I've always thought Orvis said "Sweeping up at McGirrs".
I'm with you Pushout. The line was, "Last time I saw you, you were sweeping up at McGirrs."

It wasn't Julians. According to wikipedia, filming was at McGirrs, Ames and a townhouse on East 82nd for the Kentucky Derby road trip match.

.
I think "White tavern whiskey" was no more than apple juice for Fat's hustle. The glass
and some ice were key words the for Preacher to go fetch G.C. Scott for stake money.

I don't have a recording of the excellent Rothman/Fox Legacy intro, but here's TCM's brief (< 2-minutes) intro for the film; it references Gleason's role:

And here's Paul Newman talking about playing Fast Eddie:

The movie was going to use the title, "Stroke of Luck" as they thought Hustler was too much of a negative at that time. Oh, and when they went to the Race Track, one of the horses announced over the speaker was none other than Stroke of Luck
Funny thing about the name, I went into a movie rental place (not just a movie rental place but a local non-Blockbuster one to date how long ago this was LOL) and asked if they had "The Hustler". Reply was "we don't carry those types of movies" LOL
The key words were "Get it at Johnny's".

From what I understand, several alternative titles were considered and it wasnt until after the movie was shown to preview audiences that the title was changed to The Hustler.
The screeners took issue with the current title, claiming that it made the movie sound a whole lot more unsavory than it really was.
The title they didn't like: " Sin of Angels"

The Hustler is a great movie. The pool aspect is almost irrelevant.
I was told that those scenes were shot on location at Ames, not Julian's." When Fast Eddie prepares for his first matchup against Minnesota Fats, his manager sits down in front of a poster depicting Willie Mosconi, 14-time world champion in billiards from 1941 to 1957. About ten minutes later, Willie himself makes a cameo as the guy who holds onto the bet money. His character name is also Willie.
All the pool shots in the movie are performed by the actors themselves ('Newman, Paul' and 'Gleason, Jackie' ) except one: the masse shot (cue ball sends two object balls into the same pocket), performed by Willie Mosconi.
Fast Eddie is from Oakland, California.
Filmed on location at Julian's Poolroom on East 14th Street in Manhattan. Today, the establishment is known as Julian's Famous Poolroom.
Cliff Robertson lost the role that went to 'Paul Newman' , Jack Lemmon having already declined the part. "

McGirrs and Ames were where most filming took place. Julian's original building was torn down around '80 and they moved across the street to the Palladium until about '90. It was torn down in '97 and a new building, still called Palladium, was built as a NYU dorm. The Eddie-Fats scenes were done at Ames." Not sure exactly when Julian's moved into the Palladium building. Old site was torn down early '80's.https://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress....-hall-and-automat-share-space-on-14th-street/ After this building was torn down the poolroom moved across street to Palladium building.
