Near Perfect League Playoff match

I love this freakin' game

9-ball league, local area playoffs, bar tables at the moose lodge. They count balls, there's no push out, three foul or jump cues. As a newly promoted "9" I have to get to 75 balls pocketed, the 9-ball counts as two.

My team loses the first three matches, then puts me (a new 9) up against a veteran 6. They told me I had to hold him to less than something like 30 balls to keep the team alive.

It went something like this:

I win the lag and break dry, he has no shot and kicks at it. He hit the 1, but left it where I could make it. I ran out.

I break and run out.

I break and run out.

I break dry, he makes one or two balls, and hangs the 3. I run out.

I break dry, he kicks at the 1, hits but doesn't make it, I run out.

I break and run to the 4, and scratch in the side hitting a "Z-shot". He makes two balls and hooks himself. He kicks and leaves me banking at the 7, I run out.

I break and run to the 3. I over hit the 2, and have to play safe. He hits the ball, leaves a thin cut. I run out.

I break and run out.

Overall final score 75-4, in I think they said 6 innings.

I didn't miss a ball I shot at.

The only negatives I charge myself with are two position errors, one was a scratch, one I played safe and still won the next inning. I scratched once when forced to let the cueball move on an unfamiliar bar table.

The one safety I played wasn't a lock, but I still ran out from his response to it.

I broke and ran out 3x out of 8 racks, and ran 30 points / 27 balls / 3 full racks the first time I got to shoot.

Ok, I know it's only bar tables, but I played solid for me, so I am crowing. I got some good rolls, mostly chances he didn't get, but overall I played well.

Nice job. Your opponent must've been frustrated. He'll be thinking about that next time you play him. You'll have the mental edge on him. So did your team win?

My team actually lost the match.

They lost the first three before they even put me up. My 20-0 win put them back in it, but the 5th match our 4 had to basically play ball for ball with their 7 in order to win the match.

She played her heart out, but lost by four balls.

Just got home from another pretty good match.

This time an 8-ball league, 8-foot tables where they count balls. I am a 47 out of 48, and my opponent was a 22, about like being an APA 7 playing a 2 or 3. Each ball is one point, the 8-ball is 3 points. I have to make 47 points, she only needs 22.

I win the lag, break dry, she misses her first shot.

I run out.

I break and run out.

I break and run out.

I break dry, she made one ball. I tried unscrambling a tough, clustered rack, and missed a ball trying for a tough break out. She made one more ball, missed and I ran out.

I broke dry, she missed I ran out.

I only missed one ball in the five racks we played.

final score 50-2. (I finished the rack instead of stopping mid-rack).

Damn, thats some good shooting! Always a good feeling, especially during a playoff match. I was on the other end of it this week, not so fun.

Keep shooting well.

I once saw two 9s playing in a state tournament and one broke dry after the lag and never shot again. Then again, I have also witnessed 7s, 8s, and 9s play like they cant beat Tom Thumb. Pressure comes into play a lot and I can recount numerous times people telling their teammates to put up somone else because they couldnt handle it. One of the best things to always remember is, you have to lose before you will ever win. Kind of like you have to crawl before you walk. One thing that is a total joke about the APA or any league who does this is a sudeen death match. We once played for two day's and about 2:00 am Monday morning had to play one game to decide who got the trip to Vegas. This concept takes the number system and basically throws it out the window. I was never the one who made any decision on who played or anything but when one team has a 7 left and the other has to play a low number it is a joke.

Thanks guys, I have been playing good for me lately.

The funny thing is, tonight's 8-ball match was the 3rd "soft three pack" I've had in the past couple weeks in competition. Each time I broke dry, they missed their first shot and I ran out, and broke and ran two more.

In each case, I wasn't stopped by a miss, but by breaking dry.

I don't put a lot of racks together, so even a "soft 3" feels pretty sporty.

Split the local $20 tournament of champions last weekend, even though they moved me up to the max handicap the week before the tournament.

Played solid, had at least one B&R every set.

Sounds like your in stroke! Gotta love it when that happens. Keep shooting strong and have fun!

FINALLY beat the ghost (Random rack, tournament break, 10-ball on 4.5" pockets) a short set, 7-6. Just wanted to add it as a "goal reached" to this thread of meager, recent highlights.

I dogged a 7, an 8, a 9 and a 10. :slap: But the hill-hill out was one of the tougher outs I have faced and under a lot of (admittedly self-imposed) pressure. Right down to the 10-ball 2mm off the rail, 2" from the side pocket.

That bastard ghost just won't let up!!! He had me stuck 0-3 and 6-4. I know it's a short set, but I was tired, and I freakin' hung in there.

Peace out and back to school.

Sounds like you have been getting pretty lucky!!!

Lol. Just kidding :) Nice runs... I have yet to see anyone shoot that well in APA league, but then again, 9s in my area are few and far between! Sounds like you need to go BCA or something, play some "real" pool (I'm a 4, so the APA will have me for a while.... :)

Great shooting. I'll need the wild 8 lol on the bb. All kiding aside that is awsome shooting. Johnnyt

Thanks guys! Don't get me wrong, I NEED some rolls to be CLOSE to beating the ghost, but it still felt good.

As for league, it's not really my bag, I HATE bar pool, and 8-ball is really low on my list of favorite games.

I play because I like the competition, and ok, the free practice time while I am broke.

There are 3-4 other 9's in our APA 9-ball league, and it's a coin flip any night, short set, bucket pockets on 8' tables, but it's fun and makes you try a little.

There's a "power league" starting at my local room, 6 and above, playing on the 9' tables. I am going to try and participate even during school, just with a relaxed, heehaw focus.

Great play

Great play.

I'm just curious, how do you play when your opponent jumps out to a big lead? That seems to be one of my biggest hangups. My lack of mental fortitude is keeping me from making a big leap in my game.
