I need some help in determining the appropriate purchase price for a 97-32 "Crown Jewel" or "King James" cue that someone locally is trying to sell. I have consulted with a few players that have seen it with me, and I greatly respect thier opinions, but I'd like to open it up to a much wider and more diverse group here at AZ. If you know this cue, you know it is a production cue that has an MSRP new with two black dot shafts of $2240. It can be purchased new from Meucci's main distributer for 20% off that price with your choice of a cue accessory of about a $30- value + free shipping. Needless to say, this is not a new cue.
It is a cue that has been played with, has only one black dot shaft that wobbles when you roll it (Butt is straight), there appears to be a hairline de-lamination near the ferrule and much further down the shaft towards the ringwork. It also has a small dent in the shaft. The tip has been replaced and there is some mushrooming of the LePro tip. When you hit moderately hard with it, sometimes you can hear/feel a buzzing sensation as if the ferrule was cracked.
The butt has a dent towards the bottom of the urethane coated wrap and there is also an imperfection in the wrap towards the forearm, as if there is a thread overlapping another one under the urethane coating, but looking at it, that doesn't appear to be the case. There is some very slight chipping at the bottom corner of the butt as well.
It is truly a beautiful design and only because it is used, would I consider purchasing a cue like this and actually using it as my main playing cue. I would also have to purchase a new second shaft from Meucci as a back up, so that is a factor in considering the total I would offer for this transaction.
I currently own a 97-28 Cameo inlay that I bought new 10 years ago, I know some people don't care for Meuccis, but I look at them as works of art, even though they are production cues and I do like the way my red dot shafts hit.
The guy is asking $1300- for it, but I think we all know he is way out of line, you can't blame him for trying. What do you think an informed buyer should pay for it based on my description? Thanx.

For what its worth to you I've found that production cues are selling for 1/2 their value @ 98% to 90% condition. If its got a bunch of wear as you have mentioned the value goes down from there. I've got a 1996 Viking that sold new for $2000 and I can't sell now for $750. and its still new!! In all honesty he probably won't get more that $500 out of it unless he gets lucky. jmo Don

Please don't take my opinion as gospel. It may well be worth $1300 if it was refinished. You might look around to find out what it would cost to fix everything and make an offer based on the difference. After all I know what its like to want a certain cue so if your happy its a good deal right?

To Be honest I have seen them in the pool rooms sell as cheap as 400 and as high as 800 with two shaft and really clean. Don't know if that helps, but is what I have seen. Remember the black dot shafts go both ways. Some like but, but most hate them.

Right you are, and I do want it. But if I can't buy it right, I won't do it. I really don't need it and I really shouldn't be spending the money. As it is, it'll have to be flying under the RADAR as far as the wife is concerned, I'm sure lots of you out there know where I'm coming from.

Thanks Sun,
That's about what I was thinking. That was also what some of my friends thought.
I always wanted to try the black dot shaft, and I felt that when I played with it, it was, as I heard it described, too "whippy" for me. I didn't particularly care for it. I would def invest in a new red dot shaft or 2 if I buy it. He has already passed on my offer, but I'm sure after a few weeks, he may reconsider.

If you "pull the trigger" or if the seller finally realize he don't have a golden cue and takes your offer on the Meucci Contact Mike Erwin of Erwin cues. He was at Meucci during the halcyon day and can build you a vintage Meucci shaft with matching ring work for about 90.00

I would say start with the cue in very good, lightly played condition at around $1000-1200.

Make deductions from there:

-Needs refinish..$125-150 cost
-Needs new shaft...$125-150 cost

Value: IMO, $700-900

Just my opinion...that and $10 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Just my opinion, but $1300 for a less than perfect version with one shaft is way out of line.

I have one of these cues in ivory, but had looked at the current version many times. They almost never bring $1000 new on ebay. All this despite the $2200 list price

Hold out for a better deal on the same model. It WILL come available on the secondary market. I see about 2 a year and always watch the auctions. I say $1300 is a pipe dream for a modern version with a wobble. If you buy it, you'll be buried in it after the cost of fixing and adding a second shaft.

Thanks Drawman.
I appreciate your insight, and as you say, you see at least 2 appear/year watching auctions, etc. I am very patient and can wait for my deal. I am not obsessed with this stick, but I do think it's a great looking and classy cue, and would love to have it to play with on a regular basis if I can buy it right.
I would love to see pictures of yours in Ivory if you wouldn't mind sending some hi-rez pics to me.

send an e-mail address and I will send you the goods.

Note the hand carved crown and filler in the pocket. This kind of work had to be so tedious, carving a pocket for a 1 off inlay.

I used to swear by meucci until I played with a number of other cues. Now I will not even consider one. Unless it's one of the old originals.

I had a Power Piston 4 with 2 Black dot shaft almost new and a 314 shaft. I played clost to 1000 for it. I sold it for a disheartening $350 and that was after posting it numerous times on ebay and around the local seen. I finally unloaded it just so I could buy a Pechauer.

In all honesty like the OP said. take the retail cut that in half. that's basically the new price. that slashed that in half again. then in your case you need to make deductions for all the problems with the cue.

I think $500 would be as much as he gets for it. but, I wouldn't pay more than $350.

Not to Mention if you like the Red Dot Shaft you are going to hate the Black Dot. Only found a few players that like it. and most of them use $100 cues.

If you like the cue enough either hold out and find one in much better shape. OR buy one new. at least you know what your getting. Unless you can get it cheap enough. but $1300 Guy must be doing some funny stuff in the back when your not looking. Because he's HIGH!

Thanks for weighing in Soulcoma, I totally agree with your thinking on this and especially like your # on what you'd pay for it. Too bad I wasn't buying it from you. But I did offer him a nickel for it and I will stand by my word. If he somehow gets lucky and gets more than that for it, so be it, it's not the end of the world. I'll wait for my deal, I'm sure in time it'll come around. He has already listed it twice on both eBay & craigslist with no results, dropping the price (still too high, or dropping the starting bid, which is still too high for me to even consider throwing a bid out on it yet).
If, on the other hand, I do get it, what do you think is the best shaft to use as a second or primary shaft (that won't break the bank) to the red dot I will have to get to keep it a whole original & functional Meucci? I was considering a black & a red dot for it, but after reading some other feedback along with yours, I don't think it's still a consideration (unless Meucci is willing to fix the one it has for free like I heard they might).
BTW, great avatar. The wife saw it and was grilling me about "who's the broad?" :slap:

I agree...my wife walks by and sees these trashy avatars and asks if this is some sort of porn site. I tell her it is just a lot of pool players......
