MP Cup! PacMan International Tournament

 WOW!! The pinoys were down 7-10 on a race to 11 alternate break format but they were able to come back and win 11-10.

Who would have ever thought that these previously unknown monsters would win this competition? Congratulations to ROMEO SILVANO and JORDAN LEGASPI.

Indeed! They came back from 0-4 down to tie it at 4-4, then won the last 4 in a row with the opponents on the hill.

So it was quite a match in that respect. But dreadfully slow (an average of 10 minutes per game) and a horrible stream. Makes me better appreciate some of the good streams we get to watch.

I heard they have recorded the matches and are going to upload these soon.

This tournament has proven that the Philippines has a lot of unknown monsters. Was very impressed with the team-up of Feliciano and Mapandi when they eliminated Rodney and Mika. I am going to watch that match again once they upload the recorded version. Just imagine if somehow these lesser known players manage to invade the US Open.

Wow, sounds like it was an amazing match. It's cool to finally see some of these unknown Filipino monsters in action... these guys are for real!

I read that it is Pacman's birthday tonight over there and that there will be a big party. I saw that Rodney is still there during the awarding ceremonies. I hope all the players including the foreign ones are invited to the event. The next Pacman event (10 balls championship) is going to be held February 2015.

If 20 top unknown Fillipino monsters somehow got a visa and came to the U.S on one plane, all the American players except SVB would be broke and give up gambling on pool with in two months. Johnnyt

Filipinos Legaspi and Silvano Score Epic Win Over Chang and Hsu, 11-10, Cop MP Cup 10-Ball Doubles Title

GENERAL SANTOS CITY--The Philippines' unlikeliest doubles team of Jordan Legaspi and Romeo Silvano scored an amazing 11-10 come-from-behind victory over the favored pair of Cheng Yu Hsuan and Hsu Kai Lun of Taiwan to win the prestigious MP Cup 10-Ball Doubles crown Wednesday at the SM City Mall here.

Legaspi and Silvano were sworn enemies a few weeks back when they went at each other's throats in billiards competitions in Bulacan town where Legaspi comes from. Fate and circumstance joined Legaspi and Silvano, who decided to team up in the last minute for the doubles event.

"Magkalaban talaga kami ni Romeo (Silvano) sa Bulacan pero nakita ko maganda ang tirada niya kaya siya na ang kinuha kong ka-pair sa doubles," said Legaspi, who scored his first major victory with an unlikely partner.

The favored Taiwanese pair of Hsu, ranked No. 60 in the world, and Cheng, ranked No. 87, raced to a quick 4-0 lead and were poised to snatch the crown from the locals with a 10-7 lead in the race-to-11 games finals. But the Filipinos showed poise under extreme pressure and clawed back to win the next four games.

In the 21st and final frame, Hsu scratched on the break, which allowed Silvano and Legaspi to spring their finesse and composure as the huge partisan crowd erupted in joy and applause to congratulate the new local heroes.

The young Legaspi, 25, and Silvano, 28 from Dipolog City, received the $40,000 top prize from host sportsman and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao who was simultaneously celebrating his birthday Wednesday.

The Legaspi-Silvano pair defeated the MP Cup defending champion team of Jeffrey Ignacio and Jeffrey de Luna, 9-7, in the semifinals, to earn the right to meet Hsu and Cheng.

Legaspi and Silvano's title-winning earned high respect from their peers and the crowd as they displayed world-class shot-making. With the Taiwanese ahead, 10-7, Silvano scored on a magnificent shot on the "2" ball on a three-corner bank shot to allow a clean-up but still trailed 10-8.

The Taiwanese also scratched on the 19th frame which allowed the Filipinos to clear the table for a 10-9 score. With momentum on their side, Silvano broke a perfect start, sinking the "8" ball en route to a clean-up that sent the game to the final game.

"Hindi namin ini-expect na makakaabot kami dito pero salamat sa Diyos, naiuwi natin ang korona," said Silvano. "Maraming salamat sa suporta ni Congressman Pacquiao dahil kung wala siya, hindi namin makakamit ang ganitong tsansa na maipakita namin ang kakayahan namin," said Legaspi.

Silva, Legaspi, and Faraon are three guys I'd never heard of a month ago.

After the All Japan Championships and the Pacquiao event, I sure know about them now!

The depth of the talent pool in the Philippines is simply amazing.

From sworn enemies to doubles partner

What is so amazing is that these two are battling for pool supremacy in a small Philippine town and at the last minute decided to team up for the Pacman Tournament! The first place prize ( $40,000 roughly 1.8 million pesos ) is a life changing money for both of them. Sometimes life is stranger than fiction.

Congratulations to the Silvano/Legaspi pair who won the recently concluded MP 10 ball tournament in GenSan, Philippines. The came from behind win over the Taiwanese pair was full of drama and excitement and showed the determination of these two young pool players.

