My U.S. Open

... I haven't yet seen anyone mention the worst thing about the seating. The back row of seats on one side of the non-TV four table room had about a 10 inch gap between the platform and the wall. Given that it was kind of dark back there and there was almost no room behind the chairs I'm very surprised if no one was injured. One guy did stumble into the hole with one leg and caught himself between a chair and the wall. Fortunately, he seemed ok. ....

There was a similar fall-off behind the seating in the TV room for the three non-TV tables. One guy fell off the edge and he was not OK. I'm very glad to hear that the Open will not be in the same venue next year.

Jay,

Thanks for your thoughtful posts. Many issues that seemed to be overcome by you and the rest of the team - for that you should all be commended and thanked. Too bad about the leader issue and not having the money to pay off the top 6.

Thanks,
Dave

We got checks. We'll see what happens when they hit the bank.

Jay,

Great job as usual, with all the insight you give..All it takes to run a smooth, well funded event, as you, Mark and Greg S. have many times, is to know what you are doing and recognize possible pitfalls. Being up front, and honest with people, also is a must. I will be surprised if BB ever gets a chance at another one.

Don't know if we ever discussed it or not, But shortly after I retired, I had thought about promoting a big $$$ one pocket tournament (like Tres Kane did a great job on) here in Phx. That was right before the big $25,000 "added" fiasco, that you ran so well, and you and the player's got stiffed for in Tempe.

In fact, I was trying to learn how to promote, it at that very tournament..It appears BB must have used that for his "business model" for his ensuing US Open tournaments...After the sh*t hit the fan..I was a little disillusioned, to say the least, and soon after shelved the idea. If I ever decide to try it, I will make sure to involve you, and Tres in it (possibly for his next tournament)..I have some interesting ideas, for promoting sponsors..I'm getting a little too creaky to do the leg work for it..Maybe next time you're in town, the 3 of us can get together, and kick it around..!

Dick

PS..I have an alternative method, to just writing Scott Frost a big check..

1st place...$500
2nd place...$2000
3rd place...$5000
4th place....$15,000

Well, I don't really know much about B.B. but all I've really ever seen from him over the last few years are long wind-ed statements and rationalizations to compensate for a general display of bad management of time and resources.
Taptap. Couldn't agree more with your statement.

I enjoyed watching again this year as always. Some very high level pool was played. My only issue was the stream kept freezing up every couple of minutes which is a pain to constantly refresh.

Seems like BB needs some rehab and some business management course work.

I generally don't complain about the livestreams because some of the problems are beyond their control. Some of the problems often rest with the individual's computer or their own internet connection. But that feed was freezing up more than I could stand. It is more difficult in our poolroom to "refresh" the computer than in many other situations but no need to go into the details of why that is so.

The bottom line is we had a great time watching the live stream. I may see about donating some speakers or getting some wireless device where I can hear the commentary because most of the time, the poolroom have the volume up on the other sports of the day being televised simultaneously.

had a great time...

thoroughly enjoyed the week.

I was lucky and had good seats with plenty of room, stayed at the host hotel and the service was great.

Got to see "the" bar fight live and "in person" as well as some small level matching up at the poolroom ($500 and $1000) sets. All in all a very good time.

I hope Shannon has a chance to run the tourney before it is moved out of VA to Las Vegas for 3 weeks of US Open 1pck, 10-ball, 8-ball, etc, etc... I like having something this good this close to home...

It was on your end. The stream was flawless for me. Great job by Accu-Stats.

Thanks for letting me know that your stream didn't freeze up.

When someone else mentioned the freeze problems they had, I was starting to wonder if it was more than just on my end. FWIW, other streams have frozen up on this same connection, just not as often, or maybe it was because we had so much to watch for so long of a period of time and it just seemed like there were more freeze problems than normal.

Some of the turkeys at the pool room have added games and other BS to the computer that we provided for the exclusive use of livestreaming and that may be creating some problems as well.

You mentioned a couple time at least something about the "Jay Helfert room" So what happened there as in your post your also mention that is was suppossed to be or was originally gonna be that. This leads me to believe that it something changed, did you pay BB for sponsorship of that room and then he never did it. Just wondering cos it seems you were willing to put your own $$ in to it for the seating. Hope all is well, let me know thanks

Whatever may have gone wrong at the tournament, I really enjoyed the livestream. A click on the "refresh" button solved any freezing-up problems I had.

Mark,

I think Jay was making a funny (the "Jay" room was very small)

Thanks! Maybe we can upgrade our system or connection at the pool room in the future. Glad to hear others had no freezing! Accu-Stats is and has always been top shelf.

Hey Eric, I may tend to second guess myself and say that you are correct But if thats the case why would he pay for the seating for that room out of his own pocket unless his name was attached to it somehow? Hey I may have totally got the wrong end of the stick but thats the only part that makes me feel different.

Just for the record. As of 11/8/12 guys in the top 20 still havent been paid. Just not right.

It is my understanding BB and family "own" the name US Open 9 Ball. Won't be seeing it in use anywhere else than as the title of a BB event. Hope someone has better information. If you do, please post it. Thanks.

Lyn

I really don't understand why you guys think Barry is done? The same thing has happened every year for the past decade at least. He will keep trying and doing the same as long as he's got the will to do so.

No one is going to forcefully "take" the US Open from him. Additionally, If he decides to quit on his own, no one is crazy enough to take it over.

the noticleable difference-

Well, I don't really know much about B.B. but all I've really ever seen from him over the last few years are long wind-ed statements and rationalizations to compensate for a general display of bad management of time and resources.

The U.S. Open SHOULD be a prestigious event which everyone would be proud to say that they were a part of, but I've heard so many complaints to the contrary by others... I'm really sorry that it's this way.

Thanks for your efforts, Jay and to all of those who were sober enough to put their heart into it

After 37 of these things-the formula should be established-oops-wait- it has been...:(

the scheduling was very bad.
my first match i played on day 2 at 11 am.
i won that match then played at 11 pm on the same day.

Chris,
Kind of late to the thread but, with that kind of break you could have helicoptered home, grabbed a sandwich, caught you a 4 hour nappy time with happy ending and still make it back to warm up 45 minutes prior to match time.
