Mosconi Cup Coverage and Discussion Dec 10-13.

maybe this has been commented on already, if so, i apolgize.....the match between JA and van den burg will, for me, goes down as one of the most memorable come backs in pool history.the first few racks i could have beat JA the way he was shooting,..then to top it off,.i mean we got a guy in the stands saying something about JA"S wife, so bad, that JA stops shooting and basically tells the guy they are going to have to meet outside after...kudos to JA. then sits in his chair after being down 4-2, nick on the hill, and is saying something to himself (sure do want to know what that was) and comes back and wins 5-4...WOW!...:bow-down:

so where do you draw a line then? sneezing while the guy is on backswing? Calling him names while he is on table? Chalking your queue 20cm away from him while he is shooting.....
so they should be allowed as well as it is only sharking?
besides, if there is a ref at the table, what business does the opponent or anyone else in the room have to call a foul?
I think there should be actually a rule against that. Any challenge on the ref-ruling (or in this case ref not calling a foul) that turns out groundless (video-ruling etc), should automatically lead to a ball-in-hand for the player at the table.

IMO if your sharking your sharking
I honestly don't know why they agree to even play with all that garbage going on

IMO if you count the missed makeable shots for both teams you will find the US team has missed many more than Europe. Also the US break is weak again. You have to make the 1-ball in the side and get your QB in back of the headstring where the 2-ball goes on most breaks. The break should have been the only thing needed to practice. As for missing balls, you can't teach that at that level. They either lose focus, take the shot for granted, or the ball skids. Johnnyt

the difference here is that you have the player sharking another player, the crap that is going on is coming from the audience. The euro-players, as far as I have seen, been nothing but ultimate professionals about it the whole time. The only thing is that Niels Feijen did not immediately shake hands with Mike Dechaine but hugged his rushing team-mates and then within 5 seconds turned to him and shook hands. He was already complaining that he was standing there for 5min waiting and was apparently upset about it. So a bit of an exaggeration there. So I have hard time calling that "incident" (even if you could call it that) as anything...a social fumble at best.

As far as the players agreeing playing to it....can you think of any pro in the world that would say no to playing in that tournament?? The atmosphere there is something that makes it as successful and exciting as it is. Sure the money is good as well....you show up and you already make money....you get good visibility (and your sponsors) through it...

This is afterall, day 4....................

I missed this match, unfortunately. Kudos to Johnny Archer for sure for standing up to the houligans who would stoop so low as to say something about a player's wife, while he is playing a match.

It's a little late now, but I actually expected Team Europe to take a firm, vocal stand against how the crowd was acting toward Team USA, instead of appreciating their fervor.

Fair is fair and right is right. I truly don't think Matchroom Sports wants fisticuffs to be the final say in how these things are settled.

I love a give and take banter as well as the next guy, but fans who interrupt a player's play, talking about his wife, should be removed from the arena, IMMEDIATELY. Hooting and hollering while a player is down on a shot should be given one warning and then the boot. I would prefer the players to do their own woofing.

And speaking about sharking: How is it that a player can sit in his chair flexing his hands, doing hand flashes while a player is down on the shot and that not be called sharking or "GAMESMANSHIP" at the very least?

That goes for the oldest move in the book also, "wiping your cue down with a large, white towel, while your opponent is shooting a shot".

Please.....................

If it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander.

Joey,

I've read a few of your posts about the crowd & sharking. I agree with most all of what you say. We've got American football & they've got rugby & 'football'/soccer. All have screaming fans. That's not the problem. It's the isolated comment, noise, camera flash, etc, that comes totally unexpected from out of the silence. That's the problem. Anyone can learn to deal with just loud 'niose'. As to the wife thing, the match should have been stopped until whoever made that comment was located & escorted to a holding room to latter be confronted by Mr. Archer. Or... Johnny could have asked for an extention & started walking or running toward that section of the arena. No he handled it very well. But... the stopping the match etc. should have been done.

As to the players sharking, as I said before, they will be Sharked Big Time by the Ultimate Pool God.

Best Regards,

Best Regards,

I've read in Freddy The Beard's book that alot of the all-time greats sharked. And they were really good at it. So I guess I'm not sure if sharking is a good or a bad thing at this point. It has provided for some funny stories in the Beard's book.

I would agree with the fact that whoever said something about JA wife (or shouts anything about the players themselves while they are shooting) should be escorted out of the building

but I have a problem that the players are held responsible for what the audience does.

so far I have not seen any obvious sharking from players of either team.....well apart from the incident with Nick ekonomomopopopolous (or something like that) and I am not 100% sure if that was really a sharking event or just calling for a foul. In any case, the ref there is for a purpose, and I call out anyone that claims either Mr Reese or Ms Tabb is being biased, to provide some proof or get the hell out of dodge.
I stand by my opinion that if you call out a foul on your opponent and after checking the video (that is available there in Mosconi) it turns out to be a false alarm....the person/team who called the foul should be punished by awarding a BIH to the other team.

Challenge flags! Or challenge buzzers!

I don't think it's a useful or healthy thing to argue that a player should be able to fade all sharking. If people read that or believe it, you basically give fans permission to shark.

"Go ahead and do whatever you want. It's up to the player to overcome it. If he misses the shot, it's his fault".

I know that's not the intention, you want to encourage players to toughen up and focus, but the practical result is still the same - it buts the burden on the player and not on the guy in the seats.

The player already has enough burden put on him, he's got the task of playing at the highest level, under intense pressure, with money and national pride at stake. The fan has the task of sitting in his chair & drinking beer. Why not ask that guy to do his part rather than piling even more weight onto the player?

Link to the JA "wife" incident

Folks:

For those that missed it, here's a link to the match in question concerning JA and the "wife" incident:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lbnl-_OP5k4#t=30m10s
(Link-cheat included, that takes you right to the shot and the "wife" thing.)

As stated before, JA is a class act to be able to admonish this numbskull in the crowd, yet retain his composure and focus to come from behind and take this match away from Nick Van den Berg.