Congrats on a job well done!:clapping::clapping::clapping::clapping:

Some stats on the doubles final match won 11-10 by Silvano and Legaspi (S/L) over Hsu and Cheng (H/C).

Made at least one ball on the break without fouling:
• S/L -- 5 of 10 (50%)
• H/C -- 5 of 11 (45%)

Breaker won game:
• S/L -- 6 of 10 (60%)
• H/C -- 6 of 11 (55%)

Break-and-run games:
• S/L -- 1 of 10 (10%) on all breaks; 1 of 5 (20%) on successful breaks
• H/C -- 3 of 11 (27%) on all breaks; 3 of 5 (60%) on successful breaks

Missed shots:
• S/L -- 5
• H/C -- 4

Fouls:
• S/L -- 3 (1 on a 10-ball, 1 on a missed kick, and 1 intentional to tie-up balls)
• H/C -- 4 (3 on the break and 1 on a kick)

Balls pocketed:
• S/L -- 112
• H/C -- 91

A key factor in this match was the 3 scratches on the break by H/C. These came in Games 7, 19, and 21. The game was run-out by S/L in their first inning all 3 times.

Another article. Did anyone see that shot on the 2-ball in the 18th rack that was said to be the turning point in the match? I gave up already when they were down 7-10. I thought for sure that the Taiwanese got the title in their bag already.

FILIPINO DUO CAPTURES 2ND PACQUIAO INT’L BILLIARD CROWN
DECEMBER 17, 2014 ADMIN LEAVE A COMMENT
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (December 17) – The tandem of Romeo Silvano and Jordan Legaspi twice came from behind to catch up with their Taiwanese opponents before clinching the doubles title in the US$100,000 2nd Manny Pacquiao 10-Ball International Tournament held at SM City here.

With the game on the line, Taiwanese Hsu Kai Lun scratched the cue ball on the 21st rack of the race-to-11 finals which the Filipinos took advantage for a thrilling 11-10 win.

It was the only time the Filipinos led but it was for the US$ 40,000 champions’ purse.

A dejected Cheng Yu Hsuan, who also scratched the cue ball during his break in the 19th rack, said he was depressed and blamed himself for the miscue. They were then ahead 10-8 and would have clinched the crown if they won in their break.

Hsu blankly stared on the table thinking of the opportunity that slipped their hands after Silvano closed out the match.

The Taiwanese pair raced to a 4-0 and 6-2 leads before the Filipinos knotted the match at 6-6.

They were one rack of winning the title, 10-7, but Silvano holed a difficult bank shot of the 2-ball to clean-up and won the 18th rack.

The Filipinos proceeded to win the next four racks to disappoint the pair of 26-year old Taiwanese.

Philboxing’s Dong Secuya said the turning point of the match was the magical shot of Silvano of the 2-ball in the 18th rack that nullified the safety shot of the Taiwanese.

It was a fitting triumph for Silvano and Legaspi who ousted the defending doubles titlists Jeffrey de Luna and Jeffrey Ignacio in the quarterfinals.

Legaspi was teary eyed when interviewed by reporters after their riveting finals victory.

Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, who watched the finals from the sidelines, said the tournament hosted and sponsored by Rep. Manny Pacquiao yielded many young Filipino talents in the game he made popular in the country.

“Lalo na sa Mindanao, ang daming magagaling,” Reyes said.(Specially in Mindanao, there are plenty of good billiard players)

Reyes and his partner Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante lost in the Round of 32.

But Reyes earlier crowned himself the singles champion with breathtaking 11-10 triumph over Demosthenes Pulpul in the championship match.

Rep. Pacquiao and his doubles partner Ronie Alcano reached the round of 16 but lost to Oliver Medenilla and Raymond Faraon 9-4.

Medenilla and Faraon however fell to Hsu and Cheng in the quarterfinals, 6-9.

Another article. Did anyone see that shot on the 2-ball in the 18th rack that was said to be the turning point in the match? ...

Well, I tried to see it, and I replayed it several times. At this point in the stream, everything was quite fuzzy and the video was kind of stuttering from second to second.

The situation was that Cheng played a safety on the 2-ball, leaving it a couple feet from a corner pocket. The CB was 3 or 4 feet away from the 2-ball on a pretty straight line to the 2-ball and pocket. But the 3-ball may have been partially blocking the pocket and the 9-ball may have been partially blocking the CB, because Silvano elevated a bit to shoot. When he shot, I could not see what happened to the 2-ball. It was like an apparition, but it was off the table after the shot, and Legaspi had shape on the 3-ball.

The shot occurred at about 3:10:10 on the stream video, which is still up there on the mpcupgensan website.

[Incidentally, it now appears to me, after reading the cited story and viewing other videos of the players, that the names on the picture of Legaspi and Silvano in post #174 are reversed; Legaspi is the taller of the two.]
