Need a piece of wood...

Hello everyone.

I have a project I am working on. it is top secret, but since no one reads the posts on this site anyway, I guess it's OK to mention it here.

Top secret project BOSs (for Brunswick Old School) is where I take a Titlist house cue and make the butt, and a pair of Tru-Balance cues and make the shafts (one of these shafts is 20 rings per inch...)

I'm sure I'm not the first one to do this, but it is proving to be challenging to say the least.

Anyway, I was hoping someone might have a piece of butt section they have removed from their Titlist conversion project, as I need to lengthen mine a few inches. I do not want to cut it down and add a handle under the wrap; I want to keep it a full-splice of course. The handle as it is is long enough to go completely through the grip area of the cue, so I just need something for the butt sleeve to be made of (although it won't be a sleeve, but rather a solid piece tenoned on like in my first cue).

So, with so many makers and so many Titlist conversions out there, someone must have something lying around for me.

PS it is rosewood I beleive. It DOES NOT match the wood (which I beleive to be mahogany) of the two Tru-Balance 'donor' cues either. Does not look to be Cocobolo either.

Thanks in advance to everyone! PM or post here if you like.

need a piece of wood

A picture of the wood would help :) and also the length you need. Or you can donate the front if it matches my butt piece :)

I am always agreeable with helping new cuemakers. I need to ask....how much experience in cuemaking or repair have you had & what equipment do you have?...JER

I also may be able to help, I have done a lot of conversions and I have many extra sections laying around that may match what you are looking for. However, you will need to post clear photo's of the wood you are trying to match, also the length you need will be helpful!!

First of all, thanks to everyone for their replies!

Yes, I should have posted a picture (I have one now) but honestly I don't know how well you will be able to nail this down from the picture. So, I included the two donor Tru-Balance cues for reference, and I used a white background.

This way, you can white balance your monitor and see a truer color rendition.

As to the length, I need about a 6" section. That will give me plenty to clean up the ends and make my tenons.

Experience? Not a lot. This is my first cue: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=142158

And this is my second: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=153191

I am also working on a cue for Mr Dieckman to donate- I'm going to use one of the butts from a tru-balance and add a butterfly splice to increase the length.

Equipment? I have what I need to do what I want to do for now. The lathe I use is long enough to do my long butt tapers, and the small detail work I do on the Hardinge. I want to get my shop up and running in my new home, but that process is going quite slow (three months and still no closing date).

Forgot to mention-

The top cue is the one I'm trying to match. The other two cues match each other fairly closely (better than the picture indicates)- definitely the same species, which, from the open grain and color, I believe to be Mahogany; I could be wrong as these are coated and quite old! The titlist is definitely more 'red' in color than the Tru-Balance cues.

I am thinking I should sand the finish off the Titlist and then take another picture...

Since the added butt sleeve won't be a perfect match to the rest of the handle, I would suggest using a wood that accents the cue nicely. E.g., a nice piece of birdseye followed by a black Hoppe style butt cap. Either way, have fun with your project. :)

I had considered that; actually ebony with a full size Delrin butt cap, since I have a nice piece left over from cue #2. There is not quite enough (Rosewood?) material to make an upper and lower band with ebony in the middle as I would like to do it...

If I can get the scrap I need I may do ebony windows with a maple veneer around them... Maybe. I am also looking for veneer colors that closely match the colors in the Titlist points for ring work, and if I get enough, I could border the butt windows with all the colors. THAT would be dead sexy...

Thanks for the suggestion!

Here's a bump as I have not received any definite answers from anyone yet if they have a close-matching scrap based on the photo above.

Please let me know so I can get my length sorted and begin tapering this to my specs.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I got a 5" piece from Prathers that looks like it will work nicely!
