Mother drills?

ball-banger

I hate this damn game!

I have seen mother drills mentioned many times here, but what exactly are the mother drills? I mean, how do you do them? I've heard that they can improve your overall game, so I would really like to try them.

The 7 mother drills are the base drills for the Set, Pause, Finish (SPF) methodology.

ball-banger...The Mother Drills are designed to ingrain your perfect pool process. They are very simple exercises, that, without the instruction to teach you what to practice, and how to practice, have little value. Using them, after you have had video analysis of your stroke, by an SPF instructor, is what makes them so powerful. By themselves, they wouldn't mean anything. Most of them use only one ball (as a CB). If you're interested in pursuing SPF instruction PM me, and I can point you towards an SPF instructor.

Great advice, I highly recommend contacting Scott. He is a true gentleman and excellent teacher to boot.

Pardon my ignorance, but .... What is SPF instruction? I have always used the BCA site and sought out licensed/registered BCA instructors.

Wow, that's the least you can say!!

Scott really does a great job of teaching, and a lot of AZers have takin advantage of his classes. You don't have to go far to find overwhelmingly positive reviews.

The Mother Drills are a set of drills that help people diagnose flaws in and strengthen their fundamentals. FYI, many examples of drills that do this, from a wide range of sources, can be found here:

But as Scott points out, spending time with a qualified and experienced instructor can be much more beneficial than trying to do drills alone.

8Ball48043...Happy to explain...within the BCA Certified Instructor program there is a large group of instructors who are part of our SPF "family of instructors". These teachers are skilled in diagnosing stroke problems, using video review, and using the Mother Drills to help reinforce good habits, which allow the student literally to teach themselves how to play better. More importantly, the students acquire diagnostic tools, that allow them to "fix" themselves, when something is not working correctly. Not all BCA instructors are SPF, but ALL SPF instructors are BCA Certified. There are many BCA instructors who are very good at what they do, even if they are not part of the SPF group. There are also many fine instuctors who are not within the BCA program. All of this a good thing, because we need as many teachers as we can get, in this country. There are millions of poolplayers who struggle with their game and process, and can be helped with qualified instruction (qualified, imo, means the instructor uses video analysis).

Ditto

I attended a course the Randyg runs out of his school in Dallas. As Scott pointed out, the Mother Drills are exactly as he describes.

Randy said the the term "Mother Drills" comes from various sources, e.g, They are The Mother of all Drills, or perhaps by the time you get halfway through them you'll be calling them something else involving the word Mother.

At any rate, even if you find them somewhere online as Scott pointed out and I can attest to......without the instruction of a qualified SPF instructor the drills on paper won't be of much use.

Hope this helps.

An even better reason to seek out qualified instructors is that you take a LOT of time off of the learning curve. Certainly almost anyone can learn something by themselves, from reading internet sites (like Dr. Dave's, etc), reading books, watching instructional dvds, watching Accu-Stat matches, attending professional events, etc. The length of time it takes some people (it can literally take years) to absorb and apply information can be vastly reduced, with some good quality instruction. BTW, imo, Dr Dave and Tom Ross's new 'Encyclopedia of Billiard Shots' is an exceptional opportunity to learn a LOT about how the CB and OB are related, and behave on the table. However, you still need to know what the accuracy and quality of your stroke is, before this vast store of application knowledge becomes easy to apply.

Great job with the first two dvds guys...looking forward to the next three!

I like to think of them as the drills that will give birth to a great solid pool game!

By the way, they aren't just something we teach. Most if not all SPF instructors actually do them as part of our regular practice routines

I try to do them each day as well. That will give me very good indication of what I need to keep an eye on for that day.

As for giving birth to a great solid pool game...It's been over a year since I attended randyg's school in Dallas, and all I can say is, that my game has turned for the better and is always improving in one way or another. I still have bad days, but nothing near what they used to be.

Thanks Scott. Tom and I are happy about all of the favorable response we have gotten so far with the first two discs. It makes it easier for us to continue to dedicate the huge amount of time it will take to finish the last three.

Thanks again. I appreciate your supportive words,
Dave

Take part in one of the classes offered by the BCA guys, to learn all about Mother Drills and SPF. I took my lesson from Scott Lee and have not regretted it for one second.

Thanks for all the input guys. I PM'd Scott and plan on trying his lessons once the finances allow it. Looking forward to it!

SPF is a grading system that allow each student to diagnose their own personal stroke. Everyone who picks up a cue has to SPF, we just allow them to grade themselves. Couple SPF with your personal video review and the learning curve is cut very short.
