My review of the "Double Refund" Chuck Starkey cue.

As you may remember a certain "Zen Cueist" bought a cue from Mr. Starkey from eBay. If memory recalls me right, he shot with the cue for a few days/weeks before he decided he didn't like the cue, to which Mr. Starkey refunded his money in full.
Later, Chuck relisted the cue on eBay and low and behold Mr. "Zen Cueist" bid and won the cue a second time. Having the handle replaced by a so called "Master Cuemaker" Mr. "Zen" decided he still didn't like the cue and asks for a refund yet again, to which Mr. Starkey refunded for the selling price and the cost to have the handle replaced by "Mr. Master Cuemaker"! Way above the call of duty I would say.

I received this cue today in the mail from Mr. Starkey and I must say the cue is beautiful...or at least could be. Read on.

Upon opening the box and unwrapping the cue I just fell in love with the grain of the Snake wood! One of the most unique woods you can ever imagine. The HUGE wood pin is a nice tight fit into the Tiger X shaft, I was itching to move some balls around to try out this type of joint.
Upon further inspection of the cue I noticed small dark colored imperfections in the Ivory in the trim rings and inlays, and a very noticeable "wavy-ness" in the clear in the entire butt section of the cue.
Having recently experienced similar Ivory issues due to a bad refinish of my Espiritu, I identified these imperfections as dirt in the Ivory under the clear coat finish.
Now I don't know who Mr. "Zen's", "Master Cuemaker" is/was, but the refinish on this cue is pretty bad. The finish on my Espiritu is better because at least it isn't waving at you. I say that this is the "Master Cuemakers" fault because I can not see Chuck sanding down this cue and refinishing it again for no apparent reason.
All the cosmetics aside, the cue feels, hits and plays fantastic! I did have issues with the super soft leather tip that was on the cue. But once replaced with something a little "firmer", problem solved.
I know "hit" is subjective, and I am used to and prefer a S/S joint, but I would describe the feel of a really stiff McDermott. Responsive and easily able to make the cue ball do what you intend, that may be greatly due to the Tiger X shaft.
Over all I would give this cue a playability rating as 90%, which may be biased because of my preference of stainless steel joint, shaft diameter/taper (cue is a fat 13.02 at the tip, 13.95 6 inches down from the tip and 14.80 12 inches down from the tip, I prefer a smaller taper) and weight (weighed in near 19.5oz, I prefer a lighter cue). All of this could be easily changed to the users preferences.
I would rate the overall design and execution at 75%. I'm subtracting 25% because of the dirt and finish of the cue, which I don't believe to be Mr. Starkey's fault.

All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to order a cue from Mr. Starkey, as a "hobbyist" his design and technique seems to be great. Not to mention that if for some reason you are not happy with his cues, he buys them back!:D

IMO he shouldn't have refunded the money after someone else worked on this cue, not at least before inspecting it himself. Its clearly not the work of someone bearing the lable "Master Cuemaker".

Ill post up some pictures once I find my camera.

Nice. Kudos for getting the facts the hard way and reporting the real deal to us who may have had reservations about the cue maker.

I have a new cue coming from Mr. Starky soon myself. I am getting a Sneaky Pete though.

I didn't want anything fancy, I am a sucker for a good playing Sneaky Pete.

My main reason for the order is the wooden pin he uses. I also had him put a Sniper tip on the shaft.

I am glad to hear about your feelings on the hit of the one you have, I suspect mine will be similar.

Yeah, I am not sure of the brand of tip that was on it, but it was super soft. Looked to be newish, so I filed it down a bunch to see if it would harden up any, should have seen the leather dust flying!
After seeing the tip was unusable I swapped it for a Talisman Medium and it felt TONS better.

ok.. let me make sure i have this correct....

i remember the whole other thread.. since i read the entire thing..

anyways.. somebody ordered a cue , didnt like it for what they paid so they sent it back to him for a refund, then after getting the first refund, they saw him selling the cue ALOT cheaper on ebay so they bought it figuring they liked the cheaper price the second time, then had their own cue maker do the work , then ended up sending it back for yet another refund.. PLUS what it cost for the added work... after all this, the cue was back on ebay and you bought it Sore? this same cue?

post pics.. of it.. i would like to see it :)

Back when I used to make those high dollar collectible mohair teddy bears, I was on an e-list and we used to have a couple that travelled the world, several times. They used to stop and visit for a month at a time with a member. We also used to do bi-yearly swaps all over the world....used to be great fun.

SA,
Thanks for bring this up again. (Really)
I also posted a synopsis but it was in the middle of 80+ BS posts (aka the original thread).

But the net result for me? I believe that Chuck Starkey is a stand-up guy who will do ANYTHING for a customer.

As a DIRECT RESULT of <the Original Poster> I will also be ordering a Chuck Starkey cue. Maybe we can get a couple of these circling around!

Just came home from the local PH. Walked in and a tournament was starting so I signed up. Warmed up with this cue but didn't feel quite comfortable enough to play with it in matches, so I stuck to my normal playing cue.
Afterwards however I played a few races, shot with the wife etc. using Mr. Starkey's cue. Solid hit, man I just cant get enough of it.
One guy that is a McDermott freak played with it and said he loved the hit and couldn't believe when I unscrewed it and showed him the huge wooden pin! He asked what I wanted for it, then I explained the history of the cue and told him it wasn't for sale.:)
A regular Bank Pool player was talking to me and a friend about wood grain and how red some Cocobolo looks, the figure in nice Curly and Birds Eye Maple when I called my wife over (she was shooting with the cue at the time). Apparently this fellow has never seen Snake wood before. I let him play a game with it, after which he asks what I want for it...

Chuck, there's a market for your cues if they all hit this way.:)

I was just thinking about the wooden pin joint. Joint caps?

I have a friend that uses a Panther break/jump that has the wooden pin in the shaft.
He is a tool and die guy and made a threaded cap to cover the wooden pin, in what I believe to be out of aluminium.
Its a different thread size then the one Chuck uses as we were comparing them last night.
May have to talk him into making a set for this cue.

Specs Please

How fat is the shaft at the joint? Is the wood dowel pin as fat as cues with the joint reversed ie pin in shaft? Is the hit more like a one piece cue?

Mr. Starkey or "Sore_Aintya" will have to answer some of those. Here is the description from the auction:

"the cue is made of snakewood and curly maple. it weights 19 oz. the rings are made of phonelic linen and real ivory. the inlays in the buttcap are real ivory...............the joint pin made by me is wood with 1/2 by 8 thread size and has been chemically treated to last a lifetime."

snakewood cored?

the forearm is cored with a .62 inch flat laminate. i do not know what happened at the butt. when i got the cue back it had been drilled for a weight bolt. i do not use weight bolts in my cues
