Mosconi cup and EARL

The Europeans do not seem as friendly and welcoming to other nationalities as the Filipinos do, IMHO. In fact -- well, I better just leave it at that. :embarrassed2:

Well, without making a big thing about this, you are judging a whole part of the world based on one event - The Mosconi cup.

The world is a pretty big place and it's full of cultural differences which we as humans have to adapt to - thats cultural understanding.

I'm from Norway, we are not the same as the Swedish,Danes, Germans,English and so on. And then our country is so small in population that I guess we could be a small corner of LA or some of the other major cities in you're end. Even if we are a small country - I understand that not all Americans are as Earl and in not any way generalizing the whole of US in respect of weigh, cars or what ever.

I do think that you should do the same and not generalize, no offense or disrespect with respect to you or any others:sorry:

I have been traveling a lot and I know that there is big differences between our European neighbors, and I'm sure our neighbors have some special meanings of us Norwegians as well, but that's the different " flavors of the world"

Anyway, may the best team win and looking forward to the matches.

i agree 100%

I would much rather watch Earl Strickland play pool than a robot. :)

Marcus Chamat and Sandor Tot are two Europeans who have a great personality on and off the field of green, at least that is my experience with seeing both of them.

It is amazing to see how everyone seems to whine and moan about Earl Strickland. They should catch Mika's act when he's losing sometime.:shocked2:

Now, show me somebody who likes to lose, and I'll show you a loser.:grin-square:

The point being that Earl ain't the only sour grape in the Mosconi pool fruitcake. As Ronnie Wiseman would say, everything's funny when you're winning that big money, but I've seen some European players display some untoward gestures on more than one occasion.

The airhorns, whistling and screaming is actually something I love about the audience here. I feel like I'm at a pro basketball game or something and that type of enthusiasm is definitely missing in U.S. pool. This is 3-4 hours of live prime time TV here in Europe every night...and we all know how far the U.S. is from EVER having that happen in America. I know the players don't mind the rowdy crowd...it's the disrespectful things that are said and done while players are at the table that I don't agree with. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not at all making generalizations about European fans...I am only speaking of a few case incidents. Many of the European fans were very supportive of Shane and other players when they ran out of the rack they were in when a fan did an offensive and disturbing thing during their shots. And as much as they like to heckle him...most of the European fans actually seem to love him.

Thanks for your posts. It's nice to read from somebody who is there, and I appreciate you stating the clarification of your impression at the event.

I especially enjoyed your last sentence. Say it one more time, so the masses of this forum can read it again and again and again and again. :D

just for better understanding: i only agree with you in this point:

I totally agree that Earl acts up often and we all know that's why they invite him to this event, but seeing this event in person for the first time, I'm amazed by how disrespectful some of the fans have been. When you saw Earl's demeanor change in that match it was because a profain comment came from the European players area, not just a regular fan.

If anyone watched Shane's first singles match yesterday you saw him make some out of character comments to the crowd as well because they were flashing cameras right as he stroked thru a shot, and the referee made no comment to the crowd to stop or rest his clock. I was sitting near some other European fans and even they kept appologizing for how their other fans were acting towards our team.

The U.S. team is understandably frustrated here. Earl is of course acting like Earl, but for the first time I've ever seen, I actually don't blame him too much when he goes off...the things he says may be a little over the top, but he's not going crazy for now reason...there's a lot you don't see when you see it on TV.

You are SO right....what goes on off camera is amazing.

They ride him like a horse....constant bantering, insults, even talking about his family.

Last yr I was standing next to him right after his match when a European walked up and started telling him "I idolized you since i was a kid....blah, blah, blah" and when Earl went to shake his hand, the guy pulled his back, and said "not really, you piece of shit"...and turned around and walked away. Earl went off, as you can imagine....rightfully so. It's on YouTube somewhere.

We couldn't walk thru the MGM without hearing some snide-rude comments from someone. It's far worse than you can ever imagine.

All this when the guy is fighting for a paycheck....do you think you could perform you're best? Hell no....

I'd like to see the Americans show up next yr with the airhorns, and the rest of the 'weapons' the Euro's use. Fair, is fair.

Tell it like it is, Rick S. Ain't it the truth. It seems to be a double standard with the Europeans. They can act like barbarians, but when Earl responds to their heckling, then all of a sudden, the European blue-blooded pool fan has nothing but negative things to say about Earl.

Just a little update on Earls way of making friends in Malta - in this case a lady in the reception.... !!!!

"Earl makes friends at reception
EARL Strickland, clearly feeling the pressure of the Mosconi Cup, was walking through the lobby of the Hilton Hotel early Saturday morning and the receptionist politely said 'Have a good day sir,' as Strickland passed her desk.

The Pearl turned to her and gave her a tirade about the size of the pockets, the crowd not appreciating his great play, and concluded with his time honoured rant that they don't treat golfers like this (what, on all expenses paid in one of the most luxurious hotels in Europe?) I bet she wished she'd never asked."

Copied from the gossip pages of Mosconi cup.

WTF!

I guess this is normal behavior in the US ?

Earl don't give a damn about a luxurious hotel.....he'd sleep in the street to bring the Cup back.

Yay, Nostroke! EXCELLENT point!

Seems like some Europeans have selective and/or limited memory banks. :p

Guess Earl would not get a chance to put his act on today:killingme:

Maybe one of the Europeans can throw an object at Earl, like they did the last Mosconi Cup.

Lots of hot air blowing them air horns over there in Malta this week.

BTW, is Norway represented in Team Europe? Oh, that's right. They have to cling on, much like a biker mentality to -- what do they call it? OH, yeah. The European Union. Seems like the individual countries don't have a strong enough base to stand on, like Team USA consisting of ONE COUNTRY.

:killingme: :killingme: :killingme: :killingme: :killingme:

Sorry folks, I got a little carried away. Actually I hope to see Earl on the table since I have not seen him playing in a long time.

Have to watch the match now, and may the best team win.

IMO...There is a severe lack of enthusiasm on our team.

US players do not convert individual sports into team sports well. The same thing happens in the Ryder Cup. Euros seem to thrive on this type of competition. The US always tends to excel when the Ryder Cup turns to individual matches...that is how we are programed in individual sports.

I would much rather see some $25K individual TAR matches between US and European players than watch the Mosconi Cup.
