Mosconi Videos?

Are there any videos out there that show Mosconi when he was still playing well? I saw a match between him and Caras and, while he was older and he didn't play well at all, he was young enough that he looked like he was still capable of playing well.

Up till the exact second he moved on he played well...

He didn't play well that match - not that he couldn't play well at all at that time. Anyway, I'm talking about when he was still capable of running hundreds. I don't want to upset any Mosconi fans, but he wasn't doing that in his twilight years. It doesn't mean that he wasn't a fantastic player (which, obviously, is why I'd like to get my hands on some video of him playing well). It just means he was human.

I don't know of any video's of Mosconi playing actual matches in his prime but I do have a video which is about 90 minutes long and it has many old clips. Some clips are only 30 seconds, some are 5 or 6 minutes long, it covers a variety of players like a young Mosconi doing trickshots on a 5 x 10 table, Wille Hoppe doing trickshots, Jake Schaefer playing balkline in the 1920's, and Ralph Greenleaf losing the 1925 World title (2 minute clip of final match) and Greenleaf regaining the title in 1926: in that clip he runs the last 6 balls of a 125 and out run for the title and he looked so smooth.

I really believe that there have people with old reels of film from the Mosconi era that probably left the reels in an old attic and then maybe died and their kids cleaned out the attic and threw the stuff out or something like that. I've heard that there's a film out there somewhere (very rare) of Greenleaf running 2 or 3 racks of straight pool on stage when he was doing the vaudeville circuit. I'd love to get my hands on that one!

I also want to express my interest in Willie Mosconi tapes/dvd's/video's . The man is the greatest straight-pooler of all time.

I've seen that Antique Billiards set of 3, that has bits of Mosconi, Greenleaf, Hoppe and others.

I've seen the Mosconi/Caras Chicago 14.1 match where Caras wins and Mosconi pouts.

There's a lot of stuff out there with Mosconi, Fats and others playing a lot of different games (never 14.1), but they are all kind of old.

There's the tribute dinner to Mosconi and Caras but they are again rather old.

I have a home video of Mosconi in his basement but he is pretty old.

There is also the Pocket Billiards instructional of Mosconi's.

I know of no other video of Mosconi. Does anyone?

JM,
Bert Kinister sells the complete series of every billiard short ever made. One contains Mosconi instructing the viewer in how to make a straight pool run - he says he'll run 50, then does it in no time flat (often setting up for the next shot while whitey is still rolling into its final position, talking continuously during the run). It is black and white, on an 8 footer, and AFTER his stroke, but he obviously was still playing at a fairly high level.

I wonder if ABC has any film or tape in their achives from the 60's when they televised the Straight pool championships?

Where did you buy these DVD's? I can't seem to find them anywhere by searching for "Antique Billiards".

I have a video of a match with Mosconi and I from 1956. He ran 150 and out on me so I never make an appearance in the video. Probably not worth buying then, huh Jimmy?:D

World of Pocket Billiards

I have a VHS tape with Willie being interviewed by Bill Flemming:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009MJE6A/104-9022207-8039926?v=glance&n=404272

I forgot where I bought my copy.

He goes through the basics of pool, shows the trick shots from "The Hustler" and runs 28 balls 14.1 in about 3 minutes. He is old (1981) but his stroke was so smooth and he could cue the ball effortlessly and it would just be like a yo yo on a string.

Recommended.

any chance a guy could get a copy of that?

I would love a copy of that too.

DJKey-man,
I think most of us would not wish to see the 1 year old Rude Dog match up with an old guy after his stroke.

Rude Dog, you must have been quite a child prodigy.

P.S. - guys, videotape wasn't even invented until the 1960's (and then only huge machines used by television stations). Even the best movie cameras of the 50's could only record 20-30 minutes of film without changing reels. I think Rude Dog might be pulling (??humping??) your leg just a little.

I'm new to the AZ Forums . I've been reading them for about six mouth before today . :) ;) I am looking forward to Discussing this graet sport .:)

Film to VHS conversion is possible. It would only take Willie about 45 minutes to run 150. I saw him run 187 at an exhibition in the 70s in less than an hour.

I'd pay for a copy too.
