New APA Scoring system

I'm not sure that there is a solution. League play has severely crippled a whole generation of younger players. A complete overhaul of the system would be needed. I can only speak for the USA.

How has it crippled them? You seem to continue to leave that out as well.

The answer is to shut down the handicapped leagues and have everyone play even, and stop pretending that the lesser player has won anything just because he has won a handicapped match.
And if you want to win a nice sized trophy to bring home to use as a door stop, then you'll just have to play better.
And no calculators at the table.
Is that supposed to be a joke, an insult, or both?

Most would agree kicking is a skill, and a very valuable one, at the pool table. A missed kick is often BIH, and against good opposition that's often the loss of at least one rack, maybe more. What can be a bigger handicap to a player than giving him a machine to calculate such an important shot?

If you're taking away handicaps, then calculators, by definition, would need to be included. They are, after all, a crutch for those that do not possess adequacy in a pool related skill.

Calculators have severely crippled a whole generation of younger players.

One change to that quote is quite illuminating. You're not always going to have a calculator, and one place is at the pool table. We send everyone to school because they deserve to be able to do simple arithmetic without such aids.

Playing even is the way to go, if your goal in pool is self-improvement and to eventually be (one of) the best players, at least in your area.

However for a lot of players, that isn't the goal. For a lot of them, the goal is to just hit balls and have fun.

That's why handicapped leagues exist, and there's nothing wrong with them.
People who don't like it can join a non-handicapped league, or gamble, or just do something else entirely.
Nobody's got a gun to their head to play handicapped leagues.
Having another OPTION is never really bad for a player, at any skill level.

I do agree that the BCA system is silly in a lot of ways. It's definitely not an advantage to 'almost' run out in 8b, except at the very lowest levels (guys who never have run more than 3 balls). It also doesn't make sense to play a single game, anything can happen in a single game. If the guy breaks, makes one of each, and then runs out, by BCA logic he played ten times better than I did, with a score of 10-1. Except I didn't even make that 1 point, he made it for me.

Those that don't like a handicap league can always drive down to the nearest pool hall and arrange a game with some money on the line. That almost always involves a spot, weight, etc.. Wait a minute, isn't that simply another form of handicapping?

Based upon his posts, it seems fair to assume Chris "The Troll" Banks would readily accept a match with SVB or anybody else for that matter, $10,000 per set with no weight. Being the self proclaimed savior of US Pool that he is, he certainly wouldn't want to accept a handicap of any type and ruin the sport.

Just thought I'd chime in, my captain is a 6(8)/7(9) and has around 75% win ratio in both for the last three sessions.

He mainly wins both by one or two racks. He doesn't sandbag, but he's just better under pressure so he pulls his wins out late in the match when he's behind.

I've known him for a long time outside of the APA and know for a fact he doesn't sandbag.

Just my .02 on the win ratios. I've been ranked the same for two sessions now and have a 60%+ win ratio in 8, 50% or so in 9.

If anyone on our team could be considered a sandbagger its probably me as I just don't try in 9 as much as I dislike the game immensely. I love 8 ball. Couldn't care much for 9.

The goal in pool should not be to have fun, it should be to mercilessly destroy your opponent. To never even give him an opportunity to shoot. To keep him in the electric chair the entire night. I don't know where this idea of fun started, or who started it, but it needs to stop.

My wife plays league and she wont play pool unless she is having fun. How old are you if i may ask?

Interesting opinion and one that could happen.

It's a stupid change and let me tell you why:

According to my LO this is done so lower ranked players who get on the hill but loose still feel like they are getting their team some points.

For anyone who doesn't know in APA 9-ball a given match between 2 players will yield 20 points between the winner and looser depending on the score. So even if you're a lower ranked player and you loose you'll get your team SOME of those points.

BUT:

For APA 8-ball there is 1 point given to the winner of a match and 0 to the loser. You can win a rack but loose the overall match and get 0 points.

This is disheartening to many and APA apparently is looking for a cure.

Here is the problem:
If I get to the hill but you still beat me then under the new score you get 2 points and I get 1. Under the old system you get and I get 0.

Either way you get a net gain of 1. So there isn't any real change. It's like saying half a dollar instead of 50 cents because the former has the word dollar in it.

The big problem is introducing a 3-0 for a skunk. I captain a team and when this stupid scoring system hits us next session you can bet I won't be going for hill/hill wins and even matchups. I'm going to maximize my shutouts as much as humanly possible.

I pity any SL2's because they're going to have a target on their back. Why put up a SL6 or SL7 against another like skill level where you'd be happy with 1 or 2 points? No. You toss them up virus a SL 2,3 or 4 and go for the skunk.

It's a terrible fix to a semi real problem. I believe it'll push the lower ranked players either out of APA or out of 8-ball and DJ to strictly 9-ball players where they have an even chance to win or contribute.

I think it is safe to say that without amateur leagues there would be fewer pool halls open.

Edit....Sorry all I did not read the entire thread before I posted a reply, that was in line with Justadubs question to Chris.

Don't take my word for it. Earl Strickland has repeatedly said that the APA is responsible for the downfall of pool. Can you disagree with the master himself?

Very illuminating.

If you can't have fun, your life must be quite miserable. To each his own. Me, if I'm not enjoying myself, I'm not gonna do it. I think there are more of me than there are of you.

You are ignoring very real situations. Look at this scenario to understand the implication, its regionals/city cup whatever its called in your area, you have played 4 matches to this point with scores of: 3:0, 2:1,1:2,1:2, that gives you 7 pionts and your oppenet 5 points in the new system. Now you have your 3 playing their 5 for the match. Your 3 only needs one rack instead of winning the match outright to help your team since 1 match gives a 1:2 score you win 8:7 overall even though the old score would have been you lost 2-3.

I see what you're saying but I'm not convinced it will work out that way.

• You only have so many 7's and so many 2's on any given team. So even if the tactic works, it's probably good for only 1 "free" skunk and you gotta work for the rest of the matches.

• By wasting your 7 on the 2, you now have limited options for their strong players. They may just respond in kind and you'll trade skunks.

• The 7-vs-2 theory has always been there, but for some reason is rarely practiced. A ton of players just play league as intended rather than looking to game the system.

Honestly, any 2 that can't fade getting hammered is going to quit anyway. Almost every 2 I know loses more than they win. They have to accept it. They'll stay if they still feel like they helped the team. Who knows, maybe they will actually contribute a point, a single win will get them on the hill.

I can't relate to those who are playing to have fun. As for me, I'm 29.

Chris You sir are the Dumbest idiot i have ever had the displeasure of reading posts from. By your twisted logic no one should play the game unless they are A players. we all start somewhere and dont always have the means to compete unless we go to an APA type of handicap league.

I guess we are just supposed to stay in the house and never try to compete and improve until we dont need a spot. honestly playing a lower skilled player keeps us on our toes and keeps higher SL in check to play smarter. IMO

I say this and I am a 7 in 8 ball (dont play 9 ball) and have lost my fair share of matches against lower SL's. but i still believe we need beginners in the game/sport for it to go anywhere.

That's right. Stay in the house until you can beat everyone in the world. That is a smart idea. And if you are a good worker, and pay attention to what you're doing, you won't have to stay in the house for too long.

So how long have you been stuck in the house now?
