I'm sure this thread has been posted a lot but i figure its the best place to look for advice. i've been playing pool for a little bit over a year ago and i just joined my first league. i'm currently playing with a players cue and i'm looking to upgrade to a new cue, but there are very few local places i can go to try out cues to see what i like. If anyone could help point out some cues to check out i would greatly appreciate it.

there is an awesome Bob Frey sneaky pete in the for sale section for 275.

if you can pick up a bob frey sneaky pete for 275 you should jump on it, he worked under timmy scruggs and many of the scruggs sneakys from the 90's were made by bob if Im not mistaken. Frey sneaky=scruggs sneaky

I would Start here http://www.crowncues.biz/new.html#play the best bang for your money!!
Welcome to the AZ Fourm-Trash Attack

Nice looking cues, but unless I'm mistaken, there isn't a single playing cue that's < $300

Given your budget, I'd personally recommend Fury Cues.

www.fury-cues.com.

Have a look at their NR series. Fantastic value for money. Definitely a step up from Players cues and very appropriate for a 1 year+ player (or more). There are some professionals playing with factory standard NR cues.

Also want to mention (but I'm sure know this already) - invest in a good cue tip. That's probably the most important part of the cue; the rest is just aesthetics.

Crown Cues price have increase [which I don't blame them] August 2009 they have a 15% Discount on their cues. As with most Cuemakers or Cue Dealers, it best if you talk with them personal. What that saying - You Snooze, You Lose!!! Since 2006 their[Crown Cues] cues have steady increase in value. I remember when their cues was on Ebay auction. Going for under $150.00.

Barnhart

A couple more dollars ($395), you can get the Barnhart sneaky with 2 shafts for sale in the for sale forum. Cory does great work, his shafts are sick, and you get two of them in that deal. Each shaft is normally $150, each, so this is a great deal!

i've got a nice Plane Jane mezz i'll let go of for that price
http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=156934
comes with a mezz extension for those hard to reach shots (check out the pics and you'll see what i mean)

the (low deflection WD700) shaft alone costs 170 and the extension kit (bumper+extension) costs 80 which means you'd be paying 50 bucks for the cue itself

let me know

I found a local cuemaker (rich smithlan) that I'm meeting with next week to check out what he has avilable. Hopefully he has something I like that will be near my budget. Anyone shot with one of his cues before?

never heard of him. since he's you're local guy there's a good chance you'll be able to find someone locally that has one. ask 'em if they'll let you hit a few balls with 'em

I've only spoken to him through emails but he said that I could stop by his shop pretty much anytime to try the cues out.

Are you primarily looking for customs or are okay with production cues? There are many sneaky petes in your price range, one that I would recommend is an Al Romero sneaky pete if one pops up. They are strong player cues. I've seen maybe three pop up within the past 9 months in the for sale section, all within your price range I believe. The Bob Frey sneaky pete sounds like a good one. Those are all customs.

If you're looking for something with aged wood and/or is fancier, then there are many production cues that are within that price range.

Best thing to do IMHO is to try as many cues as you can from different makers and brands, that is how I found my favorite cues.

Fury, Lucasi, Viking, Mcdermott are brands that I can think of off the top of my head. Perhaps some of the people on your league have some of these or others in your price range you can hit a few balls with. It is certainly best to try out several brands to determine your personal preferences.

mcdermott, made in the usa, 3/8 10 pin....lifetime warranty... to include warpage as long as you buy it new and from an authorized dealer... and they start at around 150 and go as high as you want to spend. personally for a new player and for league night... i think this is right up your alley.

I met with smithlin and the cues play great. The cue I'm picking up is a little bit out of my price range but knowing I'm going to like how the cue shoots definately makes it worth it.

I remember seeing several threads on AZB discussing that not all McDermott cues are covered under their warranty because some are made in China. If that's the case, you'll need to research which ones are covered and which ones are not, then decide from there.

I'm pretty sure that the ones made in china use the star branding.
