Mosconi Cup...pick your five!

Screw the mosconi. I'm a u.s. Resident and have played pool forever. I will root for Europe, Mark Wilson has come in and changed stuff up which is great, but to not include Mike Dechaine is a joke. He is an elite player that has no wrong doings in the mosconi cup like some that can no longer participate.

I'm not taking anything away from players listed I think there are 8, and we know 2 of them are for sure playing. Out of the rest only Justin Bergman comes anywhere near Mike Dechaines level of play. I know a lot of people don't like Mikes attitude, but you must respect his play and accomplishments, they speak for themselves.

We are dipping to 3rd tier pros from the U.S. To fill out the mosconi roster, pretty sad.

Those top players that you can forget, they will not be playing the mosconi anymore in the near future:
Johnny Archer
Earl Strickland
Rodney Morris
Dennis Hatch

Strickland I can understand for his anti sportsmanship attitude but why is Archer in thayt list?

That is a good question. Lets see if it gets answered with a specific reason that has been proven or if it is just an idea thrown out there to let imaginations run wild and rumors to start.

I've also wondered why Archer's name gets tossed around with some of these guys when talking about "bans" or "suspensions" from certain events. I've never seen this guy act like anything but a professional in 20 years.

Create a criteria. Top 5 ranked American players from the previous year. Makes it fair. There are guys working to get to the top. Take away personality and fan favorites. Pick the top 5 players working to get to the top.

It's time to get past this. America will leave three of its top five players home this year, namely Dechaine, Morris and Archer, but that's neither here nor there.

Mark Wilson established the criteria he saw fit for team selection and has applied them in coming down to eight. Our focus should be on the selected eight, which are Van Boening, Dominguez, Hall, Shuff, Bergman, Deuel, Schmidt, and Sossei. In terms of playing credentials and results in the last couple of years, I'd pick these five:

1. Shane Van Boening
obviously

2. Justin Bergman
Looked solid at the Derby, beat a killer field at the Markulis including a win over Biado in the final. Justin is America's newest superstar.

3. Jeremy Sossei
Came 7th at the US Open 9-ball event and was 2nd at Turning Stone. Second best player on the Joss Northeast tour, but well behind Dechaine. Takes down some big names in competition, and that's the quality this team needs badly.

4. Corey Deuel
Played decently at the Derby City nine ball, but embarrassed himself in the Bigfoot 10-ball. A feel player with great talent. I am very concerned, though, about how poorly he played when the shot clock was on at the Derby.

5. Justin Hall
Looked solid at the Derby. Great all-around talent who won the all around at the 2012 Southern Classic, a huge accomplishment.

Whichever players Mark selects, I'll respect his choices, but until then, the speculation is fun. I hope other American fans will follow suit.

It looks like a personality contest to me. They don't even have the top players listed. I hope USA gets their ass kicked again.

The Linwood Lions team would fair better than what we had last year. That is where my 5 would come from, just to have our "professional" players learn some humility. Humble down 'merica'!

After a blundering Mosconi cup performance like this one http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pIv93L_LiHI V Van den Berg, any captain would be lynched if he brings back Mike Dechaine . His attitude does not help either
This is team event +it is race to 5 , so really any top player can beat each other. So really
It isn't about picking top ranked player it is about picking those who can play as a team and more importantly play under pressure . No point picking the top ranked player if he crumbles under Mosconi Cup pressure.
Give him another chance ? Heck it is like running for POTUS, previous Presidential nominees seldom get another chance cos there are others in the queue who will say "You had your chance you choked so now it is our turn":)

Okay to me the first two are gimme's...Shane Van Boening and Cory Deuel.
The third would have to be Justin Bergman but the water starts getting murky after that.

You have Oscar Dominguez, Sky Woodward, Brandon Shuff, Earl Strickland, Chip Compton, Joey Gray, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer, Alex Olinger, Tommy Kennedy, Shaun Wilke, Robb Seaz, Rodney Morris, Shannon Daulton, Jeremy Sossi, Scott Frost, and Shannon Murphy as a few to choose from. Feel free to add other names. What say you AZ?

It kind of doesn't matter who we think should be in the Mosconi Cup at this juncture. The selection criteria of days gone by for this great event has been flawed for a long, long time, and it began with the leader of the UPA and his favoritism practices.

Because of that, the powers-that-be have decided to go in a new direction with Mark Wilson's stable of players. It's at the very early stages right now, so we may get a better lens on the developments as we get close and close to the date of the 2014 Mosocni Cup.

Apparently, skill is not the only prerequisite to being on Team USA this year. That said, my picks would be Justin Bergman, Sky Woodward, Oscar Dominguez so far. I'll leave the last two as wildcards, to be picked sine die. It's too early, folks!

SVB
Corey
Oscar
J. Bergmam
Sky

This is exactly the team I would send! I just do not understand the criteria for making the cut into the final 8. I would have them play for it in more than one setting. Then pick the top performers for that pool of players.

Thanks for the reply JAM! The process for picking the Mosconi Cup team needs to be transparent for all to see. Ability above all should be the driving factor.

Normally, I would agree with you, but this is not our show, not our venue, not our tournament. Mosconi Cup is not the BCA or WPA. It's a private enterprise, and as such, they call the shots.

This year, because of the flawed American selection criteria in the past, Matchroom Sport is going to try out a new method for Team USA. I'm in a wait-and-see mode at this juncture. I understand *why* this has happened.

Curiously, though, I do wonder if Matchroom Sport is putting the Team Europe members under the microscope like they are Team USA. Team Europe's hands aren't clean from 2013, either.

Do tell...I wondered what was happening on the other side of the fence.

Archer and Hatch and Morris are team players. its a team event. ultimately u need clutch players, not even the most dominant one.

Johhny Archer is a no-brainer. 😛
