Mosconi/Fats match of the century

I'm so glad this video was posted. I've heard about it so often but never thought I'd get to see it. What a classic!

I just finished the book "The Huster and the Champ" last week. If offers very interesting insight into the two men's lives. Lots of good Jay Helfert quotes in it too, BTW.

I just finished it. Pretty Good book but not as good as Hustler Days.

In fact, that's what gave me the idea to look at the video again and then to post it.

This was some video to watch, especially someone as young as me. I enjoyed every minute of that match, all 2 1/2 hours of it.
I you look closely, they played the whole game different back then, position play back then is not how it is now. When young Hoppy played you can see the difference quite well, IMHO. Once again ty for that great video, please post more if you have them.

GREAT video. Thanks for the link! I really enjoyed it. Wish there were more from this era to look at. Where can one find these gems?

Another Minnesota Fats snippet: As "Minnesota Fats", he gained enough attention to appear in a televised exhibition match against Willie Mosconi. Mosconi beat Wanderone in the games. For a few years, there were rematches on TV with Wanderone and Mosconi, in which Mosconi beat Wanderone without much trouble. These proved to be popular with television audiences, and may also have contributed to his fame. He appeared on What's My Line? in the 1960s, successfully stumping the panel.

Wanderone, with his hustler persona, enjoyed promoting the so-called "feud" with the reserved Mosconi. He would publicly state, "I may have 'given away' a few games to deserving competitiors, but I have never lost a real money game since I was old enough to spell 'Weeli Mesconi.'"

That is the most entertaining pool match I have ever seen. We all know the story of these two, but it was cool to see it on tape. Great post and great find.

Great Post!
Loved it!

What kind of format is your original video in and how did you convert it to AVI?

video

It probably started out vhs. I converted to dvd. Since then I've used AutoGK to shrink the size down to 200mb as an avi file. Sometimes I convert them to mp4 to watch on my Ipod.

I am uploading another one with Mosconi and will do a new post when it is up. This one is a home video taken of Mosconi in someone's basement. A lot of talking and a bit of demonstrating by Mosconi. This was the subject of a George Fels column a few years back.

One point you showed up at Fats house and he got a bunch of Hamburger, threw it in the driveway and whistled for the neighborhood dogs??

True story, blew me away!

Having just read this new book, 'The Hustler and the Champ', and the 'Running the Table: The Legend of Kid Delicious, the Last Great American Pool Hustler' book as well (fantastic), I was noticing that old videos that were on Youtube previously of Mosconi playing 14.1 are now not available. I wonder if the family had them removed due to exclusive rights etc.? In any event, that makes these old films that much more enjoyable, and valuable too I'd say. Be stealthy:p . Thanks for the treat...Tom

Thanks a bunch. Brought me back to college when
I used to see him once or twice a month.

Near the end of the video when Fats banks a ball off the short into the side pocket? Well I'm here to tell you it's my opinion he shot that shot. I've seen him play many a game of banks and the one rail into the side off the short rail was a specialty of his. What better way in addition to the talk can you think of than to "luck" a crucial shot in to hustle a guy. I tell you it was the shot he played.

Dennis,
You also posted a Ray Martin video. It was made in Merrimack NH at The Cue Connection owned by Al Baron. I was running the camera. That video brought back memories.
Thanks
Glen

Did you keep a copy of it? When was it made?

No I did not keep a copy. It was Al Barons equipment. I will PM my contact info and we can talk.
