With all the bad publicity CW is getting for being chosen as the new Mosconi Cup captain there isnt near as much talk about who it should have been if not him. Something like this may have already been posted, I didnt see it though.

Nick was always good but sometimes people like a change. One person I think would be good is Buddy Hall. Also how about Earl, that would have made for a LARGE turnout. What criteria do they go from when choosing a captain?

I would nominate Mike Massey. He's a great guy and he's in the BCA Hall of Fame. He's done a lot for the game. Although he's known for exhibitions and trick shots, he's played plenty of pro level competitive pool as well and was a member of the winning 1996 Mosconi Cup team.

I think he would be a very respectable choice for captain and representative of the team USA.

Chris:

As well as the fact that Mike Massey is also a Mosconi Cup alumni -- he'd played (several times, if I recall correctly) for Team USA, back in the Alex Higgins days.

So yes, I agree Mike would be an excellent choice for this honor!

I concur. I would have liked to have seen either him or (one of my favorites) Kim Davenport as non-playing team captain.

Who cares now, it's a done deal., root for TEAM AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!:)

Kick some pool playing ass!

Mosconi Cup!...Mosconi Cup!...Mosconi Cup!...Mosconi Cup!...Mosconi Cup!

Indeed, but there is always next year and a good following behind someone might go a long way. This is not a thread ment to knock CW or the MC, just to see who people think would fill the part best in the future.

Massey is a character and would probably liven up the atmosphere, Davenport is not bad either. How about Rempe?

lets see, i think johnny archer would make a good captain. hes a good all around player. or how about a good pool playing cue maker. sometimes the words of a non professional make more sense.

I'd suggest the opposite is true. The topic of who should have been captain has been beaten to death on the forum.

not a bad topic, and maybe too late, but I'm not ready to just bend over and accept CW just yet. Actually over the holiday the wife and I were talking about buying tickets to the Mosconi Cup. I just could not pull the trigger because of all the crap surrounding this years event. Maybe the DCC again this year instead?

I'm most bummed about not going to the TAR events.....they are going to be awsome matches!

other captain picks?

Rempe> walked away from the game....but not a bad choice.

Varner> sure, but it's been done, new blood needed.

Sigel> yea, that might work, and full of controversy, but would never happen IMO.

Hopkins> my choice! still plays in Pro events, understands how big events work, respected HOF legend....can't really think of a reason why not?

I like Incardona for the spot myself, funny you never here him mentioned.

Agree with Hopkins awesome choice not to mention a genius on the table I know his pool knowledge well exceeds CW.

Can someone tell me exactly what a Mosconi captain's responsibilities are? I'm guessing he comes up with the schedule, but I can't imagine any captain doing that autocratically! I mean, even in my APA pool leagues, I give the players the choice of match as much as I can; I can only imagine how it is in the Mosconi cup.

So if the players order and the doubles pairing are all done collectively, what does the captain does solely that requires him/her to be exceptionally good? In other words, unlike football where a coach's decision to go on 4th and inches could make or break a match, could a Mosconi captain's decision power affect the outcome of the tournament?
