My opinion about Earl and what he is doing to pool...

I said he was a great player, just not Earl Strickland caliber. Fact.

If ur talking about turny I would agree , for the cash I am not so sure
I think Keith's top speed matches up very well with Strickland or any one else for that matter I can only think of a few players ever who can play on the edges of the cue ball like Kieth and non of them are American ,,
I watched him play locally for several years before he quit ,, , I have watched them all and no body I have seen puts down racks like Keith when he was wheeling,

The differance is strickland could stay focused and keep his eyes on the prize,, keiths got a little blurry from time to time,,

I would love to see those 2 square off,, one thing I can assure u of is earl wont shark keith like he did shane and with all those gadgets he has on he would be open game for kieth infact I think he would want it that way,, and that would be entertaining stuff right there

Sorry if this was said earlier, I couldn't read the whole thread.

In my opinion, Earl is more like Howard Stern than anyone else in the entertainment/sports world. If you've read Howard's books or saw his movie, there was a time they interviewed people that hated what he said on the radio & him as a person but listened to the radio for hours. The main reason why they listened to Howard for so long compared to his competitors was because they wanted to hear what he would say next (they didn't want to miss anything). The "right" advertisers loved it!

It was uncomfortable for me to watch that match sometimes because I did not like the way Earl acted, but I couldn't look away. I didn't want to miss the next "big" thing. Heck, I would go nuts if I missed the magnifying glass :), and all the quotes. It was great entertainment.

Earl has done a number of things that angers me and I don't agree with...and on a public stage like Mosconi Cup, etc., but you want to see what he will do next. Just not sure if this the best thing for Earl and are we using him the wrong way? Personally, I would just like to watch him play at his top level w/o all the drama and yelling at the crowd because that is pure entertainment for me, but that does not seem like it will happen anytime soon.

your way off !!!

Getting sick of the McEnroe comparisons. McEnroe never went up and down the fans. He never belittled his opponent. He chewed out a few officials. Jimmy Connors was known as the bad boy of professional tennis. He used to kill racquets at the same rate that Earl does in cues. If you're going to make comparisons, get them right.

McEnroe used to keep saw dust in the pocket of his tennis shorts to dry his hands with and when a fan said something he didn't like he went over to the railing by the fan took a hand full and threw it in the guys face and that was on TV. If your going to say things get them right!!

Coming from you, I take that as a compliment. I like being a jerk to megalomaniacs. Thank you! :)

JAM, don't even bother defending yourself against this guy. I agree with whoever said he started off good. Attacking KM on this site is a very bad idea. Keith is a legend, and is loved by about everyone on this site. By the way JAM tell Keith hi from mark from great white and I hope to see him out playing again soon....Peace:)

Oh years ago when Keith could play, that's an amazing match. Who wouldn't watch that.
But Earl would destroy Keith today, not even close.

Hey, Charlie Sheen, last time I played Earl, it went hill-hill. Me and Earl have had a few battles. He runs five and sixes lots of times on me, and it was still close. I have a lot of respect for Earl, but I don't have much respect for you.

People like yourself is the reason why people don't want to play pool anymore. I used to enjoy playing pool, playing against all the great players, having a good time, and then to have somebody like yourself try to take that away from me? You can say what you want to about me, but you won't ever be able to take away what fun I've had in this game.

I'm not in the loop anymore -- pool loop, that is, to you. Maybe you can find something else to do with your life than to come on here and try to belittle me for your pleasure. Does that make you feel good, Buddy?

You may think just because you're a college graduate and have a job, that that makes you better than everybody else. Well, you're wrong. The funny thing about it, if you walked in the pool auditorium, there wouldn't be one guy that would know you. Isn't that nice? Somebody talking shit behind a computer, got nothing good to say, and wants to try take me down. I may be a degenerate gambler to you, but one thing I do know, the fun that I did have gambling and the memories I have today, I'm not going to let a two-dollar MF-er like you take that away from me. So have yourself a nice day, Charlie Sheen. What a winner you are. Duh!

