It wasn't Julians. According to wikipedia, filming was at McGirrs, Ames and a townhouse on East 82nd for the Kentucky Derby road trip match.

About the road trip match in Kentucky: just not too long ago someone had some behind the scenes photos for sale from production of "The Hustler" and I seem to recall that one of the photos showed Finley's downstairs billiard room was a set not an actual townhouse.

I don't think The Hustler had many real player cameos, but Color Of Money had quite a few. Was Mosconi the only real player to appear in the move?

Color Of Money had quite a list, aside from Keith. Grady, Howard, Miz, bunch of others.

The movie was going to use the title, "Stroke of Luck" as they thought Hustler was too much of a negative at that time. Oh, and when they went to the Race Track, one of the horses announced over the speaker was none other than Stroke of Luck

Piper Laurie didn't act in a movie again for 15 years. She wanted to raise her child. She still acted on TV shows and such, but no movies as they were too much of a time commitment and too much travelling. I saw her in an episode of Law and Order SVU a few years back. She was quite terrifying in that episode and when I read the credits I saw the name Piper Laurie, and would never had recognized her, but the voice was pretty much the same. Should have figured it out just on that one. She played an evil foster parent.

Funny thing about the name, I went into a movie rental place (not just a movie rental place but a local non-Blockbuster one to date how long ago this was LOL) and asked if they had "The Hustler". Reply was "we don't carry those types of movies" LOL :eek:

1. The scene where Paul Newman arrives in NYC and enters Ames was actually shot in Ames.
I know because I visited Ames before and after the movie, "The Hustler", made its appearance.

2. There were a few NYC pool players and poolroom regulars sitting around watching Fast Eddie play Fats in the movie. One that comes to mind is "Tommy The Hat", who is sitting in the crowd wearing a black hat. Tommy was the late night houseman at Paddy's 7-11 around that time.

3. The idea of showing an African-American woman uncovering the table as Ames opens for business was copied by observing that actually taking place at McGirrs, which was more upscale than Ames. Besides, Ames was open 24 hours a day, as I recall, so the tables were rarely covered.

4. The equipment was all Brunswick, probably GC # I. I think they used the old Brunswick balls in the movie, not Centennials.

5. All the shots were set up by Willie Mosconi and he expressed displeasure that trick shots and masse' shots were shown because those shots were rarely, if ever, actually seen in straight pool. However, when the movie became a hit, Willie's opinion changed. He realized that the general public loved seeing those types of shots. A real game of straight pool in the movie would have been boring.

6. Willie did not like the image of gambling in pool being glamorized and highlighted in the movie, but the pay that he received as Technical Advisor was sufficient to make him agree to "hold the stakes, Willie".

7. Walter Tevis had said many times that the character of Minnesota Fats was created purely out of his own imagination and was not based on any real individual person.

8. The scene where Eddie and Sarah meet, the Greyhound Bus Station, Sarah's apartment, the grocery store, the restaurant scene, etc. were all shot in NYC.

From what I understand, several alternative titles were considered and it wasnt until after the movie was shown to preview audiences that the title was changed to The Hustler.

The screeners took issue with the current title, claiming that it made the movie sound a whole lot more unsavory than it really was.

The title they didn't like: " Sin of Angels"

Oh, I'm sure there were several "titles" bounced around. I would think the original working title would have been The Hustler though, and not changed to it? But, I don't know that as fact ;)

The Hustler is a great movie. The pool aspect is almost irrelevant.

True. Pool aside, it was a great screenplay and the photography, direction, and acting were terrific. George C. Scott gave a bravura performance.

" When Fast Eddie prepares for his first matchup against Minnesota Fats, his manager sits down in front of a poster depicting Willie Mosconi, 14-time world champion in billiards from 1941 to 1957. About ten minutes later, Willie himself makes a cameo as the guy who holds onto the bet money. His character name is also Willie.
All the pool shots in the movie are performed by the actors themselves ('Newman, Paul' and 'Gleason, Jackie' ) except one: the masse shot (cue ball sends two object balls into the same pocket), performed by Willie Mosconi.
Fast Eddie is from Oakland, California.
Filmed on location at Julian's Poolroom on East 14th Street in Manhattan. Today, the establishment is known as Julian's Famous Poolroom.
Cliff Robertson lost the role that went to 'Paul Newman' , Jack Lemmon having already declined the part. "

I was told that those scenes were shot on location at Ames, not Julian's.

McGirrs and Ames were where most filming took place. Julian's original building was torn down around '80 and they moved across the street to the Palladium until about '90. It was torn down in '97 and a new building, still called Palladium, was built as a NYU dorm. The Eddie-Fats scenes were done at Ames.
