Nevel Hangs On For Another GSBT Event Title

Russ, I know Larry a little bit and have spoken to him many times over the years. My opinion is that I don't think Larry Nevel would enjoy reading this thread very much. All of my interactions with Larry is that he is quite a humble man, very unassuming, and doesn't like being in the limelight, so to speak.

That said, I have a great deal of respect for Larry Nevel's game. His break is fierce. He has competed in many high-profile events, aside from the regional tournament trail, in his pool-playing career. Fortunately for Larry, he's still quite young and has his whole future ahead of him. :)

Here's a cute picture I took of Larry Nevel, Rachel Abblink, and Keith McCready at the 2004 Carolinas Open. I think, subject to check, that Larry and Rachel dated briefly at one time. :p

Thanks to all of you for clearing things up.

This whole debate is based on opinions. Some people don't think that the All-Around at Derby, The Viking Nationals championship and The Great Southern Billiards titles means anything. Some people don't think consistency on regional tours means anything. Some people don't think making open challenges to ANY American player means anything. And then there are the people that know better. ;)

I don't hate Larry, I just hate his nuthangers

Here. Let me make it clear and simple for you.

Most people are not that impressed by Larry because he KILLS regional events, but has no major win as of yet. Most people look up to professionals for their mental game as much as their stroke.

Larry has the best stroke on tour, and possibly the best break, as well. He also has not come through when it counts MOST, in the finals of a major event.

Until he has ONE year as good as an Archer, Reyes, Strickland, Varner, Bustamente, etc... He's a second-tier guy, no matter how many regional events he wins.

No offense to Larry. He is a very very very good REGIONAL champion. People just don't like seeing him hyped up like he is the next Van Boening, because the guy can't even take off a major with the best break/stroke combo on tour.

That was a refreshing appraisal, I see a lot of people on here who act like he is the new Messiah and would eat Larry's turds if they thought it would please him

Yet there are a ton of people that acted the same way when John Schmidt won the US Open and when Shane was winning everything and that's ok in your opinion. Yeah, that makes a ton of sense.

First of all, I don't think anyone has gone as far as you

Second, please name any U.S. Open titles or any other Major event titles Larry holds

I'm friends with Larry, I'm probably going to go further than anyone (except maybe Larry).

Please list what you consider Major events. I think that might be a big problem around here. People might consider different things to be Major events. I'd say the Derby All-Around, Viking Nationals, and Tour Championship (Shannon's tour) would be Major titles due to the skill level of competition in those events. You might just consider UPA events to be Majors even though the majority of those are invite only so not everyone can even attempt to win them.

Larry is very fortunate to have you as a friend. Good friends are hard to come by! :)

Please give Larry my best regards! Tell him to not sweat this thread too much. You know you've become a pool champion with they start to talk about you on AzBilliards! :D

Thanks JAM. People think I get so worked up and out of line but they would do the same thing to stick up for their friends.

I love the picture of the tiger shirt by the way. I think he still has that ugly thing laying around somewhere. It goes to show that you can be a great pool player and it still won't change your bad fashion sense. lol.

Jennie,

And I sincerely do hope that Larry does get past whatever is holding him back, because he certainly does have the talent to get there in the majors.

Personally, I think a lot of us Americans are just tired of getting stomped in the majors by the foreign contingent every time. So when people talk about Larry winning everything, some of us just want to see our best players win the tournaments that represent us as a country. The U.S. Open, Turning Stone, World Championships, etc...

Maybe it's wrong to think this way, but I think a lot of Americans are looking for a hero. That's why Shane has so many fans, because he totally destroyed the best the world could throw at him for a time period there.

Larry, being a humble guy, probably is not looking to be anyone's hero. Fair enough. But in this time when we are not doing too well as a country in the game of pool, some people are going to be putting high expectations on our best.

Sorry if I offended you with anything I said about Larry, JAM.

Hi Brandon. Eddie Little is now present and accounted for in this thread. Always got to read about the guy who is running over the tours I play in. So far I've only been lucky enough to beat him once, and had a few tight races against him. I respect the guys game. He's got quite a stroke and he doesn't mind showing it. I've never really saw him play any other pros other than Shannon or Mike Davis, but I must say he is very capable of taking off any event.

How come it sometimes seems that AZers are more critical than a movie critic? Ever heard a movie critic say anything good about a movie? RARELY. Seems to happen alot on here too.

Eddie, you gonna make it to Athens, GA. this weekend for the TK tourney?

Anyone know any "Top" player he's knocked off for the cash? Not to be flamed, but I don't know of any.
in an earlier thread john shmidt told everyone that larry beat him an 8 ahead set i think for 3k. does john not qualify as a top player? anyone who has seen larry play wouldn,t make comments like short bus russ and base their opinions of a player strictly on major wins. in the old days a player tried his best to stay out of the limelight and win more cash than the major purses. i think larry is doing just fine if you check his results and be honest with yourselves and look at who is in the fields he is playing against in the southeast gabe, shannon, sparky, stevie moore, corey(when larrys in fl. or atl.) rodney, bj ussery etc... and he dominates them. if you don,t believe it just check their results and earnings. get real all you haters.

Since no one has faith in Larry winning any major tournies, I'll just take 100-1 that he wins the US Open this year.

LMAO! That is the ugliest shirt I have never seen! Never being the opportune word here!

Not to sound like a nut-hanger, but this guy can play. :)

the reason the title was chosen was because he was put to the one-loss side by Davis on the hill (9-8) and then had to double dip him in the final round - the first set was 9-7 and the second set went to double hill again. coming up with headers for several events a weekend is a bit tougher than one might imagine (writing the articles on extremely limited information from the tours is even more difficult). sometimes creative writing is much tougher than you would like it to be :p

P.S. Easy E, of course you were included, you rocked this past weekend ;o)
