My cue design is being sold on my maker's website??

I designed and ordered a cue from Jacoby earlier in the year. I was thinking of designing another one, so after going on their website, I see there are half a dozen cues or so that look nearly identicle to mine! I wanted to order my own to use the woods I wanted, but mostly to avoid someone coming up to me to say "hey man, I have the same cue as you!" The only difference is the woods, no brass rings at the ring locations, and a slightly different forearm design. Have a look! I guess it's not the most unique design, so maybe I'm just overreacting.

well other than the big diamond in the butt I don't see much that looks the same.

Not to mention if you want a custom, 1 of 1, then I'd order a custom cue from a custom maker, and mention that you'd like it to be the only one. Some cuemakers will make duplicates of cues. In this case the cues are different in a lot of ways other than that huge diamond that has been used in other cues, by other cuemakers over the years.

From what I can see there is not a whole lot original in any of those cues. Just points and diamonds. There is not a whole lot of stuff you can do with points and diamonds someone hasn't done before.

Different forearm design, different rings, different joint. Other than that they are sort of the same.

A place I used to work at made quite a bit of money off knock off products. I had to watch a video from the legal department on how to do it legally. Boils down to changing three recognizable features and then you avoid copyright infringement. What's considered recognizable is the rub. Maybe try to think of it as an honor to be knocked off.

I suspect you will find those same diamonds in other cues they have done in the past, they are not unique. Plus the two cues don't look at all alike.

I agree with the other posters....4 diamonds in the butt, four points in the forearm w/smaller matching diamonds in the points = pretty standard cue. However, I gotta say (and I hope this makes you feel a little better) - your cue looks 1000% better than the other cue you have pictured.

There's only so much you can do as far as cue design, unless you get into some of the really intricate 4th axis stuff. Your cue is very tasteful and a nice combination of woods, diamonds and points, but it's hardly unique. I've built a couple that you'd probably think I'd coppied from it, though this is the first time I've laid eyes on it in any way. It's just that like I said originally, there's only so many combinations of simple designs you can come up with on a cue. I'm sure you'll eventually see many more cues with a similar look. I assure you the Jacoby's are honorable cuemakers and were not ripping you off in any way.

just more hot air!

I see it the same way. Most cues are basically the same: points, veneers, diamonds, dots, boxes and etc. Don't see anything out of the ordinary.

You are definitely over reacting! Nothing original about that cue. YMMV

I am sorry you feel your design is being used. It's a sickening feeling. I think maybe the point in the butt is a copy, but many here already stated correctly thatyou will find that in many other cues.

I have two custom designed Jacoby's and love them!! If they used either of the designs, I would be flattered.

Out of curiosity, have you talked to Jacoby about your concerns? Or, were you waiting on other's opinions here before doing that?

Jeff,

you may feel you "designed" your cue but the fact is that this cue "design" has been done by so many makers for such a long time probably even Jacoby....simple inlaid elongated diamonds and points......nothing new here.......next time you order a cue if you want it to be one of one, just tell the maker.....just don't be surprised at the price........

A true visionary.. be proud .. you actually were able to see the past.

Very few orginal designs out there. More in the craftmanship and the quality of parts. So many cuemakers and like others have mentioned
theres only so much that can done to a cue.
It does surprise me each year when a cuemaker pushes the limits and creates a true original design.
