I see my old buddy and golfing partner died today, Ernie Banks 'Mr. Cub!'

We played many a round a Golf at Waveland Golf Course, only a few blocks from Wrigley Field. Ernie was a very likable guy, always smiling and full of conversation, sometimes too much! He never stopped talking from the 1st tee to the last putt!

I once beat him out of $300.00, I took his irons when he came up short! I was going out of town, I told the guys, 'Give them back to him in a few days!'

I never saw the $300.00, but he gave me a memento of that WIN, to treasure forever!

R.I.P. Ernie, catch you on the back nine Pal.

"It's a beautiful day, let's play 36!"

I was a White Sox fan as a kid but even then I had mad respect for "Mr. Cub". A true hall of famer in and out of the game. Just a beautiful man.

R.I.P.

What a GREAT player and man! Never got the chance to meet him, though he was in town often when Peoria was a minor league Cubs team. Even being a Cardinals fan I truly appreciated the way he played the game and his spirit. One of the GREATS for sure.....hope he's playing two with the other passed hall of famers on that perfect field in the sky.

RIP Ernie
My 11yr old son has one of Ernie`s baseball cards in mint condition.
He also calls him Mr. Cub (probably his favorite Cub of all time) Ernie will sadly be missed.
My thoughts & prayers goes out to his family & friends.

Hat; We used to play in the late 70's early 80's. How I received that memento is.

My sister is VP of her division for 'Aon' Corp., her office relocates offices all over the globe. IN the US one of her major contractors were 'Allied Van Lines,' Ernie was a spokes person for them for many years.

The date of the signed card was from an event held in the corporate boxes at 'Wrigley Field' for Ernie and Allied. Being that Aon was one of their biggest accounts, my sister was invited to attend the gala affair.

My sister had never met Ernie before, but knew of us being friends and playing golf together and about the story when I took his clubs. When she and her husband had a chance to speak with Ernie alone, she figured a good ice-breaker would be to mention my name and the story.

When she said to him, "Ernie, I believe you're friends with my brother, Bill Smith.' He replied, 'I don't think I know any Bill Smith!' She tells him, 'You used to play golf with him at Waveland, and he said you still owe him $300 bucks!' Naturally Ernie says, 'I don't know him and I don't owe him $300.00!'

She says, 'Wait a minute I'll give him a call!' She calls me, I get on the phone. She says, "Hey, I got friend of yours here, Ernie Banks, you want to talk to him?' [/I ] 'Sure,' Ernie gets on the phone and right away he says, 'Is this Bill Smith?' 'It's me Ernie!' He says, 'Well, I don't know you and I surely don't owe you any money!'

See, what my sister didn't know, is that on the golf course they used to call me 'Smitty!' I say to Ernie, 'Ernie, it's Smitty from Waveland, remember, I beat you out of $300.00, you didn't have it on you and I took your 'Honeycomb' irons!' He laughs out on the phone, 'Oh Smitty, how you been, I completely forgot about that!'

I said, 'Listen Ernie, 'I don't want the money, If you would, can you please sign one of your BIG cards to my daughter Erin.' And sign one to me saying. 'To Smitty you won!' and sign it also?' He said, ' Absolutely no problem!' We talked a few more minutes about old time s at Waveland, what guys were still around.

In your question of how I got the card in the middle of winter, there it is!

Anyone ever notice a common pattern among habitual braggarts, and name dropper's, when they get caught screwing up, ?..Then they have to create a page long, drawn-out story, to cover their tracks, and hope people buy it !..Thats why I never thought bragging and name dropping, was really worth all that extra grief ! :o

For example, I recently made the mistake of mentioning that I had once played pool with James Caan !..Little did I know, a member here, had been intimate friends with him since high school !..He even called him "Jimmy"...Boy, was my face red !

SJD---Anyway, RIP Mr. Banks. :sorry:

PS..BTW, did I ever tell you guys about the time me and Joe DiMaggio, did a three way orgy with Marilyn Monroe ?..The idiot married her anyway !..Sure pissed off my good buddy JFK !

This post shows the total lack of class by SJD. But it's not surprising. Marillyn Monroe? Tooth's old lady is more your style, I hear.

Sorry for your loss, Bill. Losing Ernie Banks is a big loss for millions of baseball fans, he seemed to be pure class. Condolences to his family and friends around the world.

Dave, what's up buddy, how you feeling! Some people are really petty, when they're NOT the center of attention. It was a running joke around Waveland Golf course, when I made Ernie leave his clubs, but, naturally some Jealous people from AZ, (the state) like everything else, in their lives, passed them by!

As I didn't care and Ernie had forgotten about the money years ago, it just came up in the right spot for my sister to break the ice with him at a function! That's all!

If I wanted to, I could talk about how I used to beat up on, Mike Ditka and Stan Mikita, when he was assistant-pro at, 'Kemper Lakes' Country Club! I guess I'll save those stories for a less critical few, like yourself!

Sorry for your loss and sad to hear this about Mr.Cub.....Being a Met fan since 1964 and Ernie being a Cub, well you know? he was one of the few opposing players that somehow you didn't root against as much as you wanted to, guys who played the game for the love of the game, Rest in peace Mr. Cub!
