Mystery cue that was sold on Ebay?

Someone must have had a pretty fair idea, or they wouldn't have bid over 900 USD on a Mystery Cue.

That's approx how far my cue ID knowledge goes.

I think that's very good detective work...or someone has too much money and few brains...or he bought his own cue to sock it to someone down the line with a $100 cue for $1000 or more. Trust no one. Johnnyt

ya from the looks of the cue and the age, id be seriously tempted to put 1000 on it, with no idea what it is

while every one was scared someone got a 1500 dollar cue for 900.

This is the best post here. I love that these threads never get created during the sniping process, only after people miss out on a supposed deal.

I didn't "miss out". I took my shot at $500. The cue could still be only a couple hundred dollar cue...you just don't know. Still didn't know if the cue was straight plus the strange mark on the forearm in the wood scared me. You don't see too many high end cues that have strange marks in the wood. I didn't think a higher end cue maker would have used the wood. I'm happy if someone got a steal, if they did.

If it was a Phillippi, they overpaid in this market. If Scruggs, probably about right with the sugar marks in the forearm. Those definitely look like Timmy's earlier maple dash rings at the joint. Neat old cue but no 'steal' here imo.

Thanks. My thoughts exactly....

I bought it for 909. I bid 1526 max and was tickled to get it under a grand.

It's an early Scruggs 78 to 79 when he first left Joss and the cues resembled Joss cues.

Only Scruggs and Bill McDaniel had maple block rings in that part of joint collar and they kept them short like dashes. Bill McDaniel learned with Scruggs and his cues came along well after this style was played out. Joss and JW were longer rectangular and centered.

I found a TS cue off Cornerstone Cues with same ivory dot pattern inlay. The stacked rings were done by Joss Black and Scruggs, but the dashes on Scruggs cues were thinner.

The joint pin has a telltale dimple at the rounded nose and the inserts are beveled uniquely on the sides.

All 3 shafts ivory ferrules and dead straight. Cue is 95 percent easy. Couple slight finish rubs in buttsleeve that buffed out well with final touch. Forearm and Cortland wrap are like new. Cue is 35 years old and looks new. Big old school 1.29" Derlin buttcap. Forearm has a couple sugar marks but it is all the sweeter.

Can't believe you guys passed on this one. It's a whale of a cue. I'm seeking confirmation on the cue ID here in the cue case forum and from the 3 potential makers. One thing for sure it's not nothing...the execution is flawless.

Cue is worth a bit more than 1500. Any retailer would seek 2800. I bought some amazing things in auctions when others passed. Cues are no different.

I don't want to be the one to bust your bubble here, but your $2800 number is simply not realistic.. If the cue had the TS logo on it you would have a $1500-$1700 maybe in this market.. Oh yea, the cue you referred to on Cornerstones website.. I used to own that cue which is the reason I bid up to $900 for your cue.. I had that Cornerstone cue listed in a very good market about 3 years ago for $1900 and it didn't sell.. That cue was perfect and it had the TS logo.. We all wish our cues were worth the big numbers, but in fact they are not.. Especially now.. You have a nice cue there if you are going to play with it.. There are a number of cue collectors that are always looking for the old Joss, Scruggs, R-Series cues and I can assure you most or all of them saw your cue on Ebay and chose not to bid any higher.. Enjoy your cue my friend.. It looks like a nice one..
