Mosconi Cup Day 4 (Final Day)

I always like to remember that it is the US against the best from over a dozen different countries. I doubt any one country can send five players and beat the US.
Yeah I’ve thought about asking matchroom to make it a different European country each year, instead of the whole of Europe to choose from. It would definitely even things out lol.

Or maybe Europe just throws out their medium speed players instead of the best 😂

David Alcaide - we must ban him from the cup lol. I love watching the guy play except he’s always on the opposite team that I’m rooting for. He is rock solid every single time out, one of the best MC cup players.

Albin as well. I’m usually on edge if either of those two are at the table during this shindig.

Biggest thing that jumed out at me during that presser is MR calling out the USA method for team selection. Hopefully MR can throw some weight at this issue.
What jumped out was the writing on the wall that Alex Lely will be replaced as captain by Karl Boyes in 2022.
Emily said she is "worried" that Lely is doing such a great job. And Lely looked like he was pleading for 3rd year (a 3 year stint) while Emily grinned . Then Emily asked Lely about Boyes as vice-captain and Boyes was quiet throughout. Already there was chatter in commentary box about Boyes as future captain. Boyes has been loyal 4 to 5 years part of Matchroom team last 2 years as vice captain so there may be back room deal to move him up to top job. This was similar to Johan who was dropped after 2 consecutive wins in charge of USA and replaced by vice captain JJ.
So it is reverse of Peter Principle- if you perform and do great job, they fire you :ROFLMAO: Of cos, this is all speculation. We will know when they announce the captains early next year.

I thought team members going in the pit after every win in a match was rather juvenile and unprofessional. Little League baseballesque.
Yes I never liked that either. Reminds me of the women’s softball they show on ESPN where they celebrate at the end of every inning like they have just won the game. It’s always bothered me with soccer players and hockey players as well, although goals in those games are relatively rare which is why I guess they are so celebrated.

Looking at those Fargo ratings, it's not even close: The Philippines have eleven players with a 790 or better Fargo rating: Orcullo, Biado, Corteza, Chua, Aransa, Ignacio, Garcia, de Luna, Bustamante, Gomez, and Kiamco.

After that, Taipei and the US have four each, but the quality of the Taiwanese (Pin Yi Ko 821, Jun Lin Chang 821, Ping Chung Ko 816, Kun Lin Wu 795) is much higher than ours (SVB 830, Sky 802, Dechaine 802, Bergman 795). And those numbers don't even reflect the level of competition that the non-US players are up against on a regular basis, or that Dechaine and Bergman seem to be in semi-retirement.

If the US ever wants to become competitive once again, it's going to have to figure out a way to get more of its top players playing in more international tournaments that aren't stateside based. And maybe not be spending so much time on those toy tables known as Bar Boxes.

5 poles above 785 and that's excluding konrad, skowerski..

i mentioned china and taiwan as well, they don't show up on fargo right now because of travel restrictions, but i have no doubt both of them could field a team capable of beating the US and giving the euros a run for their money too. jmho

I agree on the barbox deal but the problem is these guys have to eat and there are far more good paying bb events than on the big table. Bergman is still playing a lot in St.Louis. He just hasn't traveled much at all since covid started. I think MD has been playing a little more lately buts its really just part-time money for him.

I think that if the level of play in the US is going to improve, the effort has to be much more grass roots. You need to bring more kids into the game and not wait until they are old enough to play in bars.

We had a national tour in the US this past year. The results are interesting:

In order to qualify to be on the USA Mosconi Team
1. Whatever the current player choosing rules/criteria are in place.
2. Every candidate must have a Minimum 3 Students 7yrs-18yrs old. Verified with documented results.

Maybe the onus should be put on those who would most benefit from a resurgence of cue sports in the US -- the various billiard companies.

The other problem is that for the majority of top players, teaching juniors would be an entirely new skill.