LOL, Keith you rule my brother!! Nobody will ever take away "The Earthquakes" accomplishments! No defense needed buddy.........

Dave...You really hit the nail on the head here, imo. Earl is a LOT like Howard Stern, in so many ways...and you aptly described it to a "T"!

Good post Neil! Has your friend been diagnosed by his doctor? They know a heck of a lot more about bipolar behavior now, than they did years ago. There are two distinct types of bipolar personalities. One, takes a small daily dose of a medication like lithium, and stays "level" all the time. The other must take a cocktail of meds, that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This type of bipolar personality is prone to drastic changes (manic or depressive), and most especially if they don't take their meds. Did you know that there are literally millions of bipolar sufferers, just here in the US? Did you know that about half of bipolar sufferers also suffer from chronic migraines? Not a very fun disability to have, at all!

Apparently you haven't read many of my posts on him. Do I "excuse" him because he has the talent he has to accomplish what he has? No. However, I do give him more leeway than your average player because of that talent. This "sport" needs that kind of talent, and he sure has it!

Now, why do so many expect and demand that he act "normal" when they know that he is not "normal"? Sorry, but that is just ignorant. Earl is NOT normal. His behavior shows that he is most likely bi-polar. Always has been. It's a handicap that he has to deal with and has played stellar pool all these years in spite of it! So far, he has been the only one able to do that! For that, my hat is off to him! He not only got all those titles, he did it with a mental handicap that prevents all others with that handicap from being able to do it.

I have a friend that is bi-polar. He is just an average decent player. Will never get much better than he is because of his problem, and he knows that and has accepted it. He is the nicest guy you would want to meet. But, as soon as the pressure gets going, things dramatically change. That pressure can just be not playing to his normal speed. He won't gamble, and rarely will enter a tournament because of what happens to him.

He goes from a nice, easy going guy, to instant anger that he cannot control very well at all. He will snap a thousand dollar cue in half without thinking about it at the time! (and $1k to him is a LOT of money!) He will start yelling at everyone, throwing stuff, ect. He has learned over time that when that "switch" in his head flips, it's time to quit. Doesn't matter if he is in the middle of a game, he will guit and walk away so he doesn't have to deal with what he turns into.

Because of that, he will never be a "player", and he just tries to play for "fun". Tries to get what enjoyment he can out of the game. He doesn't HAVE to keep playing because pool is not his livelihood.

I believe Earl has the same problem. I also believe that he exerts a lot of self control over what he REALLY wants to say and do at the time that "switch" flips over. For that, I give him credit. If he were to take meds to control it, from everything I have heard about the meds, he will never be able to play at a pro level on them. He would be "nice", but never win anything. So, that route is out the window.

He has been this way for 30 years now. People have dealt with it and put up with it all this time. Now, that he is essentially 50, people want to say "enough is enough" and force him to give up the only thing he knows how to do. Just because THEY don't want to watch his antics! Who are THEY that they should have ANY control over his career???? If you don't like to watch him, then DON'T WATCH HIM!

But, more people watch him than anyone else! Not just to see a train wreck, but because he is one of the ALL TIME BEST! He doesn't act like he does because he WANTS to. He does because he can't help it! Sure, he has ticked off fans wanting autographs, and that is really a shame. But, when he is on "tilt" mode, that is bound to happen. He can't turn that switch on and off at will like "normal" people can. And, when on tilt, just like my friend, he will go off on ANYONE within range. He cannot control that hardly at all.

I'd be VERY surprised if that when he is on tilt, and he is sitting in his chair with his hands on his head, he is trying everything he can to get his head under control. Many of you act like he WANTS to act like that. He doesn't. And, I feel that all those in the stands that taunt him to see if he will go on tilt are far worse than he is. They are the same kind of people that will throw stones at a dog on a leash to watch him get mad and not be able to get them back for it.

Heck, Earl even went as far as look like a fool wearing that headgear just to try and keep things under control. And, for the most part, they really helped. He was not able to hear as much from the sadist in the crowd, and was more able to keep his head under control. Just for being willing to do THAT he gets a lot of credit from me.

