I played in a charity tournament that the hospital I work for setup. I'll call the guy that ran it Mr. A and another person Mrs. B to protect them.

Flyer states Double-Elimination 8-Ball, Mens and Womens divisions. I email Mr. A to find out some details, what the races are, no answer.

We get to the pool hall, about 60 people are there. Almost 1 hour after the scheduled start, they start calling names for a PARTNERS setup. We get to our tables. No word on what rules we are using, or the races. Turns out they did print the official BCA 8-ball rules out and left one at each table, but the people who showed up to practice took them. Great, real rules at least. 2 minutes after, the announcer gets on the mike, sorry, it's a singles tournament. The person you were partnered with is now your opponent.

OK then.

No word yet on the races, so I talk to the guy and he states they want something "quick", I say race to 3, he said sure and announces that. I play my first game and win, rack up another and I'm at my 3rd shot in that when Mr. A goes on the mike and announces "If you won your first game come up and let us know". OK then. I got up and ask "when you mean your "game" do you mean your match?" "No, your game". Turns out they decided on one game sets but did not tell anyone except Mr. A and Mrs. B.

Ooookay.

On the way back to the table to tell the guy I just beat in one game, Mrs. B goes on the mike and said "There was some confution with the rules, it's not ball in hand on a foul it's behind the line". So I ask her if the 8 ball is left and you get the ball, do you spot the 8 so you can shoot it? Nope, you need to go "up and down at it because we're not playing by Pool Hustler rules".

Oooookay. 10 minutes into the tournament there were 2 format and 1 rule change. Wait there is more. We get done with the first matches and find out THERE WERE NO BRACKETS done, they were just circling the winners on a big list. Sigh.. my brother-in-law knows one of the regulars in the place and goes behind the counter with the manager and makes up some brackets, we are set to play our 2nd match 1.5 hours after the first match.

So, at the end of all that, to detemine the final winner, they tell us that the Mens winner will play the Womens winner. This comes out in light ohhh.. 4 hours after we start. I come in 5th out of about 45 men, my brother-in-law comes in 4th, we get no prize, no plaque, nothing.

Beat that for a F-ed up tournament.

I notice you're in MA. Please tell me where so I can avoid it...LOL...

that is definitely messed up.

I cant imagine anyone topping that one..LOL Just crazy I don't know if that really qualifies as a tournament or a waste of time?

This was played in the Worcester Jillians. Not a bad place really, and they just did what our orginizers setup.

It's a charity event. The people probably were clueless and wanted to do something "fun." I bet the directors of the event weren't pool players.

It's for charity, for fun and prob for a good cause so I'd never sweat it.

Not half as bad as our recent BCA Texas State 8-Ball Championships. This tournament was an embarrassment to Texas.....SPF=randyg

I was only joking man. Being that it was a charity I would be surprised if it went off without a hitch.

I went to a tournament once where the TD had 18 players, leaving 14 byes in the first round of the bracket.

She started at the top, filling in names and left all the byes on the bottom of the bracket. After I saw what she had done, I realized she didn't know how to space byes in a bracket so I helped her reset the brackets.

Then I realized that she intended to give all the money to first place and nothing for any other places. I told her she might want to rethink that if she wanted people to come to her tournaments.

I haven't been back.

They did raise a bunch of money for the AHA, but you really need to think about some things when you put an event together. The funny part is that they set it up as a "fun" thing but everyone was walking around with a "WTH are they doing" look on their faces. Most people there were actually pool players to some extent.

I played in a tournament that had a full 16 player bracket. Along comes another player, so the TD just added that person into the bracket by drawing an extra line. I enjoyed watching the TD try to figure out where the 17th player was going to play and where the loser of that match would play. It might have been the most mess upped bracket that I have ever seen.

Now that is a BAD THING!!!!

Maybe Jay Halfert will chime in about the Big Tourny he was TD in that was in Phoenix a couple of years ago, wher the TOP FINISHER, and Jay Got RUBBER CHECKS.

Hang, I don't think you're seeing the big picture here. Just think of the comradery and good fellowship you experienced while promoting this wonderful game/sport we all love so much. I only wish that I could have been there to cheer you and all those good people on.

Good job Bruce! Way to continue to beat a dead horse! :deadhorse: How many more times are you gonna bring this up? The tournament ran fine (which is what this thread is about). The problem with the payouts was the promoter's fault, and was resolved to all the players' satisfaction (due to some help from Mark Griffin...).

I will say that it sounds messed up but it also sounds like most first attempts at a Charity function doing something different than the norm.

I bet a bunch of people had fun. Did you really expect to get something for finishing 4th in a charity pool tournament? Hopefully they at least thanked you.

One suggestion is to tell them that you appreciate them having the event helping to raise money for a worthwhile cause. Explain that you are an avid pool player and would love to run the event for them next year.
I don't think you would have to organize it but rather run the event.

60 players for a charity pool event... i would be drooling at the fundraising opportunity. Really thats a great turnout. Tell whoever promoted it to spread the word about how much they appreciated the participation.

Sorry the experience was so negative for you. Here are a few points in hindsight....it was a charity tourny and presumably most entered to support this charity. I played in a charity tourny once where the winner recieved $50 and no other prize monies were offered.....the winner even redonated his winnings back to the charity ,( IMHO what every winner of a charity tourny should do) Not one soul ever complained about the lack of prize money.....it was for charity for gawds sake!

If I had stumbled into the chaos you did.....I would have offered my services to help establish some kind of order and structure, i came there with the intent of helping......and playing isn't the only way I can help.

Rather than simply remove this event from my next years callendar.....I would ask to be involved in the planning and staging of next years tourny, and invite as many of my pool playing friends to do the same.....it was a worthwhile charity before this......why should a mishap change that.....especially a mishap I can help prevent from happening again.

Think the other personal expierence was the tueday nighter I use to play weekly. Week before the "FU" it was pouring like it does in MOONSOON, three showed, Tourny Cancelled., and I saw why.

THE VERY NEXT WEEK I show up and the B/O says it was cancelled because he had a CHANCE to get some Extra League Player for that week. 40 mile Round Trip down the DRAIN!
