This weekend, my husband, Mike Zimmerman and I played in a $1000 added 9-ball tournament at City Lights in Tacoma. Other notable players in the event were Dan Louie, JD (John Doherty), Glenn Atwell (with new LASIK'ed eyeballs 
), Raul Abenojar, Todd Marsh, Rich Geiler, Eddie Mataya, Eddie Carrido, Don Wirtaman, and a lot of other good players for a full 64 player field.
There was also a Calcut...er I mean, player's auction, which generated another couple thousand dollars. Mike did not take half of himself, as this was the first big table tournament he has played in since the IPT, and he has been in a funk ever since. We have just been basically playing bar box 8 ball on Friday nights for the past 2 months.
Mike met JD in 5/6th and lost, then went to the B side and came back to play JD one race to 13 in the finals. They were pretty even until 9-9, when JD pulled ahead and stayed ahead. At 12-10, it looked like Mike was done in, but his exceptional safety play on the next 3 games held JD at bay to take the $1000 first prize plus the jelly from the auction winner, who received $800 on his bid of around $180.
JD won $650 plus had half of himself for another $250, so everyone did well.
As for Mrs. Zimmerman, I managed to take High Woman out of 6 or so women. I actually had a chance to get to come back on Sunday. I won my first 2 matches 7-1, 7-1 (and his only game was on a fluked in 9-ball), then met a good B player named Leroy Dorsey. I won a game to tie it 5-5, then broke and ran a good rack to get on the hill.
Now Mike always tell me to check the rack when you are winning, and especially when you are on the hill, but did I listen? NOOOOOOOO! I got a nice little slug rack and balls were all clumped near the foot spot, including the 9 ball, the one went up table, the cueball was in the middle of the table. He frams the 1 ball to nowhere, it hits a couple balls which hits the 9 ball in the cluster of other balls, it skips off 3 more balls, hovers on the lip of the pocket, then drops. I hate slop 9-ball!!!
At hill-hill, he breaks, makes a ball, but the run is difficult as the 5/7 are unmakeable. So he locks me up tight, safe on the 1. I try a Z-bank kick, barely missing the one. He takes ball in hand and makes a great diagonal 1-9 combo for the win. The one was above the middle of the table and the 9 was in the middle of the lower half...a very low percentage shot since there was about 3 feet between each ball and the ball to the pocket, and it hit nothing but net.
One shot I would like to share that I made that I liked is this one which occurred during my first match. My opponent missed the 5 which left it on the rail behind the 8, but a low percentage combo. The 9 wasn't hanging but it was close to the pocket. I was up 5-0 so I decided to take a 2-rail kick flyer at the 9, while hopefully leaving the 5 safe and the cueball up table near the 9. I felt pretty confident on the hit, if not the make...and it worked out.
