anyone have any opinions about murrell cues. i see them around and they look great but don't hear a whole lot about them. i think TravD said they hit something like a gilbert. any truth to that?

merry christmas

The workmanship is top notch. great finish, inlays, points, etc....

I've heard the Gilbert comparison as well, but I've never seen a Gilbert. His "traditional" taper is "european taper", which is very stiff and grows fairly quickly. He'll make you any taper that you want however. Give Kenny a call, he is super nice to talk to and loves to talk about cues.

Nice Hitting Cue!

I got a Purpleheart SP with a Turquoise Hoppe ring for my wife last year for Xmas. It has a SS 5/16-14 joint with an Ivory ferrule and Talisman tip....excellent playing cue for sure! The fit and finish is really nice too!!

Give Kenny a call I hear he's a great guy as well ;)

I have 2 Murrell cues & his work & playability is excellent! Very under rated cuemaker.

I've played with a 6 pointed murrell for a couple of years now. It is a very nice hitting cue, medium-stiff hit. He seems to do very nice work. The only complaint is with his finish. It seems to have developed hairline cracks in it (only a couple months after I bought the cue). I believe it is due to the (CA) finish being too hard. I have not seen or played with any of his newer cues to know if he still uses the same finish or has made improvements, but either way I think his cues are a great bang for the buck.

After playing with a friends Gilbert j/b, I think that a murrell is very comparable to a gilbert in terms of hit and aesthetics. I personally give murrell a slight edge in terms of feel over gilbert.

except for his finish

THIS REMARK COULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO FORM A NEGATIVE OPINION THAT WAS WRONG FOR SEVERAL REASONS
1 there is probably not a cue maker in the nation that has not had a problem with his finish at some time or another

2 jUST WHEN THEY FIGURE IT OUT THE MANUFACTURORS of the finish send them a new batch that is slightly different and they have problrms

3 WE,pool players, are tough on cues, the cue ,my purchase was a good onestays in the trunk, the poundings during play

4 The finish doesn't last a lifetime anyway

HAVING said all that,I have never seen one of these cues except on Trav's thread, and it looked so good I made him a low offer just because it was beautiful and I wanted to see if it hit like a south west..

Instead he sold me a case so I could carry 2 cues

Just one mans opinion

how can you comment on a cue you have never seen?you comment on the finish but have never even seen one,the JP's in my avitar were made by kenny and the finish is excellent, you say you want to see if it plays like a south west, but in your forsale post you claim to have a sneaky pete that is the best cue in the world and will improve you game, what gives?

Kenny's Cues

I would say that Ken's cues are very nice...he is a fine craftsman. I had a merrywidow that played very nice...birdseye with a purpleheart handle, great balance and feel, nice taper. I would say along the lines of BCM, a bit stiffer with a little more feedback; he does great veneer and inlay work, I think in a similar tradition to Skip Weston, but I would buy a Murrell before a skip anyday.

Murrell cues

I got one of Kenny's cues a few years ago. From this one I decided to get my "Claudia" from Kenny. Now I play arround 8 months with the cue Kenny made. The finish is without any doubt great. After I played all week with my KTM cue I'm everytime impressed from his workmanship and his execution. The finish is perfect. The stack-leather-wrap is awsome. My Z?-shafts and the butt are real straight. And the weather conditions in germany are real changeable. Kenny did a perfect job on my cue and I've to say "thank you very much" again and again. He is also great to handle and tell you what problem you can get if you insist on something.

Look at some pics from my "Claudia" from KTM here:

I have a purpleheart sneaky and I love it! It has taken over as my player, which was a Downey. Don't get me wrong, I love my Downey, but my Murrell plays lights out. The finish is exceptional as well, so I wouldn't let that stop me. HAPPY HOLIDAYS

i have to agree the finish on Murrells are usually perfect with no problems.you might have had a bad cue.you definitely should be careful making a general statement about his finsh b/c i have had 3-4 and have never had one problem with his finish.i also think the BCM is a pretty good comparason.Kenny makes a very nice cue and for the money they are hard to beat.

I paint cars for a living & have discussed finish techniques with several top makers & Murrells finish is top notch. I know several cuemakers have had problems with the relatively new UV finish & it can be really frustrating! I might add in passing that Cory Barnhart & Darrin Hill are really impressive in this department & all 3 makers are very affordable for us mortals with slimmer bankrolls.

Murrell

I'll throw in my input here just because I don't really like how Kenny's cues hit. But 'the hit' of the cue is always subjective and just a matter of taste.

Now, having said that, I would also say his craftsmanship is impeccible. Really! I know for a fact that he would not let a cue out of his shop that wasn't up to his high standards. John, who runs Wolfbite Cues and is a dealer for Kenny' cues is a friend of mine. I've had the lucky opportunity to check out more than a lot of Kenny's cues and each and every one was beautifully made.

Like any cue, take one out for a test drive. See if you like how it plays or if it's just matter of a tip change or something. I know Kenny would be MORE than willing to accomidate you with those kind of changes. You will not be dissapointed by the craftsmanship.

As far as the other person having finish problems... I would absolutely contact Kenny about it. I'm positive he would stand behind his work.

Happy Holidays y'all.

what happened to Wolfbite.i used to enjoy going there to look, but he hasn't updated in 2 years.

I agree

I agree, I was really hoping to see more of Kennys work as well as some finished Tim Prince cues.

Sam,
I got a chance to see some of Kenny Murrell custom cue work, workmanship is excellent it got a very nice solid hit. His price is very fair for the work he does.
Kenny

Does Kenny (Murrell cues) have a web site

I would like to check some of his cues out I'm interested in a nice sneaky pete.

I own 4 myself...the workmanship is really sharp and he pays attention to all the little details.

Like everyone says, the hit is subjective, but I like it a lot.
