Need Tip Suggestions

I think tips are highly subjective; what works (and feels good) for one person, might be terrible for another. I find it interesting, however, that a lot of tips say "just as good as Moori Medium!" A lot of those tips are cheaper, price-wise, than the Moori, but obviously a lot of people like the Moori Medium if so many competitors make the claim of "just as good as".

Truth be told, I haven't played with a Moori Medium...yet. My McDermott I-2 shaft comes with one, and I'm waiting for that to arrive any day now. Should be interesting, and I'm looking forward to it. I've been playing with the Triangle medium hard tip that came on the stock shaft for my McDermott M2-9A "Knight" Elite-series cue, and I like it, but I definitely want to try some others. I figure since I'll be playing with the I-2 shaft, I can try some other tips on the stock shaft and see how I like them (or not.) McDermott will put a new triangle tip on the stock shaft for free every 6 months (all I have to pay is s/h), so I can play with doing my own tip changes as well. (Obviously, I'm going to be careful; I have a couple old crappy shafts from no-name cues I had as a teenager, and I'm buying some el-cheapo tips so I can practice changing them myself, before I go and do it to my nice McDermott shaft.) :embarrassed2:

Snipers are great.... they last for a very long time! I thought I heard they are comparable to the moori med but I will let others accurately make that claim.

I just use sandpaper to rough up the tip every now and then and it never seems to mushroom or loose shape....its the way to go IMO but everybody has different tastes...you might want to play with a sniper equipped cue before jumping on the bandwagon

Funny you mentioned this. I have had 3 Snipers and would put them way ahead of Moori Med. The Moori's I had always glazed up and constantly needed scuffing.

But my most recent Sniper seems to be suffering the same thing. Anyone know if Sniper has had any bad batches? I played yesterday and miscued 4 times that's more more then I usually do when playing!

i ordered a box of Silver Cup chalk to do a little experimenting!

I figured for $5 for 12 i would gamble on that rather than spend like $20 to have another tip put on. And if it still ends up happening i will swap the tip out and still have a box of my own chalk to play with.

I went with the tan color as well this way it doesnt discolor my shaft and ferrule as bad.

Steve

I will update my findings after i start using the chalk for a few days

To check on the many available tips, I bought four standard wood shafts for one butt and had four new tips mounted, each with a dime radius. The tips are Mourri medium, Sniper, Kamui and LePro. Sniper feels the hardest when hitting balls. Mourri is slightly softer. Kamui is softest. A new LePro hits great, about like a Mourri. I used the Mourri for two years and really liked it until I got a bad one. I now use the Kamui and since all four of these shafts are in the same case, I frequently screw the wrong one on and know after just a few shots that I have made a mistake. There is that much difference in feel or feedback. I have had many player friends try out these shafts to get the firsthand feedback and no two individuals have common preferences and you can see the difference in their games. One player prefers and shoots best with the LePro, another the Kamui and another the Mourri or the Sniper. In truth they are all excellent tips, but I prefer the Kamui and it does hold its shape and require less maintenance than the Mourri. Opinions being like buttholes, take it for what it is worth.

The LePro actually feels different than the layered tips. The feedback is different. I'm not knocking the LePro, but I have gotten used to the layered tips and think that I get lots mo' English with reduced effort. I was surprised that the Sniper was harder than the Moouri. I had been advised that they were about the same. That was what initiated the experiment. I also have a hard Mourri, but it is on a Cuetec for breaking so no comparisons would be valid.

Lately my moori's seem to be prone to miscueing no matter what chalk I use. That includes vintage national chalk, blue diamond, some old championship billiard and silver cup chalk!! They seem to be glazing over and need constant scuffing to not miscue. I am currently expecting some milk dud elkmaster tips from AZ member fiftyfifty and hope that they are better than the moori's.
