I've recently picked up some new cue's and shafts and thought it might be interesting to see what you guys do, if anything, to prep a new cue, shaft or tip before 1st use. Anything?

and just to pimp the pics for a sec

Hope you enjoy your new Varney j/b Troy. I have a player and a matching j/b and they play great. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. The only thing I do is wipe them down with pledge every now and then. And then when Im done playing with them I wipe them down with a chem cloth, or a cotton towel, before putting them in my case. Just scuff the tips up and tip pic my playing shaft tip. Take care of them and they will take care of you ,,,<<<ED

On production cues I would take some 600 and lightly sand the shaft. Some shafts come with a light coating I don't like and most you can feel the tool marks. 600 takes that all out without changing the dimension. After that nothing ever touches the shaft but my fingers.

With my Dieckman the shafts came ready to play. I did nothing at all.

I recommend a light sanding of the shafts and then apply Butchers Wax. (Do a search)

I would reappy a couple times before the first use.

This should keep your shafts looking new and feeling slick as glass.

only thing i have done on new ones when i got em was a real light sanding (i used 1k grit tho) and then hit em with a peice of brown paper bag till it was so hot i could hardly hold onto it ...

i have had to do that again about every 2 months (the paper bag peice not sanding. though i do on occasion use a worn down almost smooth scotch brite pad if they have something on em) ... and they are still as slick as glass with no kind of chemicals ever touching them ...

course this was on some cheapo McDermotts .. but they were all i needed =)

Bear in mind I am from near New Orleans

First thing, you need a little cock blood! Fortunately I am talking about the blood from a rooster, a gamecock to be precise.

Wrap your sticks in the shroud from a virgin's grave being careful to get at least three full wraps around all parts of the cue, counterclockwise of course. (Assume any girl over nine in New Orleans probably isn't a virgin, infants are safest)

Now allow three drops of the blood to fall on the shroud for each shaft and butt in the bundle and rush it to the crypt of Marie Lavoue on the night of a blue moon.(these typically occur twice a year, not as rare as you might think)

Leave the cues in there for one fortnight and then bring them to Jackson Square to have them blessed at the cathedral. With the perfect balance of good and evil your pool cues will play like none you have ever held before!!

If you find the above inconvenient just play with them. If needed the Butchers wax is good but I don't do anything to a new cue until I see it needs it.

Shape the tip to YOUR preference ... chalk and go.

THEN: If you don't like any aspect of the cue, shaft, or tip .... adjust from there. I'd (personally) never sand a shaft before shooting with it a couple of times. Then .... if I don't like the factory finish ... Sand it off!

I 2nd the notion on the shafts to remove the light glaze of finish on the shaft if there is any. The smaller the grit, then better. You don't want to take it down a lot, just enough to remove the finish so that you can feel the bare wood during stroke. That's it.

Wood jointed, bee's wax on the pin. Tips look shaped already. Good to go. Cues look clean, doesn't look like they need to be waxed.
