Talks going well with WPA to hopefully avoid bans.
LOL. WPA has lost this battle. After its serious miscalculation, it now faces a scenario in which it can embrace weak fields in high-purse events and become a second-rate tour, surely a step in the direction of eliminating those events, or they can say "just kidding" and lift the ban.
To Matchroom's credit, it appears they are willing to let WPA wriggle out of this with its dignity somewhat intact. The older folks among us recall Richard Nixon's declaration of having achieved "peace with honor" in the negotiations that followed the end of the Vietnam War, which was lost in the early 1970s. WPA, similarly, needs "peace with honor" as they try to pick up the pieces after a lost war.
No doubt, WPA will claim they didn't intend the ban that attempted to monopolize their position by ripping pool apart at the seams, but only a few of us will be stupid enough to believe that. Their decision to impose this ban in the first place will find a place in the "Ripley's Believe it or Not" of our sport's history.
If we are about to enter a world in which WPA will get out of the way and let Matchroom do its thing, and I suspect we are, it should put a smile on the face of everyone who really cares about pro pool and its future.
God bless us all, everyone, but especially Matchroom.
