Multiple-Event Winners at the DCC

With the 2018 event now in the books, it's time for some more updates.

• • • DCC Event Winners -- Banks, 1-Pocket, and 9-Ball • • •

The 3 disciplines or events considered here are are the ones used to determine the All-Around Champion -- 9-Ball Banks (B), 1-Pocket (1P), and 9-Ball (9B). So I am excluding things like ring games, 14.1, and the invitational 10-ball, as well as the actual All-Around Champion. The total number of events being discussed here, therefore, is 60 (20 years x 3 per year). Francisco Bustamante -- 2013 (B), 2017 (B), 2018 (1P)
Ralf Souquet -- 2004 (9B), 2006 (9B), and 2008 (9B)
Dennis Orcollo -- 2011 (9B), 2014 (B), and 2017 (9B)

Two players have won 4 events:
Shannon Daulton -- 2000 (B), 2001 (9B), 2003 (9B), and 2015 (B)
Alex Pagulayan -- 2011 (B), 2013 (9B), 2015 (1P), and 2016 (1P)

One player has won 6 events:

• Eight players -- Bustamante, Daulton, Deuel, Orcollo, Parica, Reyes, Van Boening, and Varner -- have won titles in 2 of the 3 disciplines;

Here's a list of the Derby City Classic's All-Around Champions each year, showing how they placed in each of the 3 main (points) events. The placements for each player are for Banks first, 1-Pocket second, and 9-Ball third. A number like 18/26 means the player finished in a 9-way tie for 18th through 26th place.

1999 ... Efren Reyes -- 3, 1, 2
2000 ... Dee Adkins -- 4/5, 18/26, 2
2001 ... Shannon Daulton -- 5/6, 5/8, 1
2002 ... Jose Parica -- 7/9, 2, 7/10
2003 ... Larry Nevel -- 3/4, 2, 20/33

2004 ... Reyes -- 62/100, 1, 2
2005 ... Reyes -- 13/19, 1, 1
2006 ... Jason Miller -- 1, 2, 15/24
2007 ... Reyes -- 2, 1, 42/62
2008 ... Francisco Bustamante -- 7/8, 3, 2

2009 ... John Brumback -- 1, 10/15, 10/14
2010 ... Reyes -- 2, 20/34, 1
2011 ... Shane Van Boening -- low (lost in Round 2; did not buy back), 1, 2
2012 ... Van Boening -- 2, 1, 1
2013 ... Bustamante -- 1, 2, 6/7

2014 ... Dennis Orcollo -- 1, 4/5, 4/5
2015 ... Alex Pagulayan -- 13/20, 1, 2
2016 ... Pagulayan -- 12/19, 1, 2
2017 ... Orcollo -- 11/14, 3, 1
2018 ... Bustamante -- 4/6, 1, 14/19

So in the 20 years of the DCC, 11 different players have become All-Around Champion. Five of those 11 have won it more than once. Here's the list.

Six players have won once:
Dee Adkins -- 2000
Shannon Daulton 2001
Jose Parica -- 2002
Larry Nevel -- 2003
Jason Miller -- 2006
John Brumback -- 2009

Three players have won twice:
Shane Van Boeniing -- 2011 and 2012
Dennis Orcollo -- 2014 and 2017
Alex Pagulayan -- 2015 and 2016

One player has won three times:
Francisco Bustamante -- 2008, 2013, 2018

One player has won five times:
Efren Reyes -- 1999, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010

In four years, the All-Around Champion did not win any of the 3 events on which the award is based -- Adkins (2000), Parica (2002), Nevel (2003), and Bustamante (2008). In the other 16 years, the All-Around Champion did win at least one of the 3 primary events.

Yup, a tough pick for sure. You should give me long odds, right? But I have the impression that Shannon didn't play a whole lot for quite a few years. But now he's going to play Bonus Ball. That'll put him in prime form, right?

Halcyon daze!

Anyone know what Dee Atkins is doing these days? I have a cue with autographs from all the DCC "master of the table" winners. I'm missing Dee and Jason Miller's on this cue. Would like to get them eventually :)

Anyone who could deny the greatness of Efren surely lacks the ability to read, let alone discern statistics :grin-square:

And only 2 players were multi event winners in an event, Efern and Shane, and the only player to have two wins and a second place win, coming closest to sweeping the entire event was Shane.

The short-lived Southern Classic, held in Tunica for two years, was noteworthy because in 2012 Justin Hall won the Banks and the One-Pocket. I spoke with him during the 9-Ball event and mentioned that nobody had ever won all three events at DCC. Well, Justin got into to some serious night action the night before his early morning 9-Ball match and lost.

I don't remember if there was a Master of the Table that year.

Also, I can't recall who won the 9-Ball Ring Game at Tunica 2012.

Alex won the 10-ball over Archer. I arrived just in time to see the banks ring game won by Brandon Shuff - in fact, I and my chair fell off the stands disrupting a lot less than you would expect. I am fairly sure there was not a 9-ball ring game.

Largest span of years between big-3 event wins -- Reyes and Daulton tied at 15.

Reyes' book-ending wins were both in 1-Pocket, Daulton's both in Banks.
