New Hercek (Couldn't Wait)

A couple weeks ago I bought a Hercek cue from Cornerstone. It was played very lightly. I just couldn't wait 5.5 more years to get one, life is just too short.(I am still on the list, though). It is 59", 18.4 ounces, 4 ebony points in Birdseye Maple with four veneers, piloted ivory joint, ivory ferrules. It plays like a dream, sensitive but solid. I actually like the extra inch in length, as I grip the cue even closer to the balance point than before. Even though I am only 5'8", this length works for me. Even though "hit" is subjective, this cue is different than any I have ever played with including, Black Boar, Capone, Schon,Searing, Mottey, Southwest, Black, and Rick Chudy.

Long wait for a new cue

I know what you mean when it comes to waiting for a new cue to be built. If you want a Hercek or a new South West cue to name a couple it's just too much to ask someone to wait that long for a pool cue to be built. I think if you can find one for sale like you did it's best to pay a little extra if you can afford it and go ahead and get the cue so you can enjoy it. Life's too short to wait 5 to 7 years for a new cue. Those could be the best playing years of your life!
Your new cue looks nice and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Thank you sir-

Very nice indeed. I have to fight myself to not bid on the hercek that ugotda7 has on ebay right now...lol. If only I had an extra $3k!

Thanks, those are my sentiments exactly. Especially with the Southwest, Black Boar, Hercek and others you will not lose much of your investment if any, should you decide to sell it later on-

Got Bit By That Bug Too

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I went through the same thing recently. I put my name on Joel's list earlier this year, but couldn't wait. So, I bought the Hoppe-style Hercek in the attached pictures. Like you said, it hits like a dream and different than any other cue I've owned or played.

I paid a slight premium for the cue, but now I have one to hold me until 2011 when I go bankrupt with a fancy one!

Cues are a sickness, and there is NO cure. :p

While I agree with you, there is something to be said about having a cue that you commissioned by an excellent cuemaker. To have something personal to you is something that adds immeasurable value to the cue and experience.

Glad to have you chime in. I am on the list as well for my second one in 2009!

I agree with SS. Who in there right mind would wait 5 plus years in order to get a cue built only to find out that there tastes have changed or the cue doesn't hit just quite the way they had hoped it would. I say go to the Expo or some other cue/pool event and hit with a cue(s) prior to spending big bucks and many years waiting on the cue. I am happy you found the Hercek cue to your liking because it is a very nice cue. All this opinion becomes null and void if you are buying cues for collectability rather than current playability factors. In a world of "I want it now" I only order cues from makers that can supply a quality cue in a reasonable timeframe.

Agreed-

I wanted a Hercek to play pool. The hit is fantastic. I wanted the full-splice construction. There is definitely something about the construction that is different from all the others. I use that thing 4 days a week, it is my playing cue. It's great.

That looks nearly identical to one I traded away a few months ago. Mine only had three veneers (no brown) though, other than that they appear to be the same. If I didn't have two more I definitely would have kept it. They do play very sweet, just one of those things you have to feel to believe. I always thought that was a bunch of hype, but after getting my hands on a few of them I have been converted. Enjoy it.

I will, thanks. It must be nice to have had three of them. What did you trade it for?

DJKeys,

That's a very nice looking Hercek. Joel is really doing some super work these days...elegant and classic styled cues. Did you get into it right?

I don't know the answer to this, but does Hercek work out of his garage?
If so, do you think that it's all the extra humidity and moisture that's absorbed into the shaft and butt that gives it this quality of hit over the others?

New Hercek

I played with Southwest cues for many years but won't order another one and have to wait for eight or nine years. Currently play with a Skip Weston cue and have another one coming in a week or so. For those of you who have not dealt with Skip or played with his cues, I strongly advise you to get one! He's a great cuemaker and a great guy to boot. The one I'm playing with now is the best hitting steel jointed cue that I've ever played with and the construction is second to none.
