Ok, maybe I'm looking at this picture wrong or something.

Look at the hand holding the cue near the ferrule. Is that someone else's hand? If that is Willie's left hand, how could he get it where the knuckles are against his body like that?

It's normal. Thumb, forefinger, middle finger, ring finger, pinky... If I stare at it for a long time I can imagine it looking odd but it's not.

It's impossible to get your left hand in that position against the left side of your body. Your thumb being on the top outside, your forefinger on the inside top, which puts your pinky on the inside bottom.

His fore-finger is on the outside, it's looks a bit strange cause his thumb seems to be in the place of his fore-finger but it isn't.

I was looking at it like his knuckles were against his body. I was thinking someone else was sticking their hand in there as part of the trick.

Yup, I can see it now. I was twisting my hand all over the place trying to figure out how he did that. I won't be able to play tonight, I think I permanently damaged my left wrist.

That was a confusing photograph, like one of those that you can see a couple different ways. I polished Willie's fingernails here to help aid the eye perceive that his thumb is on top, with the rest of his fingers folded around and pointing towards his body.

The thing that I find interesting is that he shot masses with his stroking hand (right hand here) in a "thumbs down" position, whereas most billiard players like semih sayginer have their stroking hands in a "thumbs up" position. Can't say which is better from experience - I can't do those shots either way.

I have seen it both ways, and although I don't shoot these shots either, it seems like the thumbs down hand position gives similar hand/wrist/arm mechanics to a regular stroke, whereas the thumbs up position is more of a stabbing motion.

Make a closed hand bridge around your cue without extending your fingers. In other words, make a loose fist.

Take the cue vertical and hold your bridge hand to your side. You're just using the side of your body to stabilize your hand.

I use this all the time with extreme masse shots when the cue ball is near the rail.

You are definitely looking at it wrong. That's his foot, and that's not his thumb, it's his big toe. It's a just a standard head-over-heel masse shot.

His palm is in toward his body and his knuckles are outward. For whatever reason, it sounds like you're seeing it exactly opposite. That's his hand.

I can only imagine poor Willie rolling in his grave if were ever to see that picture now. Come to think of it I might get more action if I polish my nails like that. Nah!
