My first attempt at making JP's

These are my first joint protectors. I made them to match my Frey titlist, I'm very pleased with how they turned out. I used some straight grain maple coring stock, some thin veneer from cueveneer, camel bone as an ivory substitute, and I matched the point wood as close as I could with brownheart. I had to make a veneer cutting jig, and a veneer press similar to Bob Dzuricky's, only I made mine an all in one press and cutting jig. So thank you Bob for the tutorials and pics on your sight. Also I have to thank Cris Hightower for the suggestion of camel bone for an ivory substitute. I do have to say that these things are a pain in the ass to make, and after I'm done with a set that are in the works for a break cue I made for myself, I think I'll retire from making JP's. I enjoyed making my break cue way more than these JP's. Anyway, here are the pics. there not perfect, but close. Any coments good or bad are welcome. Tom

Awesome!!!

Dude thoes are killer JPs!!!!!!! I want em!!!! Lol......
Don't retire too soon Jim Baxter need some competition.!!

hey.....great job

Very nice set of caps. They sure have that 'old Titlist feel' to them.

I think they look pretty dam good as JPs let alone a first try! Keep at it and thanks for sharing!

Letter/number stamp

those look great. I hate making JPs. What did you use to write the 1/2 on the top?

I used a 1/2" stamp set. I made a sleeve that I drop the jp in with two diameters (inside) one for the jp and one for the stamp to keep them both centered. Then I threw the stamps in a heat treat oven for about twenty minutes and burned it in the jp's. I was gonna burn the number 17 in the side of them between the points to match the original weight of my titlist, then I decided I was getting out of hand. I've got some crappy iPhone pics of some of the during process that I'll load later. Thanks for all the compliments everyone, this all started as kind of a " can I do it" project during breaks and lunches at work. Same thing with the break cue I made. I'm not happy with the finish on my break cue, so after I sand it and refinish it, I'll post pics of it with the jp's for it also. Thanks again. Tom

couple during pics

Here are a couple during pics. I thought I had more but I guess not. I've learned a few things about woodworking with these projects. The trashcan holds broken out wood just fine.

Jig

Those look nice, how did you cut your miters on the veneers?

I made a cutting jig like this one Bob has on his page http://www.dzcues.com/veneers-2.html mine doubles as a press also. When I get to work tonight I'll take some pictures and post them. Mine is made of aluminum but all the processes are basically the same as Bob uses. Cutting the point grooves I used a spin indexer set up on a 20 degree angle on a Bridgeport with a double 45 degree side cutter. The machines I used are set up for tool and die making so they are dirty and not ideal for this, but it gave me a chance to see if I want to start buying machinery for my home shop. So I'm sure these caps and the cue I made will end up costing me tens of thousands in equipment now. Lol!

my veneer jig

A couple people wanted to see the jig I made for veneers. here it is. It's just some 3/8" scrap aluminum I had laying around. It's 3 3/4" wide by a little over 12" long. the groove in the bottom piece is 2 1/2" wide and I can't remember how deep. Nothing special, but anyone is welcome to copy it.

Pressing plate with the v grooving clamps to the right.

No plates on the bottom just the groove.

This is what it would look like if pressing veneers, only I'd have hex nuts instead of wing nuts so i can get more clamping force.

Here is the set up for cutting the veneers. I use a sacrificial piece under the veneers and caculate the stack up plus .005" so I can tuck feeler stock under the clamps at the studs.
