I need some help in determining the appropriate purchase price for a 97-32 "Crown Jewel" or "King James" cue that someone locally is trying to sell. I have consulted with a few players that have seen it with me, and I greatly respect thier opinions, but I'd like to open it up to a much wider and more diverse group here at AZ. If you know this cue, you know it is a production cue that has an MSRP new with two black dot shafts of $2240. It can be purchased new from Meucci's main distributer for 20% off that price with your choice of a cue accessory of about a $30- value + free shipping. Needless to say, this is not a new cue.
It is a cue that has been played with, has only one black dot shaft that wobbles when you roll it (Butt is straight), there appears to be a hairline de-lamination near the ferrule and much further down the shaft towards the ringwork. It also has a small dent in the shaft. The tip has been replaced and there is some mushrooming of the LePro tip. When you hit moderately hard with it, sometimes you can hear/feel a buzzing sensation as if the ferrule was cracked.
The butt has a dent towards the bottom of the urethane coated wrap and there is also an imperfection in the wrap towards the forearm, as if there is a thread overlapping another one under the urethane coating, but looking at it, that doesn't appear to be the case. There is some very slight chipping at the bottom corner of the butt as well.
It is truly a beautiful design and only because it is used, would I consider purchasing a cue like this and actually using it as my main playing cue. I would also have to purchase a new second shaft from Meucci as a back up, so that is a factor in considering the total I would offer for this transaction.
I currently own a 97-28 Cameo inlay that I bought new 10 years ago, I know some people don't care for Meuccis, but I look at them as works of art, even though they are production cues and I do like the way my red dot shafts hit.
The guy is asking $1300- for it, but I think we all know he is way out of line, you can't blame him for trying. What do you think an informed buyer should pay for it based on my description? Thanx.
