There is a reason why the lemon (or spread) will never die. No one has figured out how to change human nature. The average man on the street has just as much larceny in his heart as the average pool hustler!
If he didn't he would be spreadproof (lemonproof). There will always be
the "trapper" and the "trappee". As an artform it is probably older than the oldest profession.....think Iliad and the "Trojan Horse story". Or in modern times think Lee Trevino, the best lemon golfer/gambler that ever lived!!!

Scottster -- Ask the clerk at the 7-Eleven that just got robbed if he thinks what he endured is the same as a guy who got suckered into a pool match and lost his money.

I'm guessing you're gonna get an argument. The clerk has zero reason to blame himself for the robbery. The victim of a pool scam did it voluntarily.

Difference is huge.

Yeah but gambling doesn't necessarily imply stealing by deceit.. when you go to Vegas they don't lie about the odds and the dealer doesn't play like an idiot with some fake card player so you'll bet more and get robbed.

Then again I don't gamble much.. too much risk too little reward for my income bracket. lol great thread btw

But the critical issue here is WHY is the other guy willing to bet more?

Because he thinks he has a sucker on the line.

So, if he thinks he has a sucker, and is doing everything he can to FLEECE that sucker, why would anyone get mad at someone who takes his money?

The person who takes the bait is NOT a good samaritan. When you gamble at pool, the whole POINT of the exercise is to take the other guy's money.

If he wasn't trying to steal the "shark's" money in the first place, then he wouldn't lose his own. If you insist on gambling on something that is a pure 50/50 expectation, then go flip quarters out in the parking lot, and let the grown up folks play pool!

I agree, live and learn....is it so hard to say no? Obviously by your example, you thought you had the upper hand....so you was going to do to this person what they did to you... You got suckered because they played on your greed. you seen this guy get clobbered, and wanted to join in on the fun... otherwise you wouldnt have played.

This to me is obvious, if Im wrong ok, sorry bout your bad luck, but I dont think its nessasary to start a thread about you loosing a bet.

For all I know this guy could have been playing his heart out, and when he got to you, he finaly caught a gear.. Ive had this happen, I played a guy for 6 hours before he finaly started to play, to late for him, but he did get some money back. you cant prove otherwise, so id let it go..

Cheaters often get more than they deserve. I have seen it. We do not need that either.

People who hustle, in my opinion, are no different than a quarterback throwing the game for money. It all boils down to where your heart is. Hustlers love the money. Honest gamblers, on the other hand, do it because they want to challenge their game. Those people love the game, not the money. Why is everyone blaming the victim of a hustle if all they are looking for is an honest match? I don't think Scottster is trying to put any kind of blame here. He is just disgusted with cheating. IMHO.
 
I would not blame the victim for sure. But then again I am a tournament-player that gamble for practice and excitment.

I work for a living, most pro players do the same with tournaments, endorsments and matching up honest games being a profession.

We should too, no matter the size of the bet. I love the way some of the action is being highlighted by TAR etc nowdays.

Sharks belong under water, jmho.
 
This is such a joke....so you got hustled....BIG DEAL!! Learn from it. People get hustled everyday outside of pool. Any male on here that says he has never been hustled by a girl is an outright liar. To compare getting hustled to being robbed at gun-point is idiotic. You CHOSE to play, you didnt CHOOSE to have a gun put to your head. Caveat Emptor. JMO.

I use to have a friend of mine come in the bar about a half hour afer me. He only had one arm. He lost the other to a boat propeller when we were kids.

I'd match up with him on the pool table and win game after game for $5 or $10 a game. The rest of the bar couldn't wait to play me they got to hate me so much for beating a one arm guy.

It's part of pool. It's fun. It's like stealing candy from a baby. Just don't get caught. That would be a very dark side. Johnnyt

Loading the dice is cheating, that is a sure thing, how did that person know the other persons speed? Who approached who? often times is the Victim or so called, that really is to blame...

Last night, I watched this guy challenge my friend, race to three for 5$...lol, my friend isnt feeling well and isnt shooting all that well... this new guy challenges not only him but me as well...:D I figure its just 5 bucks, my buddy will beat him and send him packing, but like I said he wasnt feeling well and it ended up bad for the other guy because he finaly caught a gear and took a couple hundred off the guy who made the bets! THEN this guy walks up to me and says he was hustled.. My friend ask for nothing, this fellow brought the game to him, now did he cheat? Ofcourse not, its always the vultures waiting on you to have a bad day then they want bragging rights..

If they loose then you know they were cheated, BS! if you dont want to loose dont play...

Everytime Im in the box, I play like im playing Efren, (for money anyhow) I dont want a spot, I want to know just how good I am, and I dont care who it is, if I didnt have the money I wouldnt play.. If I do, anyone I dont care who you are you step insdie the box its on... If I loose well I did my best, lesson learned.. I sure as hell dont go around and tell everyone I was cheated?

Buddy or not, wouldnt matter, when its on its war.

My problem with it is that it is a waste of time in a league. There isn't enough money in most leagues to make it anything more than fun and yet people try to game the system. Too stupid for me.
 
It all boils down to the fact that somebody wanted somebody else's money. The "mark" got beat because he thought he could win, underestimated the player and the game. People get hustled because they get greedy, want something they can get with little effort. Shows that you need to know who you're gambling with.
