My friend got ahold of his late Dad's Gus...

I was contacted by a good friend who came across what he was told was his late father's Gus Szamboti cue...he asked my advice on how to proceed (with a view to selling it). I'm thinking he needs to get it authenticated/appraised (by Barry?) and then offer it for sale to reputable buyers using an escrow service...the case is original to the cue (he thinks)...what does this august body think?

A little bit of background on Dad...he was no stranger to disposable income, had huge collections of high quality stuff, including rare coins, etc.; nobody cared about his cues, so my friend ended up with it after everything else got split up.

Well I would start with Barry, just invade it is not what owner thinks it is.

I am sure there is market.😁

Very cool.

I have a Schon R9 that is almost identical to that. I love the design.

What a gem! Pool history right there... Don't tell anyone. I just salivated like a hungry dawg....

If your friend is planning on selling maybe Barry sells it on his behalf. That creates the escrow and if sold from Barry then it authenticates pretty easily.

I dont know if Barry and i dont know if he would be willing, but i know other makers that sell on behalf of people. They have buyers going to them all the time. There is always a cut to them, but when someone is not in the know, and can get someone who is to do the selling it is worth the fee in my opinion.

Impossible
I would agree if the son/daughter had an interest in the game. In the past few years, I have sold some very nice cues for people who could care less about pool, they just had minimal pleasure knowing it was their father's hobby. I will face the same dilemma because my kids have zero interest in pool.

It happens, and I have learned that sentimentality only goes so far,

I guess I’m technically an orphan, you could always consider adoption!

Gus did send a lot of his cues with a Felini case. Keep the pair together. Get the Dads name as Barry may even have a record of the sale if he bought it new from Gus.

A potential $10,000 sale or so sometimes trumps sentimentality.
You never know how bad someone needs money and to them having two pieces of wood sitting in a closet makes no sense.
I just hope it doesn't drag out for a couple years like the last person trying to sell a Gus.

All the people I assisted took the money and did what was important to them. Which is exactly what you would expect. Pay bills, vacation, college.. at least it was there.
That guy doesn't want to sell, he just wants to say look at me....
