Need some advice about Master Chalk!

Hi guys I'm new to the forums and to looking at pool stuff online so please bare with me if I'm being a noob! I recently bought a gross of Masters Chalk off eBay and it doesn't have a flag on it and Illinois is abbreviated to ILL instead of IL like on my previous pieces. What I wanted to know was is this legit Masters Chalk?

Yet again I'd like to apologize if I have asked a silly question and I look forward to learning from the forum!

Manny

The flag issue is a non-issue, as Master chalk is also produced without a flag. But the ILL doesnt sound right to me....

Post a pic of some if you can, otherwise, I'd contact Tweeten with a photo and ask them directly.

Welcome

Welcome to the forum. You received real Masters chalk. It may be a bit older than the current version with the flag on it or it may have been manufactured for another country. It'll work just like the stuff with the flag on it. Some people around here call it "pre-flag" and charge a premium for it.

Yes, you bought pre-flag Masters chalk. The flag was added after 9/11, so you have a gross of vintage chalk that is at least 11 years old. I checked my chalk stash, and pre-flag some have ILL and some IL.

Some people believe pre-flag chalk stays on the tip longer and works better than the current formulation. You can search the forum for debates about pre-flag.

How can I post a picture of it? I've just had a look at some of the sale prices of it and I'm surprised I got a really good deal!

An easy way to post a picture, is to upload pics to a photo sharing site first (like photobucket.com) and then add a link to the pic in your post...

You will not be able to post a pic until you have 5 or 6 posts, at least I think that's the number you need. So you can just make some comments about other stuff and get your post count up.

Damn good question, Manny, and it looks like you got some good answers.
Welcome to the forum, by-the-way.

Thanks so much for all the advice I've been doing my reading into it, seems like I got lucky with the gross I received!

FYI the ones without flag are still being made for other countries (doesn't make much sense marketing-wise to sell chalk with a big american flag on it in all countries).

So what you got might be missing the flag cuz it's old (pre-flag), or might be because it was slated to be shipped to another country (no flag). More likely the second one.

dude, PLAY with them. see how it applies on the tip and see how the cue ball spins. if they PLAY well, does it matter if it's legit or not?

I didn't know about the second one but I doubt it was taken off because it was shipped to the UK!

I have played with it a considerable amount but was just intrigued about what I had bought. And isn't spin etc imparted by the tip, where you strike it etc? Chalk just acts a friction accelerator right?

There's a lot of BS surrounding pre-flag masters and chalk in general,
I can save you a little time here if you're genuinely curious.

• There's a myth that pre-flag masters grips better because it contains lead,
which was later removed for safety reasons. This is mostly false. There was lead in the green
and sky blue versions. The other colors didn't have it.

Sky blue is not the same as the normal blue we're all familiar with.
That color never had lead and the formula hasn't changed.
This info is straight from the vice president of the company that makes it.

• To my knowledge no scientific test has proven chalk spins the ball more.
But it does let you hit further away from the center without a miscue, and further from center = more spin.
Even if certain brands DID spin the ball more, ask yourself if you want to change your game
to adjust for the chalk's changed spin... and if you do get used to it,
ask yourself if you want to rely on a certain brand just to be able to play normally.

Don't get conned... miscues are more about poor chalking habits and bad cuing
than about which brand of chalk you use.

The abbreviation for Illinois is sometimes ILL and IL. The proper is IL but ILL is used just as Florida is properly FL and often FLA is used instead.

What about putting chalk in the refridgerator?

I read somewhere that it made the chalk grip the tip better & stay on longer.
