A very long time ago my mom told me my father played the Masked Marvel.

It may have been Joe Procita as he came from our area.(Gloversville+Johnstown,NY)
Recently i was made aware there were many Marvels. So it figures, maybe.
Today my dad would have been 110 and i am about to be 59. You see he was 51 when i was born, so he was the real OLDZILLA. Iam just Oldzilla Jr.

So happy birthday to him, thanks for everything !

My Dad played a Masked Marvel also somewhere in NY. He would have been 101 this August. Maybe our Dad's played each other at some point. I know my Dad spent some time training for fights upstate NY. Johnnyt

Masked Marvels

I understand there was a point, in the '20s or thereabouts, when Coca-Cola actually sponsored those guys; I also came across a fictional reference to one in a Brooklyn-oriented novel set in the late '40s. What I don't get is, how could they POSSIBLY have remained anonymous? So they wore a mask; so what? That still leaves hair, height, build, playing style and choice of cue. I don't dispute that your dad played one, but I'd sure have to question that he didn't know who the guy really was. GF

I'd have to agree with George here. Even Coca-Cola doesn't have records of who the Masked Marvel players were...and they HIRED them. The names have been lost to history, so, unfortunately nothing can be verified. Heck, I WAS one the Masked Marvels...in a previous life! LOL :D

Masked Marvel

According to R. A. Dyer, "(Andrew) St. Jean also was among that stable of players contracted by the Coca-Cola Company to don masks and appear in poolrooms. They played anonymously as “Masked Marvels”as a promotional gimmick"

I'm sure a lot of the "players" knew who they were. I can only speak for NY. In the 1920' and 30's regulation pool tables were allowed in bars in NY, and that's where Coca-Cola sent a lot of the Masked Marvels. Chances of a real player being in the bar were probably slim. There was no Internet or TV that the mainstream would know what the looked like and don't think many players knew who they ALL were. Johnnyt
