Do whatever you have to do. It won't happen by staying home and playing the same guys, plus the Filipinos who dominate tournaments here.

11-3 is the story here. Excuses are like a-holes. Everybody has one!
True, but in the mean time it is a financial loser for most American players to go overseas to play- most won't even travel domestically for the same reason (Dechaine, Bergman).

Yes, they will get better, but they won't cover expenses for a while because most aren't good enough to go deep in international tournaments

Mosconi feels like a reason to give money to male players when qualified women are ready and more consistent.

After yet another beatdown I can't help but wonder...

1). How much longer is Matchroom planning on sticking with this very lopsided event? I kind of hope they move away from it sooner than later. I don't see it becoming more competitive in light of the huge contrast in youth pool development in Europe v USA. That is not a knock on USA; pool is a hobby and social pursuit here. There is no "career" path, if you will, and given the meager prize money involved nor should there be.

2) What was different, behind the scenes, about the Johan captaincy when with USA? I get the impression there was a much different approach in play though maybe not. I do remember the team, with Johan, participated in tune up matches in Russia and England when he was captain which I think may have really helped (may have been cost prohibitive to continue with those in subsequent years I guess).

Here's one of the big problems with pursuing professional pool that I haven't seen mentioned by anyone other than me, so maybe I'm wrong...

If you want to rise up through the ranks playing pool in say China who do you have to compete against? The Chinese. How about in the Philippines? The Filipinos. In Europe -- same deal. You see where I'm going with this. I know it's not an absolute deal but it's not like it is here.

You want to do this in the US, who do you compete against? The answer -- the world.

Even a regional barbox tourney will have highly rated international players in it.

This greatly contributes to the inevitable sense of futility up and coming US players experience. I think US players are actually smarter than players of previous generations, as many of them are forced to make lifelong decisions much sooner. Most don't choose pool and who can blame them?

How many women are 800 Fargorated?

Thats another man based metric. Start using measures that are woman dominant.

Popular measures of success for women are how many have not broken a cue stick at a tournament?

How many women have actually maintained a decent lifestyle and not fallen apart due to poor life choices?

How many pro women support the industry or another player?

Most of the pro men are always looking for freebies.

Why do the women grow the sport in more countries than men?

I think it'd be cool if maybe every other year, each team had to field 1 female player.

I'd push for a Junior too.

What is the point in having 5 world champions on one team against 1 HF and 4 hopefuls.

That is like a college athlete (ages more than 18) doing an exhibition against an entire Junior High school (ages less than 13).

Most Americans achieve peak physical build around 18 to 25.

Would the narrative be different if America won with the newly made American Fedor?

Pool pros got together and played for the week at Barry's HQ. Sounds like Mortal Kombat and blowouts are very common in sports.

Who wants to do that again but under Heyball flag and the women will get equal pay and equal coverage?

Now is the time for men to support women for equal pay. Let's see it men.

Sounds like a Catch-22

Why does everyone want to brutalize the USA? If it wasn't for our global financial generosity and military protection a large number of you folks would be living in mud shacks eating worms. Just kidding.... But what's not a joke is many of you love to see Americans fail. I think it's possibly rooted in jealousy, maybe even hatred.

Some stats on the 2023 Mosconi Cup are now available in these two threads:

Don’t let players jumpi the ball and Americans will get better. It should actually illegal. Learn the Diamond system. I notice a lot of local players don’t even know what that is.

This is one thing I notice and it happened twice where Gorst missed a kick and SVB brought out the jump cue when I thought both could have easily kicked.

Now there are only two incidents but two incidents on this level can change the outcome of a match.

I’ve seen too many jump cue owners in recent years than anytime playing. It use to be that one guy who brings out his jump cue and it was an anomaly and he only had one just to have one. Now I see guys holding up games to use them when an easy kick would do.

The point I’m making is they are pattern players. When out of pattern they are fucked and unsure what to do.
