Mosconi Cup Day One

2-2, but after mistakes, Albin looks to win. And Albin wins, 3-2, race to 5.
If we lose this match, there’s a chance we might not even make it to day 4. So sad after that great comeback in the opening match, which was obviously a wake up call for team Europe.

Shane broke, made 2 balls on the break, and they're blossomed out like a flower. He should run this rack. Should. :p

I didn't watch the first match. But has any player played really well?

I guess the super fast and slick conditions are affecting everyone.

It's 3-3. Albin breaks, pockets the 1, but the 2 ball looks tough.

Some of the players look like they're being tortured. Not a happy event.

Albin on the hill, 4-3. Shane's break next. He breaks, makes the conventional 1 in the side and is on a run. Fingers crossed.

It's double hill, and Albin breaking. And he breaks dry. Shane to the table and can see the 1. He runs out and wins. It's now Europe 3 and USA 2 at the end of the day. Whew! We needed that one!

Gutsy run out by Shane to win the last match 5-4. USA trails 3-2. Not bad considering what transpired today. Rough day for all the players. Doubtful they had cumulatively an .800 TPA (Accu-Stats) or .700 Fargo ratings. Shane showed real leadership quality when they most needed it. (y)

Great day one for the fans. Not necessarily the greatest play, but a lot of drama back and forth. The table and balls were slick and I think that caused several misses. Nice to see humans play the game occasionally! lol

These are among the top players in the world. For this event, they should be tested on the very toughest of equipment and should certainly all be able to adjust very quickly to slick, lightning fast cloth and tight pockets.

That's the best 3 consecutive games I've ever seen Shane play in a Mosconi Cup, especially under that level of pressure. Break and run in game 6, (Albin broke and ran game 7), break and run in game 8, and run 9 and out on Albin's dry break in game 9.

Chris was hot and cold all day. Made some of the best runouts of the afternoon, but then let the adrenaline get to him on that fatal 7 ball. I thought he could've then cut the 8 in the corner and gone around the table for the 9 for much better position, but it's hard to tell from a monitor just how easily that might've played out.

Hallelujah. Shane, by beating Albin, keeps it close at 3-2 behind, ending one of the most poorly played sessions in Mosconi Cup history. As dreadfully as Europe played, it would have been a crying shame if they slept on a 4-1 lead. That said, there was no reason to expect all these players that barely competed this year to come out on all cylinders. Safe bet the play will be a lot better tomorrow. Felt bad for the commentators, who had to make excuse after excuse for the players after an almost endless parade of errors in all areas of the game, but with a few matches under their belts now, I think we'll see some better stuff in Session 2. Good luck to all these fine players on Wednesday.

Despite a disappointing position play error that cost him the double hill rack against Kaci, I'd say Chris Robinson played very well today. His long bank closed out the five on five team match.

Tomorrow should be fun.

I’m not a banker, so it’s hard for me to fathom why any pro level 9-ball player would ever choose a bank shot over a makeable cut shot, unless there was no feasible way to get shape playing the cut shot.

Chris did fine, but he also dogged a couple of shots. I'm not sure that everyone didn't dog a shot or two. They all at least played some positional errors mainly due to the table speed.

FYI, matches 2-5 are already available for viewing on YouTube.
