My Fargorate progression

Your whole journey got me interested in in fargo rate.
I asked at the big pool hall i go to about tournaments. seems they have tourneys but they are apa. and with my health i have trouble commiting to a schedule like apa leagues.
Seems like things are def not like they were 20 years ago.
Was always a lot of local tournaments.
Less places to play pool. and apa sponsers everything.
Oh well. i don't have to have a fargo rate. just thought it would be interesting.

Every time I read your handle, I think of this song.

But when the last pool cue’s been packed away, you know that I still want to play. So just make sure you’ve got it all set to go before you come for my pool cue yo.

Oh so the video was more directed at my handle then my post. I see it now.

I broke 570 to 571!

I played in a US Open qualifier a couple weeks ago and did great. I didn't get a qualifier spot but I was in the hunt. I actually couldn't play in the US Open anyway, as I'd be on vacation in Mexico then. I entered because I wanted tough competition in a field size that would not finish at 5am.

I also won an open tournament. Completely open, by the old definition. No player skill exclusions, no handicap. Unfortunately it was not fargo rated. It was just a small weekly event with I think 12 players. Strongest was a 640. Instead of chopping the finals, my opponent and I played for it all. ha ha.

I also went to that huge calcutta tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. They had their own in-house handicap. I showed them my fargorate and they used that to make me a 5, which was the highest rating on the low side bracket. I went 2 and 2. I felt my rating was pretty fair. I wish the whole tournament went by Fargo instead of their in-house. There were def some people I know to be better than me that were rated a 3. ha ha. I loved the room. Maybe one of the best I've been at. I had a good time and I'll be back.

I haven’t really played any tournaments for the last 10+ years. Entered the WNT Helsinki Taom Maxrack Open in the beginning of August and played nicely like good ol’ times and won a few matches. After the tournament I realized the matches would probably be added to Fargo and lo and behold, I got my first Fargo rating making my rating jump from -51 to 761. Could be one of the highest jumps in Fargo history! 😂

Before the Helsinki Open, you were 699 with 98 games. It's just that the record was marked inactive and not shown. That -51 is just a meaningless number--not a rating.

So i am a little confused after playing all night with some old friends. most of them play apa leagues.
I heard them talking about fargo rate and i chimed in and asked questions.
One of them just got back from vegas from a team captains tourney.
So i was asking them how i can find local tourneys to start getting a rating and whether or not that is possible without joining apa leagues.
They said it doesnt matter because it wouldnt count towards fargorate.
That apa doesnt use fargo, they have thier own competing version.
Is this true? it would be news to me.

Thank you for the explanation 👍

Is there a way to see my own matches included in my rating?

Yes, the APA has a league-specific rating approach called Equalizer. The basic idea is stronger players win their games in fewer innings--fewer trips to the table. Though the APA league games don't go into Fargorate, many of the more serious APA players have a Fargo Rating based on other data--on tournaments and other leagues.

Ah ok, thanks for the response and clarification. all this stuff wasnt around 20 years ago

This 1000 entry 578 cap filled up in 3 days! 64 players put up a $200 non-refundable deposit. Unbelievable. I made a spreadsheet of the players (of course I did, ha ha), and there are 13 with a higher rating than me. 10 players are yet to be announced (qualifiers), and I expect those to be near the top of the ratings.

Players are from all over the country, including Hawaii and Alaska. A few from Canada as well. (assuming their location listed in FargoRate is still current)

Normally I like to go in cold to a tournament, and don't even want to know the ratings of my opponents. This time I wanted to see about where I stand in the field. I'll also check to see how much each player moves when its closer to February.

I’ll bet nobody moves much seeing if you go over 588 you will be refunded and turned away.

I think the implication is people might need to avoid competition to protect their rating from going over 588. In fact there is a decent chance if everybody just keeps performing and improving as much as they can and doing their best, all of the players will be at 588 or lower at the time of this tournament. One way to get a sense of this is to look at how these players' ratings have changed since March, a bit over 6 months ago. If these changes happened again just like this over the next 6 months, one player would be at 589 and all the rest under 588.

The average of the players is at about 560 now and so has almost 30 points leeway

I played two Salotto sets with my buddy in New Jersey who is a 592/1600. I won 10-9 and 10-8. I told him I was going to take his points from him, ha ha. We've been gambling since we were teenagers. We are 45ish now. I went from 571 to 574. He went from 592 to 591.
