Moving slate down stairs (alone)

Is it doable? Have any of you guys set up something that takes the
"BACK" work out of it? The stair case is an average 80's style ranch home from first floor to basement. No turns, railing on one side.
Pulleys? Ski's? Forget about it, get help?

Responses greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It's not something i would want to try going at alone. Calling a friend with a strong back will be alot quicker and safer than trying to rig up something and hoping everything goes right.

OK, I will reveal my up and down stairs trick. Long plastic kids tobaggan/sled and 2 guys, set the slate in the sled on edge with one guy balancing the slate and the other guiding and pulling the sled, I tie a rope to the sled for pulling. Off the truck and into the sled we go, across driveways and yards, then up or down the stairs! Works slick as Sh*t :)

Wher about in Wisconsin are you?

Thank you for the idea selftaut.
OTLB, thanks for the PM.
I am installing a second Gold Crown in my basement. AR6100.
The first one, the Gold Crown III, was very heavy with 2 people. The helper I had with my GC III came down the stairs after me. The slate was heavy for me since I had all the weight, but seemed real awkward for him leaning way over like a hunch back to hold the bottom of the slate that was on end. Three pieces. He went down second every time. When I told him about the 3 more pieces of slate that need to go down again, he seemed hesitant. I could easily have another body on location, I am hoping there is an easier way than just carrying them down.

I think the problem with finding some "other" way to do it is its not safe. When 2 people carry slate its heavy but secure and if someones going to drop it you'll have fair warning. If you try to slide it, what happens when your grip starts to slip? If you use a dolly, what happens when you get half way down and you can't hold it anymore? The answers are the same, a lot of damage, pain and maybe worse. Wait a day or so and let your batteries recharge and find someone stronger to help you. Patience is a virtue!

Good Luck!
Dave

P.S. I always thought G.C. slate was 10 times heavier than normal 9' slate. Ugh!

I like it! LOL Me personally though, if you've got two guys in the stairs supporting the weight of the slate...might as well just carry it down. ;)

Here are some pics of the "ski" I built from 1- 2x12, 2- true 2x4's, and a 2x4 block as a stopper. Ratchet straps held the slate in place. Worked REAL nice. I did need a helper to lift the slate on the ski and to help balance it while it came down the stairs.

The slate came from -4 outside into room temp. Instantly the slate started to condensate. You can see the darkness of the slate from the condensation.

No disrespect or anything, but wouldn't it have been a lot easier and quicker to just grab it with your buddy and take it down??? That straight stairway looks pretty easy. lol