So many wanted to get down on Earl for supposedly making fun of the handicapped. Well, just what do you all think he is? Do you really think his handicap is any easier to deal with than Shane's handicap? NO WAY it is
!But, because it's a "mental" handicap instead of a "physical" handicap, you (the fans) think he is fair game to mock. That's just plain WRONG!

Now, I'm not saying he never purposely sharks anyone, of course he does. They ALL do it to some extent. Even Shane was doing it by touching the rack EVERY single time, even after being asked repeatedly not to. It's part of the game, and it's not going to go away.Deal with it, or don't be a pro.

I'm NOT saying that Earl should get a free pass to act anyway he wants because of his handicap. But, everyone he plays knows he has it, so they should deal with it appropriately. Shane did a very good job of that, IMO. Others, not so much. Archer making the You-tube video that he did, in my opion, was very low class. He's going to go out of his way to upset a guy with mental problems. Yeah, that's real professional! He's going to do on PURPOSE what Earl can't help but do. You better believe that Johnny wants a ref there just so he has a very good chance of getting Earl disqualified, and thereby winning that way. Smart way to get the cash, but pretty low at the same time. Yet, I'm sure people will applaud Johnny if he can pull that off.

so competitive!

some athletes that play thier sport at the highest level hate to lose so bad that they will do anything to win. I once had an NHL player punch me in the face over a pick-up street hockey game and apologise after because he lost it when I got the ball away from him, if you listened to John Shmidt who knows earl very well he is a great person away from competition. I think he just hates to lose soooo bad that it just comes out somtimes. I was very impressed the first time I met Earl and had a chance to sit and talk to him, I have watched a lot of great players play and still believe that Earl is the best there ever was and maybe the best there ever will be.

Wow Charliescene...why do you have to be such a hater? I can't remember ANYONE, EVER on this site, bashing Keith like you have. What is to be gained by it...other than you being perceived as a troll (and perhaps banned from this site)? Yeah, you're correct...you can count the number of poolplayers who have made a lot of money playing pool on a few hands. That doesn't make any of us here love the game any less...nor admire our pool 'heros' any less. Remember what your mama taught you (hopefully)? If you don't have something nice to say, keep your damn mouth shut!

Theres a section on this site where you see LIFETIME winnings for pool professionals. Go check it out, then tell me how many people earn a decent living playing pool. But anyone with half a brain knows there's no money in pool. i guess this is news to you Neil?

Good post

They are praying for them to act up, it increases the ratings dramatically when they do. They fine them because of FCC pressure and for PR reasons.

Then they can say "See, we aren't going to put up with this", but they're secretly saying "Hell yes, another 3 point spike...."

forget about pool growing in it's current state. Right now pool is in a catch 22, or a zen riddle.

It needs an injection of capital to be a success, and it needs success to get an injection of capital.

If someone were to come along and actually advertise a series of tournaments via print, radio etc.. and get people in seats to watch it with an actual marketing campaign, you might be surprised how quickly corporate sponsorship and network interest comes along.

That's the way that ALL successful sports did it. With butts in seats. Once they got butts in seats the network and corporate sponsors were chomping at the bit to get the rights.

Pool has been going about it all bassackwards. Focus on getting seating filled at events with a proper marketing scheme and advertising and the other part will follow.

All that getting it on TV will do is showcase a lack of interest.

There are no shortcuts. The Earl's of sports are what draws interest.

Is it good for the perception of the game? probably not, but a negative perception of the game isn't what's stopping corporate sponsorship and network interest. It is the lack of a viable market to make money. Get a valid marketing scheme and showcase that there is a market and the corporate sponsorship and network interest will come.

Buying TV air time listed as Paid advertising obviously isn't the route to go.

Characters like Earl on TV will get what makes other sports popular, personal interest. You'll have people that will route against him and people that will route for him and it's the personal interest that will make people want to watch. That's one reason why the mosconi cup is so successful, personal interest.

USA'ers want to see the US win and Europeans want to see Europe win.

Jaden

Good and interesting post. Open to interpretation, but mainly factual IMO. Good job!
