Neat Old Picture

That's when Allen won the 1983 Meucci Rivermont Open 9 Ball Championship.

It was in Memphis, Keith finished second. I was a stake horse for Keith and Louie. I think Allen got $12,500 for first and Keith got $7,500 for second. Rempe got $5,000 for third. I could be wrong. It may have only been 10K, 6K and 4K. Do you know Terry?

Jay,
There were 84 players in that tournament that year.
Allen won $15,000 for 1st
Keith took $7,500 for 2nd
Rempe took $3,800 for 3rd
And Dallas West took $3,300 for finishing 4th.

Thanks Terry. I knew we made a nice score with Keith. Louie finished in the money too. And then they played each other for 2K. That was the famous "mum" match where they weren't allowed to talk! If you talked it was a foul. Louie won that one and his parting shot to Keith was "Nice talking to you kid". :D

I played in that tournament and won my first two matches and had to play a young Earl Strickland in the third round. I thought I was primed and ready! He drilled me 11-3! I knew then that my playing career was over. :)

He doubled into the points of the corner pocket. Great job guestimating the results. Nice to have those kind of shots in your arsenal. Kim is definitely one of the all time greats.

Thanks all for the info regarding the origin of the photo. Jay, any interesting tidbits from the "mum" match? Sounds like quite a challenge, especially for Keith! Any recollection of how many "talking" fouls were called?
 
Great article. I noticed Hopkins said Sigel was the best pool player, never an underdog to anyone... with Hall being the best 9-ball player and Efren being the smartest.

I think it's fascinating how the elite players rate other elite players.

They started the match in a normal manner. They were playing Ten Ahead for the cash. The conversation got to be a little too much (God, I wish I had recorded it!). Funny as Hell, but very distracting. Finally they started talking about playing mum. It was Louie's idea and Keith went for it.

It was SOOO hard for both of them! They love to talk, and heckle each other. At first there were a few mess ups and I think maybe one or two fouls were actually called. I can remember Louie grabbing the cue ball off the table and saying "foul". After that they both played in silence for a few hours. You should of seen their faces. It was FUNNY!

Maybe Keith can chime in here. He has to remember this one. By the way they played all night before it finally ended with the famous line "Nice talking to ya".
 
Just bumping up an old thread wondering if JAM/Keith has anything to add concerning the "mum" match.

Terry did you know that or was it in the article????:grin: ;) Either way you are possibly the best pool historian ever, and your young!!! I'm proud to call you a good friend!! And I'm/were al glad to see you back here posting again.


Its a shame there is just no $$ left in pool, I thought it was bad in 85 when I started going to pro events, now days I'd like to see that $$$ NOT adjusted for inflation. I saw a poster in the mens room at a pool room recently touting $300 added(Like it was a big thing) I'm certainly not knocking it(just putting it into perspective) as its better than nothing but I remember when local events had $1000 added. Shame its came to this.


Also any referance to Kim Davenport in any thread is good in my book, he is a great freind, player, ambassador to pool!! amd a good golfer to boot. :)
