Mosconi cup and EARL

Enteratinment

Isn't the Mosconi cup entertainment much like the Ryder Cup in golf?? All the back and forth :canoodle: seems out of place in respect too what this venue is all about...and what it does 'for the sport'. It is what it is, a business venture, seemingly successful and evolving, yet the threads haven't done the same. I gotta go 'water the horse', its a more productive pissing contest that I'm always the winner at.

How many % does USA give?

In 1970 the UN said that each country should give 0,7 % to poor countries. In 2003 only Norway, Sweden and Denmark did. Lather Belgium and Netherlands also reached that goal. Norway gives 1 %, which is more than UN is demanding.

The crowd is too rude.

I do not understand how this comment can be made. I was in Malta the first three days to support Team Europe and see world class Pool from both Team's. I shouted for my Team but obviously had the greatest respect for each individual member of the American Team. This respect was shown by almost all of the spectators to both teams but of course the noise for the European's was a bit louder..., what would you expect on European soil?
Before every match started, when the US players come to the table, they were welcomed by a warm applause, every good shot, jump or safety was followed by applause of the audience, there was NO interference during making a shot by the audience at all. In one of SvB matches a huge noise could be heared but this was not the audience but a security guard throwing some pole on the ground by accident.
The only exception, of course, was Mr. Strickland, who desperately asked to be treated different... His attitude and gestures during the whole tournament was just so out of place that he deserved to be ignored by the crowds. It was always him to start talking to the audience, it was him throwing a piece of chalk into the direction of Souquet/Feijen, so it was a natural reaction that the audience told him to "shhhh" (be quiet).
I can only repeat that every other player of the US Team has been welcomed with respect and got applause during the whole 3 days I was there, also Earl was welcomed that way before his very first match but than he started his show...

- I had the pleasure of talking to Johnny Archer for a second, what a wonderful and gentle person!
- Talking to Rodney Morris is simply fun, what a positiv man he is!
- Jeremy Jonesand Nick Varner, very proffessionel, always there for a signature or a picture.
- I missed to speak to SvB so can't comment but he must be a wonderful person having such a beautifull wife/girl friend (?). :D

- now we come to Mr. Strickland, well, how should I say, he either seems to be miles away with his thoughts, or he starts teaching you his view of Pool, that he's the greates pool player around, bla bla bla....

Mr. Strickland used to be an idol for me but seeing his performance "next to the table" made me change my mind about him a lot.

This is my view of the Mosconi Cup 2008.

Kind regards,
Pascal

Thanks for the great trip report, Pascal. It is nice to hear from those who were there to see it up front and close! :)

I have been reading some odd comments about SVB on this forum in recent times, i.e., his mind is on other things, has a problem he's dealing with, et cetera. I hope it's not the girlfriend that is causing him troubles. :(

Nice to hear what it really was like! Glad you enjoyed the show :)

Team EUROPE

Well, well, well. I wonder, pray tell, where Team Europe is in the War on Terrorism. Looks to me like Team USA is carrying the heavy load, while Team Europe members are counting their euros.

Yes, they are, bfdlad.

N-o-n-hyphen-p-o-o-l-hyphen-r-e-l-a-t-e-d, Jay.

To keep it pool-related:

Firefighters are trying to pinpoint what sparked a blaze that destroyed much of a pool hall, restaurant and lounge in the Mississippi River city of Alton, Illinois.

No one reportedly was injured in the blaze that apparently broke out early Monday at downtown Alton's Riverbend Billiards and Grill.

Walls near the front of the business collapsed during the fire.

Piasa Street, also known as U.S. 67, was closed in both directions so firefighters had room to work. Much of that traffic was being rerouted through downtown.

Another pool room bites the dust! :(

Thats what I been sayin all along Ragnar , Norway has been flyin under the radar being ranked #2 in per capita income after Luxembourg, so because you got all that $$$$ when is Norway goin to do somethin for pool and how about a $500,000 Norwegian open for men and one also for women since you guys are so wealthy ????

Earl

Earl is a cry baby & an embarrassment for the US.
If I could not find a replacement for Earl I would withdraw from the Mosconi Cup before I would allow him to make an ass out of himself again...

Fine since you guys are so wealthy I think we should move the UN out of NYC - and move it to Oslo or better yet how about Stavanger another popular watering hole - I'm sure the rest of the Euro- diplomats would be very happy up there - and it would save USA a few bucks. - lol

I don't understand why some people are saying that the fans were rude?
OK we were loud, but not during the shots.
After the frame we made as much noise as possible. Not to put the American Team off but to show our support for the European Team.
We used our whistles, horns, voices, hands and feet.
Don't think there's anything wrong with it?

Don't want to say much about Earl because I don't know him well enough as a player or person. But sometimes it looks likes he's asking for the sommotion around him.
The fans applauded for him. No boo-ing or anything like that. But when he starts calling Ralf a turd and mouthing off at some of the people in the audience: off course you'd expect a fierce reaction from the audience.
OK somebody threw a dummy in the tv arena again and he threw it back into the audience.
But don't generalise everybody.

We've applauded for every player. For some a bit louder than others.
We've applauded for every rack won by the Americans.
We've cheered for every rack won by the Europeans.
Off course there were more supporters for Team Europe: but it was held in Europe this year: What else did you expect?
Next year the American Team will get huge support from their fans in Vegas.

Just wanted to thank Johnny, Jeremy, Rodney + wife and kids, Nick and co for accepting my invitation to come to the party afterwards to have a few drinks, chat and have some fun. Really appreciated the sportmanship you've showed.

That's it for now. Hopefully I'll be able to come up to Vegas next year for the Mosconi Cup to support the European team again. Go Europe.

Sure it's OK to root for your team.....you guys just do it loudly! And sometimes a few do get a little carried away. Not all, just a few.

I'm glad you got the chance to go... I know how much fun Matchroom events are. They have a good bunch of people, from top to bottom. They make it exciting, for sure.

Hope to see you in Vegas next yr, and thanks for the help-updates, and video.
