Need collet for thinner shafts

Great idea...... never thought of it.........
it IS a very good idea
make sure you get the good stiff stuff though
i tried the same with soft surgical tubing once
it "gave" too much with tool pressure
note the ONCE

I just picked up a whole foot of the tubing from Lowes for a whopping 98 cents (including tax). I got the reinforced tubing. Just tested it out and it is ideal and should work great. Prior I was using the blue painter tape with some existing collets if needed. Doesn't happen often of course.:cool::cool:

collet

I use flexible hosing about and inch and a half long. I make a slice lengthwise so it will expand to the width of the shaft. Available at ACE Hardware, inexpensive and they have various sizes. Just experiment with it.

most of the collets i have bought are not centered ,difference in lathe to lathe . so you have to bore it in your chuck. i was not able to get it smoth enuff to keep from marking the shaft and you had to chuck it up very tight.
now for just tip work i only use tape without any overlap . its as true as the shaft and the chuck can be. leaves only a little residue that is easly removed.

just the opinion of a rookie.

I think I've seen the clear plastic tubing at the hardware shop, and pretty sure it comes in a few
different diameters. Maybe at the gardening supply, for small pond pumps.
Thanks for the tip, Slip.
